DH had surgery for a deviated septum this week and is recovering well…except that he’s been sneezing and has had a runny nose and been feeling exhausted since surgery. He doesn’t have packing - just stents inside his nose that come out tomorrow. We’re trying to figure out if he has a cold or whether this is normal. He is stubborn and refuses to ask his doctor about it, so I’m asking a higher authority - the peas.
Also, if you had this surgery, did it help with breathing and repeated sinus infections?

I can’t help with his symptoms (but I don’t recall sneezing and signs of a cold) but DH had that surgery and yes - it helped with both the sinus infections and breathing.
A word of caution, if they tell him NOT to carry anything heavy or push or pull anything, listen to them! DH didn’t and ended up having the most horrible nosebleeds afterwards.
Hope your DH feels better soon!

I had my septum repaired a year and half ago, I had stents too. Runny nose and sneezing because your body isn’t to thrilled with the stents in. You will be surprised how big those things are! Tiredness is pretty normal to seeing he had some major work done. Word of caution, it will hurt so bad bumping the nose. Nearly two years later if I rub my nose to hard I regret it. Instant pain but was well worth the surgery. Hope he feels better soon and will be amazed when those stents are out.

My dh had this surgery just last week. He had the gel packing that was removed the next day. He's had a runny nose almost continuously since then. He's getting his stents taken out this afternoon so he's hoping that helps with the runny nose.

OMG I had this surgery about 15 years ago and it made such a huge difference! After healing, the ability to breathe was unbelievable. I was in my 60's and did not know how a normal nose should work. When I had this surgery, the doctor used packing to stop the bleeding. But when I had other sinus surgery a few years later, something else was used, a type of spray in foam that was pulled out a little at a time. I also was required to use a neti pot twice a day for about two or three weeks. It made a difference in the drainage and snot. So guess I can't help in that regards.
But tell him he will love how much better he can breathe and how it cuts down on the sinus infections and sinus issues once he heals.

Thanks for these replies - it helps to know what to expect and that the surgery is worth the effort. It sounds like his after effects are what one would expect. (Amazingly to me, he had no pain afterwards and didn't even need a tylenol.)

I had this surgery 3+ years ago, and it's made a huge difference in my breathing and (most importantly) no more sinus infections! I didn't have the stents but it makes sense that his system would react to something it perceives as a "foreign object" by sneezing and being irritated. Hopefully that will clear up shortly after he gets the stents out.
As someone else said, though - make sure he treats his nose and sinus system very gently until fully healed. I found out the hard way by jumping up and down too soon (several weeks post-surgery) and was rewarded with a horrible nosebleed.
