If you have a seperate living room and family room, how often do you use your living room?
We rarely use our living room area. When guests come over, we direct them to the family room. As I mentioned in the other thread, I wish our living area had interior walls, then I would make it a den or even a craft area.

We do. We have a really comfy overstuffed chair and ottoman in there that people like to use when other people are in the family room/kitchen. And our dog sits on the (covered by a protective blanket) couch all day, staring out our front window, so he totally uses it. When I've had meetings/book clubs/company, we use the living room. It's bigger and just works better than our family room.

Why do you need walls to do that? Make your space whatever you want it to be. Our house is open concept and we turned the formal dining room into the music room.
(To answer your question, no, we’ve rarely used formal anything and have been repurposing those rooms in our houses for years. The formal living room in our first home - open floor plan - became the kids’ playroom. We live in our house. We don’t worry about making sure it displays in a certain way to others.)

Well, it does hold a lot of drop off right inside the door stuff from time to time. But mainly it is the dogs' bedroom. There are 2 big comfy chairs that we keep covered and they nap/sleep there.

Yes we do. There is enough seating for all of us (6) and the TV is in there so it gets used daily.
My in-laws have a formal living room, with fancy uncomfortable white furniture and never use it...

My boys use it when they're home as their man cave. The thing I love about my house is the open kitchen/family room. I want to be able to visit w/my guests while I'm in the kitchen. The heart of my home is the kitchen/family room.

Why do you need walls to do that? No place for bookshelves if I want to make it a den. It is not a cozy space since it is so open. The two exterior walls of the living room have windows, and the ceilings are two stories high.

Yes - most nights I sit in there and read or watch a show on my iPad.
Eta - and I have to say last night was perfect - I told Alexa to play Billie Holiday, I lit some candles, had my cozy throw and am reading a wonderful book. 👍

not really. we live in the den because that's where the tv is. i already told DH that we will have no living room at our next house. i've seen homes without one with just large open kitchen/dining/den and that's what i want.

I have used one end for my scrapbook area for a long time.
Pre-pandemic, we never used it. Now, we tend to be in there in the morning, to get the sun. DH moves to the FR in the afternoon.

Our living room is also a music room. I'll have to consider whether that makes sense now that the kids are away at college. My husband does play the piano, but not nearly as often.

I mentioned on the other thread that I use the living room/front room/whatever it is room as my craft room. It has no doors, open to the foyer/front entry on one wall and open to the dining area on the other. I wish it had doors (DH plays the TV LOUD in the family room.) The previous owner custom built cabinets with two built in desks on one entire wall. Sounds nice, but the cabinets and desks are way too narrow. I could use more space, so DH has been encouraging me to move to our finished basement. There is a double sided fireplace down there which is nice in the winter. But I’d miss being able to look out into the front yard. (Plus, I have no idea what we would use that front room for. Maybe move our home office down from its current location in an extra bedroom upstairs.)

We don't use ours daily, but I like to read in there and I tend to go in there when I'm talking on the phone to get away from the noise of the kitchen/family room. We jokingly refer to it as "the bird's bedroom" because we put his cage in there at night so he can sleep peacefully while we're watching TV in the family room.

When our kids lived at home the living room had no TV - it was in the family room downstairs so that is where we all spent out time. Now that we are empty nesters (and I'm having so much knee trouble - one TKR already and a second in the near future) we put a TV in the living room and added a second recliner. So that is where we spend all of our time now. The family room is just used when we have all of the kids or other family over.

We have a ranch house, open concept. The area upstairs is the Great Room. We use it all the time. That is our main space. Our family room is in the basement. It used to be the kid area. Now the kids are gone. We watch sports and movies down there because it has the biggest tv, plus the bar is in the basement.

We don't use it as a traditional living room. There are only two chairs in it for example and they are pulled up to small round table where we keep a chess board set up. As mentioned on the other thread, we also have a very large bar display in there for my husband's bourbon collection. I have a piece of furniture in there holding some of my china and silver collections. And lastly, that room is where the audio hookup is for the integrated speaker system. We can stream music from there to any or all of three different zones - the LR/DR, the screened-in porch where the grill setup is, or outside for the pool area. It's really more of a multi-tasking entertainment area.

Yes, we use the living room and hardly ever use the family room. It's just dh and I. We have TV's in both spaces and comfortable furniture in both spaces, but like I said in the other post, it's a tri level house, so the living room is on the same floor as the kitchen, so it's just more convenient to hang out there. We also like to be able to see out the front windows. The family room is in the basement and although it's a walkout basement, all you can see is the backyard and the fence separating our yard from the neighbors yard. It's more interesting on the main level.

