I tried...but I have a hard time watching anything that is dubbed...I end up focusing on the mouths not matching the words, and I miss everything. I think I'll try again. I don't watch it dubbed, it ruins a show for me. Just do the subtitles.

Try again without the dubbing. You can set it where it’s the actual actors speaking Korean, with English subtitles— it is SO MUCH BETTER this way. I watched the first episode with the dubbing, and I thought no way can I watch this show. Saw this thread and changed the settings, and now I am hooked and I’m so glad I went back to it. Really a good show. I am on episode 7.

My ODS, 29, asked my on Sunday if I had watched it. Told him I knew nothing about and the answer was no. So now after reading here about it, I may have to give it a shot.

I am intrigued, but I hate gore. Is it gory? Scary? Intensely gory. Korean cinema is known for its gore. I won’t watch it when my kids are in the house because I can’t risk them walking in. I can’t fathom the person who said it’s not gory 😨 Mild spoilers: Lots of blood, removal of organs on people who are still alive, intense closeups of various organs including brains and eyeballs, point blank shooting, stabbing, glass in the body injuries, cremation, description of rape, heads with half the skull missing, intestines spilling out of bodies. Welp. No way will I be watching then!

I loved it and binged it, too. It very much reminded me of the movie Parasite - kind of a horror-slash-dark comedy that sends a message about social status/class. I started out watching with subtitles but switched to dubbing. I found I missed too much of the emotion on the actors’ faces when I was reading along. Parasite is a great movie! We just finished The Squid Game last night. It was a good show but I had bad dreams. I don’t know if I would watch a second season.

The dubbing is over the top though, we switched to subtitles because I was laughing too hard at the overacting dubbing actors. I usually just watch with subtitles but the English dubbing was on, too, when we started. I was going to turn it off but it was obviously dubbed and subtitled by different departments because the two only match up in the most general sense. We got a kick out of the differences so left it on. It would be a much more intense experience in Korean and without the overacting dubbing element. I enjoyed the first half, but it fell flat in the for the last couple episodes. I don't think I'd watch another season.

I was hoping someone was going to talk about this show! The violence is intense but it’s a great story. Highly recommend, NOT for children. The first I heard about this show was from my daughter yesterday. She described the show as an adult hunger games. She said her 3rd grade students are obsessed with it. That concerns me. Cindy

I didn't think I would enjoy it based on this thread, but I decided to give it a try and did it with the suggested Korean with English subtitles. I was hooked! Besides the danger and thrills, I was particularly impressed by the acting, especially in the later episodes once the characters were more fully developed and familiar. So many psychological and sociological questions -- I would imagine this might be studied in college classes in years to come perhaps. Almost like a modern-day Lord of the Flies.

She described the show as an adult hunger games. She said her 3rd grade students are obsessed with it. That concerns me. DH & I compared it to a Hunger Games as well, but way more adult. No way would I allow my kids to watch it - not even my almost 12 year old. They know "about" it because they know we were watching it and DH and I were discussing the slapping portion. ie: How much would you have to be paid to let someone slap you? No way they're allowed to watch it, but, DS had a kid in his kindergarten class who was watching horror movies like "It" and the others too scary for me movies.

I'm thinking that the parents aren't aware of what their kids are watching. The title of the show is a little deceiving and sounds like a kid's cartoon. And some parents don't care what their kids are doing ever. I've had students in my class who watch Chuckie and other inappropriate movies - they are always the ones whose parents are very disconnected from their kids. It is sad. Cindy

We just watched the whole thing as a family yesterday. Once we started, we couldn't stop. Yes, the dubbing is awful, turned it off in the first 10 minutes and went with subtitles.

My boyfriend hadn't heard of it, but I told him we had to watch it. I had already heard that we needed to watch it in Korean with English subtitles.
We watched the first episode tonight.

I watched this over the past week or so. I really could only deal with one episode at a time, and I had my eyes hidden for about half of the sixth episode (if you've seen the series, you know the one). I thought the acting was great and really enjoyed everything about it except for the last forty-five minutes or so; I did not like either the reveal in that episode or the way the show ended, and I also thought there were some things that the show dropped that I was looking forward to exploring. Still recommend it; it's not like Game of Thrones where the last part of the show basically ruined it for me . I'm not good with gore, but I think if you're like me, you can avoid most of it because there are obvious places where it is going to happen (which doesn't cut down on the suspense for the show).

Which -- I'm not saying parents shouldn't be monitoring what their kids are doing, but I'm guessing a lot of kids are sneaking it as opposed to setting up on Netflix to watch.

We are watching it as a family (two teenage kids) and we are all enjoying it. I also think it reminds me of an adult version of Hunger Games, but much better!

It’s been in my radar. I told DH about it and we started watching last night. We usually do two episodes at a time. We are enjoying it.
I never watched dubbed shows, only subtitled.

Are you watching? On Netflix. Literally every kid at work is watching it so in order to stay cool I decided to check it out. I'm only one episode in, intriguing. Quite violent. So far it feels like an adult Hunger Games. In Korean. There also is another show that looks similar, only Japanese, called Alice in Borderland but I heard it's not as good. I'm watching so many shows right now I'm almost overwhelmed, because I don't watch TV that often so it takes me a long time to finish a series. Haven't seen it yet. But sounds like it could be like Battle Royale which was before Hunger Games and is rated R.

I was going to watch but a friend at work, who's fluent in Korean, said they're leaving so much out in the translation, so much that would define the characters/story. So now I kinda don't want to watch. I asked if she could translate for me and she laughed at me.

A lot is conveyed by the excellent actors just acting. I think you should watch the subtlitled version, I don’t think you will think anything is missing.

I am on episode 2 and I think I am finished with it. I am not finding it exciting, suspenseful and a good story. For me it is depressing, slow moving and is hard to watch people who are so pathetic.

My husband and I watched the last three episodes last night after watching 1or 2 each night for a few days. It was much better than I had expected.
