I'm not even sure how a theater can pay their box office dues on that amount of $$, especially on a new release.
Tickets here are 9.50. A large popcorn $6.00 and a bottle of water is $2.98 That's what I paid Sat Night.

My family of 4 just went to the matinee yesterday to see Mockingjay. It was $7 per adult, so $28 for all of us to get in. We got 2 large popcorns (they have *THE* best popcorn) 2 large sodas and 2 sweet teas. I think that was $25.

Movie tickets here in Calgary are $13.25 and snacks are an outrageous price ... for my family of four to go to the movies it costs more than $100 I go to the movies once a month with the meetup.com group that I run and I smuggle in my own Starbucks coffee ... no one has ever said a word ...

Admission: 2*$8.50= $17.00 2 drinks: 2*$5.00= $10.00 2 large popcorns: 2*$8.00= $16.00
$42.00 total. In reality, we would probably have a different snack and we would only get one drink to share, but it still winds up at just under $40.00. The snacks are not good at this theater, either.
I love going to the theater in my parent's hometown. They have a better snack bar with real nachos, Blue Bell ice cream, and deli type sandwiches. They are both Cinemark theaters - I think the one up here is missing the mark.

The three of us saw Mockingjay yesterday. It was $11.45 per ticket and we spent around $40 at the snack bar; oh and I brought my own can of Fresca and DH brought his own Twizzlers.

That is definitely cheap. I did a matinee for Mockingjay yesterday. Tickets were $6.75 each and I didn't evdn bother with popcorn or snacks because I am not willing to pay those prices. A small soda is $3.50 and the last time I got candy there the candy was $4.50 each. So this time we just saw the movie only. I don't need drinks and snacks for two hours.... we will be fine.

Like most of y'all, tickets here are about $10 per adult for non-matinee shows. I think the early (like 11 am) shows are around $6. Popcorn and a diet coke will add about $15. So for me alone at an evening show would be around $25.
Multiply that by however many children come with me-they are definitely considered adults now.
Movies are not at all inexpensive and these days I wait until they come out on pay-per-view. Even then, due to financial unpleasantness at my house, I have to consider if I really want to spend the $5 to rent it. LOL

To take the 3 kids (not DH) it's something like $50 including a small popcorn and drink which are $18 or so We have a one screen, historic theater downtown that is $5 a ticket and large popcorn is $6 and drinks are $2-$4. Much more reasonable but they only show old movies and independent films... We bought a deal where you could see 7 specific family movies (one per week) for $10 a person, so much cheaper than the regular theater! ETA: it's $11 per adult and $8 for a kid. So me (or DH) and three kids (the baby is too young) would be $35 which is probably why we don't see a lot of movies. For all of us to go (with no snacks) would be $54 holy moly!

I have been known to not want to go to the movies because I was not hungry enough to want the popcorn. I think they put crack in that stuff....
Those prices are dirt cheap, Steph. Nice for you.
We also have a cheap theater, but it's not the nicest. On Sunday afternoons, they have a great deal - $5 per ticket and an $8.75 popcorn combo - a huge tub with a refill and 2 refillable drinks. So for 2 people, $18.75. If I just go with the 2 kids, I give them the drinks and bring in a bottled water. They also buy $1 candies at WM. So for 3 people - $23.75.
At the more expensive theaters, it's $10 - $11 per ticket. However, if you buy a $25 gift card, you get a free medium popcorn coupon. You can use the g.c. and the popcorn coupon immediately. The theater also has cups you buy at the beginning of the year and refill for $1.50. So a lot of times, it might still only be about $25 for two people if you plan carefullly.
If you pay full price, it's about $40 for an evening movie for two people.

We almost never go to the movies anymore. There are six of us in our family and between the age differences (two teens and two kids less than 10 years old) and the cost, it's just not worth it.

We went to see Mockingjay at a matinee yesterday afternoon at our local theater. It's a theater that also serves food while you watch the movie. For the 3 of us it was:
Matinee tickets $7.50 * 3 = $22.50 Bowl of popcorn ($8.50--they only have 1 size, but it was just right for 3 people), 2 small drinks ($4) and 1 large drink ($5) = $21.50
Before moving to Charlotte, we did not go to the movies as much as we would if the cost wasn't so high. Luckily, Charlotte has a $2 theater on our side of town, which we have enjoyed tremendously!! The concessions are just as high as a regular theater, but it's less painful to pay those prices when you didn't have to pay so much to get in. And for most movies, I'm willing to wait a couple of months to catch it at the cheap theater.

dd went to the movies the other night with a friend. I ordered their tickets online at 11.50 per ticket. I have no idea how much was spent on food, but as a rule if I take them to movies I end up spending equal amounts in the ticket line and food line!

