So excited that a new baby will be joining our family early next year, and one whose parents actually live close enough for us to be able to visit and love on this one, hee!
Looking at the registry list, a lot has already been purchased, and I can't afford what's left on the list. Sooo....I'm trying to come up with something that maybe as new parents they haven't thought they'd need. Something useful, something sentimental, something funny, I don't know. My youngest is in high school so those days are long over for me, so I can't really come up with anything. I do know I'd love to fill a wicker basket with whatever it may be, so she can use it for storage later. That's all I got! The mother is very particular in her style and décor taste, so photo frames, or anything decorative is out. UGH, I'm usually a pretty creative gift giver, but I'm wayyy rusty in baby gifts! Hmm...maybe something for the dad, my nephew? A daddy's helper type something? I know him more than his wife, he's very active, athletic, fun natured, easy going...and they are having a boy, so....yup. nothing. I got nothing.
Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated, Peas!
Thanks, Cindy

It's not unique, but I love to give books as baby shower presents. Not the little board kind, but classics that can be read to them and they can then read themselves.

Would dad use a baby carrier? My DH used his more than I used mine, and we needed our own since he's 14 inches taller than I am!
I loved receiving large homemade flannel receiving blankets. They are so nice for swaddling and when the baby grows, are still big enough for cuddling in and going to bed with.
I also really appreciated all of the bath products, including piles of baby wash cloths. I know some people are fussy about what baby products they use, but we received a variety of Johnson & Johnson and Aveeno and they were all great. And I don't think I could have too many baby wash cloths. They are great too for toddlers and preschoolers.. we keep damp ones at the table at meal time for wiping messy hands.
Books are always great. Anything from favourite treasured story books, to chunky board books. We love alphabet books, first word books, and books with nice short, concise nursery rhymes.

One of my favorite gifts my son got at my shower was a piggy bank. Actually, it is a monkey bank. LOL
He'll have it long after the diapers are gone, clothes are outgrown, bibs are no longer necessary and toys are packed away.

To be honest, I always give not the most unique or most expensive but the gifts that actually are worth having..like a dozen cloth diapers. I just use those instead of tissue paper in my gift wrapping. Also buy the side by side tees from Carter which are so hard to find...when you are a new mom pulling those tiny scrunched up arms through the normal tees seems like you are torturing the kid..side by side are much easier to put on and for a new mom you don't feel like you are hurting your child. And lastly I buy one of those blanket sacs and dressing gowns because hello what could be easier than using those for the first few months. The only thing I will also buy is the dream turtle where it also acts as a night light and plays music.

I usually give a basket of socks in a variety of colors and sizes. I can't tell you how many times I've had new parents thank me. They never realized how many socks they would need nor how fast the baby would outgrow them.
Another idea is a date night package. Maybe dinner gift card with a certificate for free babysitting!

Board books, picture books, there are sooo many fantastic titles out there!!! Sure to be treasured and read again and again. LOVE gifting books! It's so fun making my selections too. Enjoy!

I don't know if this counts...but when I had the first boy, someone gave me a handmade onsie. I still have it. I say handmade, but it was a regular onsie with a felt design that was hand sewn and then hand sewn on to the onsie. Maybe something like that? ETA: this is kind of what I mean: hand appliqued onsie

I'll buy a wicker laundry basket and add baby dreft detergent, some hangers in it etc. add a few baby toys. Use a golden book instead of a card. If I'm running short on time, Aveeno makes a cute little gift basket with some lotion in it for the new mom.

I give a generous gift certificate for dinner out and a standing promise to babysit so that the parents can get away on their own soon after the baby is born. It goes over really well and everyone I've given it to has raved over it because they enjoyed getting a break (particularly my friends who had twins and couldn't wait to get out for a few hours).
I've also done consumables, but those are kind of boring. Dinner out is so much better in my mind.

I like what my friend got...a tool box with stuff in it like rash cream, wipes, cloth diapers, pee pee cover (that was more of a joke, but still useful I suppose) Daddy's Little Girl onesie as they had a girl, pacifiers, blah blah..
He owns a motorcycle shop so it was very cute. Maybe you can tailor something to him like that?

I love to give books also, especially the little chipboard ones that the baby can hold - a variety of books is great.
I love the idea of a basket of socks.
I got a bib that was embroidered with my son's name and I loved that. It went over his head like a tee shirt and it was longer so I could use it for feeding. So maybe something with the child's name on it that the baby can use for awhile.

One gift that I've given in the past is a baskets of safety items- cabinet locks, outlet plugs, etc. Those littles are all too active too soon and it's to have those on hand.

I love giving books. You could get a few and maybe a set of bookends. Recently, for a very close friend, I gave a wagon filled with toys; some for now some for later as the baby gets older. I recently saw someone give a growth chart; thought that was an original idea.

