There are so many of you still around from the olden days of 2 Peas, that I wanted to share this milestone with all of you.
This Thursday, November 27th – Thanksgiving Day – will be ten years since my DS, Nick was diagnosed with leukemia. That morning, he was just your typical rowdy four year old boy and by that afternoon we were being processed into Texas Children’s Hospital for what would be a two and a half year process of beating his cancer.
During that time, the Peas were one of my only outlets for keeping touch with the outside world as Nick's immune system was often too suppressed for us to be around other people. I felt safe coming here and expressing my worries, giving updates and celebrating our victories. The Peas rallied around my family. There were people who coordinated gifts being sent to our home for Nick, and even for our daughter, Kate. (She was Katie back then.) When the Peas knew we were going to Disney World for Nick's Make-A-Wish trip in the fall of 2005, the Peas again came together and did a remarkable good deed. Lots of wonderful scrappy ladies made Disney themed scrapbook pages so all I had to do after our trip was place the photos and I had a remarkable album ready to enjoy. Not only did the Peas take care of me, but you also put together 8x8 albums for Nick and Kate and their photos.
Nick is now 14 and growing to be a remarkable young man. He is an excellent student, plays percussion in the school band, involved in football and participates with a theater program. When he is asked what it was like having cancer, he will tell you that it one of the best things that has happened to him. He says that it has made him into the person that he is today. We are blessed. He had his annual long-term survivor appointment last week. All of his labs came back great. He’s grown taller, lost some weight (he was a bit on the chunky side) and likes to inspire others that they too can overcome great obstacles.
For those of you who were around ten years ago and said a prayer, thought positive healing thoughts, sent us a card or gift – please know how very much I appreciated it then and still do now.