I can't believe how little some of you pay for movies. DH & I saw a matinee showing of Mockingjay yesterday. It cost $10.50 each. Later showings at that theater cost $12.50 each. We had just eaten lunch, so we didn't get any snacks or drinks.

OP, can you (if you don't mind) remind me what state you are in? Those prices are small town prices I had growing up in the 90s. Just wondering.

We do the kids tickets from Costco (admission, drink, popcorn and treat) for $10. So 2 kids, $20. DH and I get the Seats and Treats combo, which is a regular popcorn, regular drink, candy for $22. It also gives us 1000 pts on our Scene card which is how many you need for an admission. So, we constantly have 2000 pts on the card to get in, buy the combo again, and pay for the next admission. So that's $45. The rare time we don't do that, we use a Cineplex night out ticket which is two admissions (no 3D or AVX though), one popcorn and 2 drinks for $25. We end up spending an additional $20 at the concession. At least the 1000 pts gets us into any movie - 3D, AVX or VIP.
$65 for the four of us.

Was this in Blanchester? (Not a stalker, just noticed that you are from the same area as me. Lol!). There was an article this summer about how they are the cheapest theater in the country.
The whole family generally doesn't go to the movies any more. We all have different tastes and it's stupid to pay that much money for something half the family wouldn't enjoy.
I also buy movie gift cards at Costco to cut down the prices.

We usually do matinees with the kids.
4 matinee tickets $5.00 each = $20.00 1 large popcorn/drink combo for DH and I to share $11.00 2 kids combos (sm drink, popcorn, candy) $3.50 each = $7.00
Total: $38.00

It usually costs us about $100 to see a movie. Family of 5 plus snacks. My kids always want the combos with an upgrade to an Icee drink. I never see a movie without a side of pretzel bites with cheese sauce.

Our local theater (one screen, only 2 shows a day) is $4-6 per ticket. Concessions are normal prices, not theater prices... $1-3 for popcorn, drinks are $1-2, candy is $1. I can take our whole family (2 adults, 1 teen, 3 kids) and get tickets, popcorn, drinks, and a candy for everyone for under $50.
If we head to a bigger theater in Park City, tickets are $8-10 each, but the real price increase is in the concessions. We can't go there for much less than $100. I think pricing in Salt Lake City is about the same, but I don't go to movies there very often.

One area theater has $5 Wednesdays so if I have any choice at all I will go to a Wednesday movie.
Otherwise it's $14.50 and the concessions are out of control, like $4.50 for a bottle of water or something ridiculous like that.
I don't actually like movie candy all that much anyway, so I usually tuck a bag of almonds or something in my bag. There are no low-sugar or health-conscious options at the concession stand. My DH loves the movie popcorn though, so I will usually snag a handful of his but I never get a whole one of my own.
We see about two movies a year except for Wednesday $5 movie day because it's so expensive. I feel so disappointed if I didn't enjoy the movie and I spent a zillion dollars to see it.

$31.50 for tickets ($8.50 x 3 plus $6 for the youngest). Then another $30 at the concessions counter. Not too bad.

I feel blessed that three of my four kids have hung onto their movie theater jobs part-time in addition to regular jobs. They get free movies, though not on the busy weekend generally, and can take a free guest. I can't even begin to imagine how much we have saved in ticket costs over the past 7 years.
If I do venture out alone, I go to the first show of the day for a whopping $5. Normally tickets are $11 or $18 for IMAX. I would NEVER pay that amount and I am always amazed at how often those sell out. We get free IMAX too. Not only that, the free movies extend to other theaters in the chain so... if a movie we want to see isn't t their theater, we can check other locations. I strongly urge teens who like movies to get a p/t job at a theater. Oh, one last thing, I don't ever buy snacks and had my kids trained when they were little, to pass on theater snacks and they knew we would go for something better after the movie.

We saw a matinee show of Mockingjay yesterday. Four tickets was about $39.50. If we get drinks or snacks it's easily a $50-$60 experience.

Bare minimum for the 4 in my family would be about $50, but we usually just share one big popcorn and only the kids get drinks. I cannot BELIEVE the prices you posted -- those are crazy cheap!

The last movie I went it was $8.50 for a military discount ticket and nothing on the menu was under $5, even a soda. It was just under $20 for me to go alone. A family of four would easily top out over $100 for the evening.

Movie tickets here are $8.50 per.

When we go to the movies, it is usually DH, me and grown DD. With tickets, large popcorn, 3 large drinks and sometimes a candy or 2, it is about $50 or so.