Books are always good. I like to give an amber teething necklace. Works for boys and girls, really cute. Not sure if it actually help with the teething pain but it cannot hurt. You could put this and and then an assortment of different baby medicines: tylanol, grip water, gas drop, baby vaporub, pedialite, things she will need one day one the middle of the night when the pharmacy is closed.

A yoga ball was great for my dgd. She loved it when we would sit on it, hold her and gently bounce. It was the best way to soothe her for several months.

Ummmmm.....My regular baby gift is a handmade crocheted blanket. I think any type of blankie/lovey type thing would do. I gave one to my clinical trial nurse for her son's birth 3 years ago and she told me this year he still snuggles with it---she said, "I have to take this huge thing with me everywhere!"

Back in the day a savings bond or starter college/savings account was thought to be unique.

I couldn't have enough large, reversible bibs and small, soft washcloths for my DS. I still use them, too, for various things now that he's not a baby anymore. Someone gave us a growth chart to hang on the wall, something like these: Growth ChartsWe hung that up in DS's room and used it. Loved it!

For our wedding we got a medium small rock (about the size of a regular piece of paper) that was engraved with our names and wedding date. I loved it so much that I asked for a similar rock for each kid with their full name, birthday, height and weight. Currently we have them outside in a flower garden but gave also has them by the front door and inside. I have no idea how much they cost.

Books are always great. Anything from favourite treasured story books, to chunky board books. We love alphabet books, first word books, and books with nice short, concise nursery rhymes. One of my dear friends gave us six or eight homemade big flannel receiving blankets, like 45" square. It was probably the BEST gift we got since they were bigger than the store bought ones and so cozy! They were great for swaddling, putting over DD's car seat in the wintertime, even used them in the car as she got older. Now that she's a "big girl" lol, she uses them still in her little dolly beds. The other really great gift we got was from my stamp group friends. They each bought a favorite kid's book and sent them all together, basically her first library! It was so cool. Some were board books for little kids, others were picture books and some were longer classic story books--a nice assortment she could grow into. One thing we didn't get but that would have been awesome would have been a collection of classic Dr. Seuss books.

A sound machine. My first DS couldn't fall asleep without the sound of the stove vent and looking back I think a sound machine would have made my life so lunch easier.
My 1st DS received a simple flannel throw made by a good friend, 12 years later it is still his most treasured possession (though as a preteen he would never admit it)

I usually make a small basket of diaper rash cream, infant tylenol, gas drops, teething gel, and a thermometer because those are things you suddenly need right now in the middle of the night. I round it out with some nail clippers, brush/comb set, and other small non toy items you find hanging in that area.
A basket of plug covers, door knob covers and other child proofing is also a good gift. That is another thing new parents suddenly realize they need without any warning.

I've given a portrait certificate with a smallish basket that holds an assortment of coordinating frames in different sizes (like all black, a 4x6, 5x7, & 8x10, for example... can get nice ones at Kohls when they're 50% off and you've got an additional %0ff from the flyer or whatnot). -The Tub as a basket-you said her registry is mostly purchased and she probably already has a tub, but you could use any other basket. I would try for bathroom-appropriate, like some sort of rubbermaid material with a handle, but any basket would be nice! A hooded towel and washcloths, if they have a little baby robe (not always practical, but so friggin cute!), baby wash and/or shampoo, baby lotion, q-tips/cotton rounds, one or two little tub toys (like stacking cups), if they have one of those floating bath temperature monitors that beeps if it's too hot or cold. A couple of the gifts that I've given that have gone over really well are ones that go more past the infant stage... because before you know it a few weeks or months have gone by and you need this stuff, so you end up having to buy it yourself -A Ready for Food Basket-baby bowls, baby utensils, to-go snack containers, sippy cups, those stick-down place mats for eating out, if you can find a Baby Safe Feeder, etc... I put them in a picnic basket If the expiration dates are generous enough, you can include some Gerber Puffs and/or Cheerios. -A Ready to Play Basket-(I always used all Baby Einstein stuff, but they're not around as much, so just mix and match)... I would include one of the basic BE videos (Baby Mozart), one or two board books (I'd try to find interactive, with mirrors or flaps or textures), a very basic "baby's first rattle" type toy, a teething toy (like one you can cool), a larger "rattle" type toy, and a full-fledged non-rattle toy. If I could find the puppets I'd include one.

Go with the books! Such a fantastic gift- it is the one thing I was actually a little disappointed I did not receive more of at my baby showers (my DD is now 10 months old). I was positively drowning in clothes, diapers, handmade blankets, toiletries, etc which were all wonderful and appreciated but I only received a few precious books. They are easy to store, there are so many unique selections available, they get used for years, and mom will think of you when she reads them to her little one.
My DD especially loves the "That's Not My..." series, which are touchy feely books and very sturdy!
