My dad has worn hearing aids for 25 yrs. He is having a lot of trouble with them now and has had to return the past 4 he has tried. He is getting so frustrated and I feel so bad and want to help. He has had a lot of health issues, and can't hear or understand the doctors, so that makes it so hard for him.
Does anyone here have hearing aids that they would recommend, or that their parents or grandparents like? My dad is 81.
Also, they are in Maryland, so if any local people have an audiologist or hearing aide person they would recommend I would appreciate the information.

DH has a pair of Phonak.
They are expensive but automatically adjust for background noise. Your father needs to have a proper evaluation done by an audiologist, not a hearing aid salesperson. He may have a hearing loss that cannot be helped by a hearing aid.

I just got hearing aids about 2 months ago. I went to an audiologist who evaluated my hearing loss in each ear. The hearing aids were programmed to help in the areas that I have problems. I was able to try different types/brands until I found the pair that worked for me. I would wear a pair for 2 weeks and then go back to the audiologist with my positives and negatives on each pair. I ended up trying 4 pairs and chose Signia behind the ear rechargeable ones.

I can recommend an audiologist in Rockville - my mom goes there (and I go to all of the appointments). If that is close enough, let me know. They aren’t inexpensive though, and likely insurance won’t pick any of it up.

He may have a hearing loss that cannot be helped by a hearing aid. I cannot agree more with this. Please see an Audiologist (CCC-A), not just a hearing aid dispenser. They know how to customize hearing aids to hearing loss. My father gets audiology care at the VA. He’s been so happy with his hearing aids, and loves that he can talk on the phone so much more easily than before. Is your dad a veteran, by chance?

I don’t know what brand my FIL has, but the audiologist told us that he needed to wear them every waking hour. That hearing takes brain function as well as actually hearing and that a person’s hearing can be lost when it isn’t used. It’s been a long process convincing FIL to wear his aids even when they bug him and slowly increasing the time that he’s wearing them.
His connect to the tv and his iphone via Bluetooth, which is really nice. He is also in the process of getting some custom molds made because they just don’t stay in place for him.

Hearing aids shouldn’t just be worn when absolutely necessary. Besides the literal tolerance issue, aids stimulate the brain and create new neural pathways. OP, your father might consider joining the Hearing Loss Association of America (formerly SHHH). You get an excellent periodical with membership, full of information about amplification, other tech and self-advocacy. And I’ll second the rec for audiological services through the VA if eligible. Good luck!

My dad visits the place he purchased his when he has trouble. Every so often they clean out the wax in his ears. My dad's hearing aids have filters to replace if needed and he knows how to clean the wax out of them as well.
Was your dad shown how to care for his? My dad is still very hard of hearing with them. It could just be his level of hearing loss is so severe or has worsened. It's always best to have someone accompany him to his appointments.

Any updates on hearing aids? We are checking now suitable options for my mom and the prices vary from couple of hundreds dollars until 7-8k. What is a huge difference between them? Is it necessary to spend a fortune or can we look at cheaper options as well. Also what kind of hearing aid supplies we need at the very beginning? Batteries, domes, what else? How many pieces of each should we keep at home just in case?

See an audiologist for a proper diagnosis on the cause of the hearing loss.
That should influence you in the decision for the aid that you purchase.
The more expensive ones filter out background noise which is a very important feature. DH has aides that recognize road noise and adjust for that. The background noise filter is a welcome thing when you are in a large crowd.

The ones that cost a few hundred are amplifiers and amplify all sounds, not just the ones that need a boost.

There are lots of ads in magazines for 99 dollar hearing aides. I do wonder if that would be better than nothing. Anyone tried those??
I think I have processing problems because I went and had testing from an audiologist and I am very impaired at just one frequency but they basically said it's not bad enough for hearing aides. Sometimes I wonder if it is more how my brain processes because I find myself puzzling out what the person said for a few seconds. Anyway I'm adapting to it.
