Has anyone went to Mexico for a surgical procedure? I'm curious how safe you felt and if you would do it again?
I'm looking into the Pompeii Surgery Center in Tijuana for the gastric sleeve. It is incredibly cheaper. I have went on Facebook groups but everyone only says the good stuff so I presume they take down any bad statements.
Update****
So I went and had the gastric sleeve done on 2/9. I made it home on Sunday in virtually no pain. So far no issues & I am super pleased with the care I have received in Mexico.

I have no doubt there are lots of success stories.
But you asked for bad stories, so here you go. I know a woman who had her sleeve done in Mexico. Went great. She lost her weight. She needed to get it adjusted, so had to go back to Mexico. She went alone, without her husband. She died on the table. This was about 12-13 years ago. It was heartbreaking, she left behind 6 kids ... such a mess. And getting her back was a nightmare.
I'm sure there are way more good than bad. The best I can recommend is making sure you're comfortable with the Doctor/facility you choose and make sure you have plans for any contingency.

Not me, but a friend of a friend went to Mexico for gastric bypass 2 years ago. We were all terrified for her because she went alone, but everything went fine. I am not sure where she went, but I will try to find out for you.

All I have heard is that doctors here will not willingly do follow up or address issues. So check that out before you consider going.

A former co-worker of mine had a gastric sleeve procedure a few years ago in Tijuana. She said at the time it was a great experience - she was treated like she was at an expensive spa. However, she ended up with a horrible Staph infection that almost killed her. She then got a persistent C. diff infection after the antibiotics used to treat the Staph infection killed off her normal intestinal flora. She was out of work for over a year. Infections can happen in US hospitals too, so be sure to check up on any healthcare facility, but my gut feeling tells me the standards of care in Mexico may not be the same as those in the US.

I would make sure that you have coverage in the event there are complications and you need to be airlifted back to the US. That can be very costly and I'm not sure most insurance policies would cover it. Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Not weight loss, but my mom had radiator cuff repair surgery in Mexico about 15 years ago. It was a positive for her.

OMG. Have you ever been to Tiajuana? It’s the worst place on earth. Dirty, filthy, street people, crime, police brutality and crime. I would not go there to go to dinner, let alone seek medical services. I get nervous getting too far south in San Diego.
So, my answer is an unequivocal NO.

My sister had dental work done there and was very happy with the care and the price (it was half it would cost in the states.) She thought the facility was safe, clean and everyone spoke perfect English.
That being said, don't watch "Botched."

Slightly different situation, but my cousin was injured in a water slide incident in Mexico (tip of the day, if the waterslide requires a helmet to ride, that's a bad sign) and had to be taken by small boat to the hospital (the water slide was an activity on a day cruise they took). At the time, her husband was impressed with the hospital and said it reminded him of a luxury hotel. They checked her over, decided that she was just badly bruised, gave her some painkillers and arranged a wheelchair for her to use until her scheduled flight back home to Canada the next day. She was very uncomfortable on the plane, so when they landed, her dh took her to the emergency room at the hospital near the airport. Turns out her pelvis was broken severely in multiple places and she needed immediate surgery and had a weeks long recovery during which she had to live on the main floor of their house because of her very limited mobility. So, while the facilities seemed great and the medical staff competent, that did not turn out to be the case ...

I wouldn't choose to do so simply because if anything went wrong initially or if I had to go back for some reason, it would be so, so far from anyone I know & love. Now, I know that right now your loved ones can't come see you if you're hospitalized even if it's 5 minutes from home; but in more normal circumstances, I could have people I love near me if I chose to receive care close to home. So if I could choose to stay close to home and family, then that's what I would opt to do.

That being said, don't watch "Botched." This was the first thing I thought of! I have definitely watched WAY too many episodes of them having to redo horrible surgeries and procedures from Mexico to ever even consider it. No thanks.

That being said, don't watch "Botched." i stopped watching Botched long ago but in one of their episodes, a woman talked about getting surgery in Mexico. the doctor's office packed her with ice instead of anesthesia or numbing agents. ICE. that episode haunts me to this day.

I wouldn’t even vacation in Mexico, let alone go there for a medical procedure. I’ve heard many horror stories.

