DGS had an ultrasound of his kidneys today to follow up on a prenatal ultrasound that showed an enlarged kidney (he is about 1 week old). The pediatirician called DD and said that he has a grade 4 hydronephrosis in one kidney and a grade 1 in the other.
He has an appointment with the ped tomorrow, and the pediatric urologist (who is in town only once a month) is supposed to call DD tonight or tomorrow morning. That's all the information we have so far, and are very worried.
Does anyone have any experience with this kind of problem? DD (and the rest of us) are wondering what to expect as far as treatment, etc.
Any information would be appreciated. TIA.

Prayers for the little one. Don't know anything about this but hope and pray that he is in good hands, and will be ok.

Our son has hydronephrosis and hydrouretur on one side. I do not recall the grade they gave him. They detected it a few weeks before he was born. It can often resolve itself shortly after birth, which is quite common in boys. In our case, our sons kidney is just really slow to drain. There are no abnormalities, and no blockages that would impede the flow of urine. So, for now we are simply keeping an eye on it. Every 6 months we go and get a follow up ultrasound on his kidney. He will be 2 in February.
Shortly after he was born, we took him to our pediatric urologist. He ordered 3 tests: VCUG, ultrasound, and a MAG3. We have only had to run the VCUG and MAG3 one time so far. Both involve catheterization, and basically waiting for him to pee so they could watch it on the screens. He was perfectly fine throughout the exams, and actually went to sleep. Just so you know, our urologist did ask and strongly recommend that we have our son circumcised. This was a non-issue for us, as it was already done.
Good luck! It can be scary, but hopefully there is nothing too serious going on in there.

My son had this. At nine months he had a surgery where the urologist repaired the ureter (sp) and reinserted. He was on antibiotics for a full year after surgery. At 15, he had it in the other kidney, kinda like lightning striking twice. He has had no re-occurrence or trouble of any kind. He is 28 now and I am sure the treatment is much less invasive now. It was a terrible worry at the time and he was so very sick in the months leading up to his first surgery. Funny, recently I asked him if he ever had any troubles or pain or anything related to that and he has not. Try not to worry too much. He will be fine.
