My 13 year old is pretty shy. He has a project on Friday for Spanish where he has to memorize and recite a short poem. The poem is a love poem. The entire class is doing the same poem, but she gave them an emotion to convey when they recite their poem. His emotion is fear. He needs to recite a love poem with the emotion of fear. He also has to bring a prop.
My shy kid is struggling with how to do this because he doesn’t want to go too far out there. Any ideas?

Without seeing the poem it is difficult to come up with anything but I’ll have a go! Fear could be conveyed by speaking in hushed tones and giving shifty glances as if fearful of being heard or someone coming into the room. Maybe the prop could be a mobile phone tightly clutched in the hand - miming trying to call someone who doesn’t answer perhaps.
Could you explain what a controlling relationship is, and have him try to convey that? Imagining loving someone but being fearful of them too? Not easy. Your poor son!

If someone else wasn't given hope as their emotion, he could shoot for that mix of hope and fear you feel when you tell someone you like them and are scared yet hopeful to hear if they like you back.

Do you happen to have an old Valentine Candy box he could hold? Maybe the fear can come from feelings of unrequited love!

I think he would like the phone as a prop. Here is the poem and translation. Rima XXI (translation) – G. A. Bécquer What is poetry? you ask as your blue eyes stare into mine. What is poetry? And you ask this of me? Poetry…is you. *** ¿Qué es poesía?, dices, mientras clavas en mi pupila tu pupila azul, ¡Qué es poesía! ¿Y tú me lo preguntas? Poesía… eres tú.

Okay, so now I’ve read it, i think these words could be being said to a lover on a FaceTime call who the person reciting the poem is having an affair with and is fearful of being caught. Said in hushed tones with furtive glances would work.

I think it depends on the context of the love poem.
Fear (does the other person love me or not) = pacing, worrying, over- thinking, staring off into space-day dreaming. A flower with petals pulled and drop on the floor....with a dramatic >> loves me, loves me not, loves me, loves me not, etc.. The prop could be a poster board, with emojies....sad, happy, worry, shrug, over-thinking, etc...
Fear (not good enough) = have a set of blocks....accidently knock it over-shrug-rebuild-accidently knock it over-shrug-rebuild-accidently knock it over, or.....toss a wadded up piece of paper into a basket-shrug- try again-shrug and miss every time, shrug The prop can be a poster board with a report card with an "C-", a stamped "mediocre"--"average", a note book paper that says "will I ever be good enough??"

What if he read the poem with big, terrified eyes? Maybe a gulp and wiping imaginary sweat from his brow during the pause in "poetry...is you"

How about carrying a flashlight and he’s saying this poem in hushed tones and constantly glancing back over his shoulder as though someone is hunting them?

I would want to hide (fear) because of the public speaking and some of these ideas, while good, seem pretty dramatic and could be embarrassing to pull off if one is shy. So maybe he can incorporate a fear prop to sort of hide while speaking? My first thought was a paper bag over the head lol or something to hide behind?

Yes the biggest problem is all the ideas of hiding and such he finds just too embarrassing to do. He will make it though!