I'm sure there are excellent doctors all over the world, but I wouldn't want to be so far from home for surgery unless it was an emergency. If you got home and had some complications, who would you follow up with? What kinds of complications are common for that sort of surgery, and how long after the surgery do they show up? I'd be doing a lot of research on that.

I don't think I could push myself to have a medical procedure in Mexico. I haven't been there in many years, but when I was younger, my ex and I used to go all the time. We went mainly for day trips but have stayed for a couple of multiple-day vacations as well. We took my younger sister with us for a weekend once. We had multiple friends with us as well and we were all staying at a campsite and sleeping in our camper vans. My DH and I woke the first morning to my sister and our friends huddled up around the fire pit. They hadn't been to bed at all.
The story they told was that they were just drinking beer and quietly chatting around the fire when the Mexican police drove up. They demanded money or they would take them to jail. My sister was terrified and wanted to wake us up. The police wouldn't allow them to approach the van we were sleeping in. They dug out all the money they had with them and gave it to the police. The police then hit up a few other campsites. They were so terrified that they didn't go to sleep all night. They were not committing any crime, but knew that didn't make any difference and that they could easily be thrown in jail there. That was the last time my sister went to Mexico. We continued to go, but that was also the last time we spent the night there.

I had the gastric sleeve 3+ years ago at my local hospital. Before, during, and after the surgery I was on a lot of blogs and FB groups to learn all I could. Many people talked about their experience in Mexico and I would say it was a 50/50 split between good and bad. But overwhelmingly what I read was the failure rate months after the surgery.
The actual surgery is just one part of a successful weight loss plan. You have to train your body and your mind on how to be successful for the rest of your life. Surgery alone is not the answer. In my opinion it’s everything else that makes it a long term success.
You don’t say whether you are going through a comprehensive weight loss program prior to the surgery, but I really hope you do. Good luck!

I've had a gastric bypass here in Canada ... weight loss surgery is a big deal ... you run the risk of problems after surgery ... I didn't have them but many do ... I had terrrible aftercare even here I would worry that you would need to visit another doctor in your own city to take care of any complications that might arise ... When another Pea said that she wouldn't travel to Mexico for vacation either I agree

A family friend had a gastric sleeve done in Mexico. She came home, ended up in ICU with a severe infection. Cost her more in the end b/c of the hospitalization here in the US.

My DN and her DH were on vacation in Mexico when he had issues after scuba diving. Let’s just say he was essentially held hostage at the public hospital when they tried to transfer to a private hospital. After bribing the head of the hospital they finally released him to the private one. Once they were there they were told they had to pay for the surgery required, in cash, before they would do the surgery. It took almost a week to get the cash together and to Mexico. They did the surgery, released him, and when he got back to the states they had to amputate his leg. Soon, I would never willingly have surgery in Mexico.

Yes it’s way cheaper but if anything goes wrong ,you’re in a foreign country where you probably don’t speak the language and without any family or friends to help you . Personally I would not do it .

If you do, I think you should go check it out first if possible? Also, I think a big concern would be follow up. Where will go if you have post op complications or issues beyond the surgery? I think if you do your research and have a plan for any post op issues, you would be good to go

ICE. that episode haunts me to this day. While they do give pain meds after surgery here in Morocco, they WAIT until you come out of anesthesia!!! Ask me how I know? I woke up from my 6 hour long difficult hysterectomy surgery to a pain I cannot even describe. It was hard for me to yell because I had been tubed during surgery. DH started yelling at the hospital staff to give me something STAT! Surgery outside of First World countries is definitely dicey! Be careful!

Would I have any surgery at all in Mexico? Nopity, nope, no. Add me to the nopity nope no list. I heard a terrible story from an acquaintance of mine several years ago who was injured while at a resort in Mexico. The resort called a taxi to take her to the hospital, which was about 20 minutes away. She needed surgery for a broken bone, and the hospital practically held her hostage and didn't want to let her leave unless she had the surgery there. She was going home in less than 12 hours and wanted to wait until she returned home. They finally let her leave and called "their" taxi service, which took HOURS to get her back to the resort because the driver took them way out of the way, and it cost them hundreds of dollars just to get back to the resort. I don't even have any desire to vacation in Mexico, much less go there for medical treatment.