We use it for our kid's playroom. The front door opens to it and sometimes people make comments about it, but when the kid was small I didn't want him playing on another floor of the house from where I was and I knew we weren't the kind of people who would sit in a "fancy" living room. It's our house -- we use the space for what we want. Now that the kid is older I do sort of want to move his space to another area of the house (probably basement), but am having a hard time getting the energy up for that project. If we do move his stuff somewhere else, I'll probably make over the space into a family library/homework/craft space type area.

We use both our living room and our family room. The living room is right inside the front door, and is connected to the dining area... we don't have it set up to be a 'formal' space. The living room has the TV, and is where we eat every night and watch television. The family room is open to the kitchen-- it has a fireplace and a comfortable chair and loveseat-- but NO television. During the winter we use the family room more often, because we will have fires, but I use the family room all year long when I want to read undistracted or work on my cross-stitching project right next to the window for more light. eta: the living room also has French doors that go out to the patio, so when it's nice outside, we can sit out on the screened patio with the doors open and still watch tv inside the room, lol. to the OP: You could put up some bookshelves back-to-back, maybe, and use them that way? if they weren't so tall they would be a safety hazard, that is... or use the large Ikea shelves, since they are 'wide' and look less prone to tipping. You could make your living room feel kind of like a 'library' with open bookcases. Something like this, maybe: Apartment Therapy Bookcase Room Dividers

We use our living room almost exclusively; we don't get nearly as much use out of our family room as I would have expected, probably mostly because the family room is on the ground (as opposed to first) floor of our house (think windows/doors on three sides of the floor and below the kitchen/dining/living room floor), but also partly because my 15-year-old's ginormous bedroom is adjacent to that room, and good lord is he ever LOUD. Love him to pieces, but it's like living with a constantly-ringing car alarm .

In 2008 my ex and I downsized and of upmost importance to me was not to have rooms we don't use. We had a larger home and the living room was used, but more often we were in the large family room with it' huge sectional, large computer area, and with an adjacent room with a pool table and other fun stuff in it. We also had a formal dining room that really only got used when we had guests as we had a good-sized, comfortable eating area in the kitchen. When we sold, we ended up in a home half that size.
I've lived in 3 places since then, and I use each room in my place at least once daily. I spend time in my living room every morning as I drink coffee and go online on my phone. I also spend time curled up on the sofa most evenings.

I think turning an unused living room into a den makes total sense!

My current house doesn't but the previous did and like the OP I always wished it had enclosed walls so we could've used the space differently. I probably would have used it as an office, but it was the first thing you saw when you walked into the house so wouldn't have worked without being enclosed. I ended up having an office in what was supposed to be the informal dining room in the kitchen. I hated that visitors could see the mess of my office, but it did let me work while still being involved with my family (the kitchen was open to the family room, my desk actually faced the TV). My current set up is my office is in an upstairs loft and it can feel isolating.

We read in there. It's a very sunny and peaceful room in the morning. We always have coffee, read the news, and chat in there before getting ready for the day. The TV is in the family room, so we usually hang out there in the evening.

My dream is to turn the open space above the living room and dining room into a loft. So much wasted space above these rooms. Who needs two-story high ceilings, beaides the spiders that I can’t reach. 😆

Who needs two-story high ceilings, beaides the spiders that I can’t reach. 😆 our last house had a 2-story volume room for the living room... it had some small windows high-up for natural light, and an opening up into the second floor hallway. The cat actually took a header off of that 2nd-floor hallway ledge once or twice, when being chased by the dogs! (she was okay, thankfully) I always wanted to use the huge expanses of wall space for hanging something really impressive, like a quilt or a Native American rug, but we moved out of the house before I could buy anything like that.

My mother had a separate living room. It was only used when I was dating. It was a beautiful room but just a showplace. The new owner of the house told me she plans to make it her dining room. I think that is a good use of the space as the kitchen's eat in area is small.
Our rectangular living area is divided into two small seating areas. The one closest to the front door and the kitchen is where guests will sit with us or where we might sit and read or talk. The adjacent area has the TV and is the area we use in the evening.

old house - living room was the main family spot - had couches, bookcases, TV - and the family room was the playroom/craftspace/kids' bookcases.
new house - living room is my craft room and family room is our living room now - no couches yet (sigh, very big sigh) but TV is in there, stereo will be going in there. Bookcases are now upstairs. Right now only DH uses the living room because he's the only one willing to be on the floor to watch TV.
