My friend just adopted 2 kittens šš!! He read that youāre supposed to have 1.5 litter boxes per cat. Theyāre small (3 months old), so one seems like enough for awhile. He has a smallish 2 bedroom one level and 3 boxes seems excessive.
How many litter boxes do you have?

When we had two cats.. we just had one big litter box. Didn't seem to be any problems. We did clean it daily though...

I had 1 for 3 well-behaved cats who all get along (that's the key!). Now that I have 4 cats, I had to add another. I don't want them all over the house so they're both in the laundry room. Both get scooped twice a day without fail.

When we had cats, we had two cats and 3 litter boxes. Two boxes were downstairs and one was upstairs. If we were to get cats again, I would have at least one litter box on each level.

I had 1 for 3 well-behaved cats who all get along (that's the key!). Same here - 3 cats, one box. But it is scooped at least 1x per day. They were all shelter cats, so they have always been used to sharing a box. We have an average, one story house. If we had 2 stories, I would probably add another box for 1 per floor.

The general rule of thumb is usually one box per cat, but that being said we rarely did that. I've usually stuck to one box for each level of the house except in instances like my current where cats aren't really allowed to spend much time upstairs. Thankfully none of our cats have been super high maintenance (currently two cats, one box). My mom's cats are all super fussy, they only have only ever had one cat at a time but each cat has been conditioned to not go in a dirty box which means they have to clean it EVERY time the cat does anything in the box which can be very time consuming.

We kind of have one box per cat here, but not purposefully.
My cat only lives in our room/the backyard so she has a box to herself. The other 3 have 3 boxes in different rooms. Two in different areas of open living spaces and one in another bedroom because we keep doors closed.

Have two cats since they were very tiny kittens (bottle fed), brother and sister pair. They share one box box that is cleaned daily. Never been a problem and they are 12 now. We do put out an extra box if we are away for the weekend.

When we had two littermates, one box, cleaned daily was fine. When we've had cats that weren't littermates, we had a box per cat. We've never had more than one box per cat and have never had problems.

I have one cat with two boxes right now. His sibling died this spring, and I don't have the heart to take one away. He poops in one and pees in the other. That's what both of them always did.

We have 2 cats, 2 litter boxes, though they only use one. I feel like if I took the one away, even though they rarely use it, they would be little assholes and pee in the spot it was.

Two cats, two boxes. They strangely enough pee in one and poop in the other.

My two girls share this litter box MODKAT. Iām a condo dweller so finding a spot for one in my laundry room was challenging enough, it is small. In fact, Iāve almost always had 2 cats rather than 1, and have never had multiple boxes. One of my cats intensely dislikes the other (the other one still tries very carefully, but after over 2 years I donāt think sheāll ever break through the other oneās barrier) so Iām actually a little surprised that theyāre ok sharing. ETA: I think part of the key for sharing is to clean it regularly. I clean it every morning while my coffee brews. If Iām in there during the rest of the day, Iāll automatically clean it again. Having a Litter Genie right next to the box for the past 10 years has made scooping so much easier!

I have 5 cats and 5 boxes. However, 90% of the action takes place in the 3 boxes that are on the ground floor. There are 2 boxes together upstairs that only 2 of the cats use at all, and they use them rarely. Still, I like having boxes on each floor of the house, especially with aging cats. We scoop very morning right away and every night before bed, and since DH is retired he is home most of the time and sometimes does a midday scoop when needed.

We have 3 cats and one box. One of the 3 cats is outside most of the day but likes to come in to poop/pee during the day. The other 2 are in all day.

six cats (4 seniors, 2 kittens) - 4 BIG, 1 little litter boxes
there is a BIG litter box in both upstairs bathrooms. Only Tabby and occasionally Mini use it. The kittens only go upstairs following me so aren't up there enough and Midnight can't manage the stairs and LF won't.
There are two more BIG litter boxes in the utility room - all of them except Tabby use them. One is primarily pee and the other primarily poop.
When we got the kittens, they were confined to our room so we added a small litterbox (it barely fits) in our bathroom and it's still there even though kittens have the run of the house now. It's not big enough for the older cats to use.

Weāve always had one box per cat, but the cats were always adopted at different times. We adopted bonded brothers this year and they share a box. That box is on the 2nd floor (cat floor). The dogs rule the ground floor. We have kept the cats out of the basement, which used to be where the litter boxes were for our previous cats. The new cats were using the hole where our water meter is for a litter box. I guess they liked the dirt more than the litter. It was so horrible. We had to poor a shitload of urine eliminator in that hole before we killed the ammonia smell.

4 cats. 3 boxes.
We could do 2 boxes without any problem, but one of our cranky, old lady cats doesnāt like to be around the other cats very much. So she uses a small Tidy Cat Breeze box that is in my daughtersā bathroom.

Until last month I had one oversized box and three cats, one of which was diabetic and urinated a TON. I would scoop it twice a day. Theyāre shelter cats used to being in a room with new cats cycling through all the time and sharing litter boxes.
Since I lost my cat with diabetes, I switched to a regular sized box and still scoop it twice a day. Itās a fraction of the chore it used to be (although Iād trade it all for my cat back).
