UGH. I've let it really build up. I still have almost all my bills (except those that are the same amount each month which I have on auto-pay) sent via snail mail. I know, I know...please don't scold me. I am terrible about keeping up on email and am concerned I'll miss paying a bill if I have it sent electronically.
I've got about 4" worth of miscellaneous papers in a basket to be shredded. I also have to clean out my files - which I usually do before taxes each year but didn't get it done this year, so add another 2" worth. Plus, I have about 4, 3" binders worth of past investment info to shred. So I think I'm closing in on the 15-20" mark. I need to put my earpods in, start a movie, and get going on it, I know!
So, hopefully some of you will help me feel better about my paper problem. Who's next?

I had built up a biiiigggg pile - I'm certain more than you are talking about. And then I started taking Adderall (by prescription, for legit reasons!) and knocked it all out in one day. Now I shred as I go and zero build up.

Donating my shredder was the best thing I ever did for myself. I keep a banker box full of papers to shred. When it's full I bring it to the UPS Store and pay to have it shredded for me. Easy. They often have coupons.

That would be my DH who has boxes worth of stuff. He shreds a bit at a time but never seems to get ahead.
I bought my own shredder, plugged in, and keep it next to my desk. I shred one receipt or paper at a time as needed - no backlog.

I have SO MUCH and it’s not even in a nice neat pile so I can’t answer the poll. My dog hates the sound of the shredder so that’s my excuse as to why it’s piled up. I’m kinda considering having a mobile shredding service come.

Our local sheriff's department has drive up shredding events and we just had one so I'm down to hardly anything. They take donations for their charity. Prior though, I had a Xerox case of paper sized box. I don't shred anything by hand. I just let it accumlate for the twice annual shred events.

Ok, for those who take (or have taken) your papers to a shredding event and/or a location that does shredding for a fee, do you not worry about your papers ending up somewhere they shouldn't? <---- I know, that sounds paranoid, but I've had this hammered into my head for years. I'd love to feel comfortable just dropping them off somewhere!

In my state of CA they are big on reduce reuse recycle ( I assume its like this everywhere but not totally sure). There are always e-waste events or shred events being held. They take your box, dump it straight into the big old trash truck and its all shreded on site.

There was just a shred event in October so I got rid of two shopping bags full of papers. I used to take it to work. DH just told me he ordered a shredder! So, there we go.

A real estate office in my neighborhood does a shredding event once a year. DH takes a box and watches the papers getting dumped in the big machine. He needs that closure

There's a limit to how much you can take, though, and the lines are long. I'd rather do it at home.

None for me. I just bring it to my work and put it in the shredding box. A company comes and empties it for us.

If you shred at home, how do you dispose of it? And how do you contain the shredded pieces? I read that waste management companies don’t like shredded paper.
We probably have about 2” to shred. We do it about twice a year. We put the shredded pieces in a paper grocery bag and put that bag in the recycle bin.

Our credit union has a secured drop bin for stuff to be shredded. I don't go in person very often so I keep forgetting. Thankfully, they have a shredding event once a year where you can drop off a lot and they dump it into those locked bins for you. We took two paper grocery bags full to the last one.
I need to make it a monthly errand.

None really for us. DH shreds the papers from the previous week every Sunday night. So at any given point, we may have 1/4 of an inch, depending on what junk mail came in that week.

When we had a compost bin, I composted them but I don't have one set up here yet. *no kerbside recycling at all - the drop-off place is clear #1 plastics, newspapers, tins, and clear or brown glass. That's it.

I have a bunch but it's because I let it build up and bring it to the next town over for their shredding service. They employee special needs adults. You can stand there and watch them shred or drop it off.

We mostly shred as we go. Maybe worse is a we each have a file box of papers decades old needing to be dealt with. There's at least one shredding event per month sponsored by one of the high school clubs or the city, so we have no excuse. It's just procrastination.
Around here they shred in front of you. If someone has taken the time to create a giant machine that simulates it to get info then more power to them!

I am really bad about keeping up with email, but I am even worse about snail mail. It usually sits on the hall table for ages, and sometimes gets thrown out or put away by mistake. Most of my bills are paid by direct debit, so I don't have to worry about remembering to pay. The rest of them I have sent to DSO's email address, because he is much better than I am when it comes to checking emails. My shredder died some years ago. I have been keeping up by burning stuff in the fire pit outside, when ever we had a fire going. But now the warmer weather is upon us, I daresay my pile will start getting bigger. Not that we get many bills by snail mail luckily.

If you shred at home, how do you dispose of it? And how do you contain the shredded pieces? I read that waste management companies don’t like shredded paper. I put a garbage bag in our shredder so it's easy to empty. That bag just goes into the regular trash. I've never heard anything about it being an issue. We are shred as you go types. Occasionally, if we have a large pile due to some purging project in one of our offices, my husband will burn it in the firepit. I think there's a touch of little-boy-playing-with-fire in a lot of grown men! I did take two bins worth to a shredder at our local trash dump when we moved last year. It was just too much to deal with on our own. We purged all our old files really thoroughly as part of the move.

I went through all my files and pulled out everything that I didn’t need to keep any longer. I spent the better part of 2 days going through files and shredding. Usually I shred stuff in Januarybas I pull stuff together to do taxes.

We can use the shred bins at work, so I take a few papers in each day.
But....I have one bankers box that I need to scan before I shred (in case I need it one day.....)

I have quite a pile because I’ve been going through all my dad’s files. DGS loves to shred so I give him a small pile when he’s here.
Shredded paper is great for your flower beds, the worms love it. I save mine in a large trash bag and spread a thin layer of it in the beds then add mulch.
