Guess what time it is for me? Yep! Colonoscopy time! LOL
I've searched the board and google and read all about prep day and gotten some great tips on that fun part. LOL
I didn't find too much about the day after ... Mine is on Thursday. I am a small business owner and I really need to be able to work on Friday. My job is a lot of walking and moving around small items.
If you've had experience with this, what was your day after like?
Thanks in advance!
Update #1 post procedure All went well. A little groggy and HUNGRY! DH is picking up to me a grilled cheese and some soup from McAllisters. Mmmm! Hope it not too heavy but we’ll see! It’s what sounded the best.
Thanks so much for the advice! It was tough to chug down the prep drink yesterday, but the tip of drinking through a straw in the back of your mouth really helped! Wasn’t sure if I did it right because it took a while to work. But yep, I did it right! LOL
Feeling good, just a little sleepy. No gas so far and no discomfort. Praise the Lord!

Depends on if your health care provider uses air or not. Mine did not and I was fine right away after. A friend on mine had the air and was bloated rest of day & half of the next.
I remember specifically my surgeon said I don’t use air you’ll thank me for it later. And I was thankful after my friends experience.
You be able to move and walk and fo things as soon as the meds wear off though.
Good luck!

She took me home, I went to bed and slept off and on for the rest of the day eta Drowsyness following anesthesia is normal for me. Next morning I woke up early and felt just fine. I could have gone to work but it was Saturday so I did my normal Saturday housework.

You should be fine the same day. The worst I heard anyone complain of is the gas that may persist for at least 24 hours after.

With my first one, I had no issues once the procedure was done- for that one, I drank 8oz prune juice the 2 evenings prior to prep and then I had the gallon jug of prep (you really only drink about half of it)
With my second one, they had me take Dulcolax the night before prep and then in the morning, I had the gallon jug again. I will never take Dulcolax again. I had cramping from it and was nauseous. I vomited while doing the prep. I still felt lousy the next day.
So, it depends on what prep you have. I think. I had no issues with the big jug of stuff, that was the same both times. The Dulcolax was the difference and I know not to do that again

Life returns to normal very quickly IME.
I only remember the day after my first procedure because I was on a plane and had no problems. DH was back to work the day after his procedures and he is on his feet for a good part of most days.
Hope all goes well for you.

You'll likely feel fine the day after, but you might be advised not to drive for 24 hours after the procedure due to the anesthesia. After a colonoscopy I nap on and off the rest of the day, but always feel fine. The day afterwards isn't an issue. The prep is the hard part. Once that's done the rest is easy. You'll be snoozing and won't feel a thing during the procedure. Afterwards, you might feel hungry and fine, but a lot of people feel tired that day, too.

to me, the prep is worse than the procedure itself or the afterwards. the prep isn't even that bad.

When I am out under I tend to be a bit out of it for longer than others, but am fine by that evening.

I felt okay the day after, but pretty much lost the whole rest of the day of the procedure because I was sleeping off the anesthesia--I don't really even remember dh walking me out of the hospital or getting home!

I left the hospital after my colonoscopy and went straight to chipotle for lunch (daughter drove). I sleep hard after anesthesia and napped and relaxed the rest of the day. Mostly celebrating that it was over. I felt absolutely fine.

I am sure it depends, but I had no issues. I was told to take the day of the colonoscopy off but I could have easily gone to work. I did take a nap because of not really sleeping the night before.

Yeah, I have a chronic illness that requires me to get them fairly often, and I am usually completely fine by the time I get a meal into me . The day after is completely normal. I generally take the day off of work just in case, but I could work if I wanted to. ETA: I meant I take the day of the colonoscopy off. The next day I am at work!

I agree with the above. The one thing that Dh and I have both done is to do some probiotic heavy drinks and/or foods the next few days (komboucha, yogurt, etc) but that doesn't affect the day.

I'm usually sleepy when I get home. Take a long nap and have a nice meal. Next day, totally back to normal.

I try to schedule mine for early morning, and I'm usually home by 10am. I'm kinda sleepy for a few hours, but nothing a good nap won't take care of. After that, good to go!

I'll be the outlier here. I still had some residual "urgency" the next day. It wasn't bad, but I was glad I didn't have to ride the subway for an hour! I felt fine and probably could have worked if I needed to.

I probably shouldn't share my experiences as they've been rare. I've had 5 colonoscopies by now. The prep landed me in the ER each and every time. Turned out that I had GI issues and I'm on a few meds as a result. I did learn that the more you eat (thinking, "I won't be able to eat again for 2 days..."), the more you poop. Big mistake!!!
I'd weigh myself before, during and after. It's silly, but it's a very quick weightloss and it's put back on quickly.
As far as the after-effects, I'm usually pretty dizzy and weak. I NEED a driver and then I need to lie down for a good amount of time at home. I begin eating small, light foods until I'm sure that I'm feeling okay. It takes me all day to get back to eating a real meal, but again, I think I'm in the minority!
Good luck! Keep in mind that most people even return to work or their normal routine and begin eating right away!

I think it will depend on how you react to the anesthesia. I have my third one [in several years] scheduled for 2nd week of November and the paperwork I received says "You Must Have a Driver". You will feel kind of loopy and tired for a few hours, but once it wears off, you're fine. Next day - no problems.

If they do pump you full of air, take some Gas X afterward. It will really help you get rid of it quickly. Some people get shoulder pain from the air but the Gas X will help take care of that.
I was totally fine that same day even once I was finally able to eat something normal.

I agree with most of what's been said here. I've had several!
1. Eat very lightly a couple days before the prep. It makes it way more tolerable. Don't eat a lot of roughage like raw veggies. You can, but your prep takes longer. 2. Don't stress the prep. Down the drink by instructions. Have some netflix ready on your phone. Mine usually goes in 3-4 movements about 20 mins apart. I start late afternoon, so I'm done by bed and sleep. 3. The procedure itself is easy peasy. You'll get an iv, you'll be sedated enough you'll remember nothing, you'll wake up, get dressed and go home. 4. Every time after I'm STARVING, and we usually go for breakfast (no matter the time). Pancakes etc is a good first meal. 5. I take a long nap, and after that I'm fine by late day. Zero after effects the next day.
I would say don't jump right into anything super greasy as your first few meals. You might get some minor cramping and the urge to go. I'd go with a carb (like pancakes) or a small salad etc. Good luck!

A friend picked me up, and we went out for lunch straight after, and then for a walk. Everything was completely normal. Some people get shoulder pain from the air but the Gas X will help take care of that. No they won't. Shoulder tip pain comes from when they pump gas into the abdomen during [abdominal] surgery, and after surgery some of it can get left behind and it rises and gets trapped under the diaphragm and it irritates the nerve which creates referred pain which is felt in the shoulder tip. In a colonoscopy the gas is pumped into the bowel, (not the abdomen) therefore no gas in the abdomen, no shoulder tip pain. The only way gas gets into the abdomen in a colonoscopy is if they perforate the bowel - which is a serious complication.
