I love dishes. I have my wedding china, but also several sets of seasonal dishes and vintage plates.
If you like dishware, when you collect a pattern, how many place settings/dinner plates/etc. do you aim to collect?

The last time I bought any dishes (actually I asked DH for them for Christmas last year) I just got what we needed, 2 of us so 2 plates and 2 bowls. I don't have the storage space for a full set, but I wanted some really pretty Christmas dishes.

Um. Now that I have inherited some of Mom's china, I can now feed between 120 to 150 people.
I am scared to count up the actual number because DH's head might explode, LOL.

My Fiestaware set is for 12 ... I rarely serve 12! My Wedgewood wedding china is a set of four ... never use it but it's beautiful ... now it will be stored because I'm downsizing I think a set of four is the minimum ... so that you can have guests!

My sets have always been for 8 in the past, but the last couple of sets I've increased that to 10. I've had one set for 30+ years and it's no longer sold in stores. Finding replacements bowls has been a nightmare - and very costly as it is a popular design. So with 10 you have a little breakage coverage.

I use Fiestaware. I have a 4 place settings for Halloween, 6 for Christmas, and for our every day plates (colors), I have 16 now I believe. Or is it 17? Anyways, I keep 10 in the cabinet and rotate some colors in and out.

Our everyday china is service for 10 and our wedding china is service for 12. They can mix and match, so we can serve 22.

When we married, I registered at Replacement for some additional plates to an old set that I'd bought myself when I graduated college. I have 12 plates. I regret this. I've only used them once.
Now I do no more than 6 plates. I'd rather do mix and match if I were to have a large group and have more of a variety for myself.

My every day plates - I have 20. I don’t have fine China, though my parents have multiple sets which I could have if I wanted.
I have “other” sets of plates and they are in sets of 8.

I have 24 plates in my everyday Churchill ‘Blue Willow.” I have anywhere from 8 to 12 in other sets. Right now I have six different sets of dishes in my cupboards plus Christmas china in a sideboard. I also have about six dozen pebbled glass plates that I use for large cocktail parties. We’ll use those next Friday night for my husband’s office Christmas party.
I’m a sucker for interesting china. I love to set a beautiful table with all the bells and whistles - sterling, crystal, and more. You want knife rests and individual salt cellars? I’m your girl.

my everyday dishes are Pfaltzgraf Filagree - I think I started out with a set of 4 but we added on to make it 6 or 8 (open stock). Some have broken and DS keeps an eye out at thrift stores and picks up any he sees. I'm not sure exactly how many I have right - I think 10 dinner plates, 7 or 8 lunch plates and 11 or so cereal bowls.
My set I inherited from my great aunt is service for 12 I believe. That was my holiday/special occasion set for years. But I recently inherited my mother's wedding china which is a bit more my style - I think it's either 8 or 12 place settings.
And I'm slowly acquiring Pfaltzgraf Winterberry via DS who loves the hunt in the thrift stores - I only have a couple of plates, he's found more accessory and serving pieces - but it coordinates with our everyday dishes so....
I feed 4 people everyday, 5 when DS is visiting. We have more dishes than we need but I have enough to fit the two tables - kitchen and dining so up to 12 people - for a sitdown meal. Anymore than that, and we would do a buffet and probably use disposable dishes.

I have 14 in my bone china and 12 in my everyday from when I got married, but I don’t use either of them anymore. (hmmm, I think I palmed off the everyday on my DD.)
I don’t usually entertain big groups anymore. If I buy place settings now, it’s only four, and I don’t mind mixing and matching sets as long as they don’t clash horribly.
Actually, I do get out my good china if I host Thanksgiving (no more than 8 people), I just remembered.

I have:
A twelve place setting of stoneware from when we got married 41 years ago that’s gorgeous A twelve place setting set from my MIL that’s pretty but not quite my style that she inherited that’s an Occupied Japan design that I will probably pass on to a daughter And, a Sixteen place plus setting with every imaginable extra of Johann Haviland Twilight Rose that I absolutely fell in love with and recently bought at an estate auction
Everyday, I have enough settings for at least 14-16, and it’s an eclectic mix of designs and patterns that I have fallen in love with and picked up from thrift stores over 40 years. You come to my house and you will not find a matched piece of dish ware or utensils unless we sitting down to a formal meal! But it’s fun!

My mother insisted upon 12 place settings and when I got married she was adamant that I would need it. She entertained and set a lovely and elegant table. One Christmas I hosted. Other than that I haven't ever used my wedding china. Now I have 2 sets of my mother's china, as well as my own. I never entertain, though I love doing so. My china is taking up space.

I love dishes too! I usually do 12. I have 4 kids so when/if they get married I'll need 10 settings for all the adults. My DH and I both come from big families and we like to entertain so I can usually find a way to use all 12.

I don't have any "good china" (the concept is so weird to me! ). When I buy a new dinner setting I get 8 of each. There are four of in the family, so we can each use two before having to wash. Also, I have an 8 seater table, so if I happen to have that many people over, I have matching dinnerware for everyone. If it came in a set of six, I would buy two sets.

I just bought my first Fiesta. I purchased eight place settings and DH said, don't you want more than that? I was shocked that he suggested we do 12. But since it's Cobalt, which is being discontinued this year, I went for four more place settings. If we break any (which I'm sure we will since DH is hard on dishes), we'll just mix/match with other colors.

12 in everyday, 8 in china. As my kids grow and leave, I imagine I'll entertain more (we used to have people for dinner quite often before we had kids). Right now, I only get the china out for a girlfriends' lunch a couple of times a year. I only have 6 sets of crystal, and I may have only 4 sets of MIL's sterling - I really need to get on Replacements and fill that out a bit!

We entertain a lot and only use paper plates one week a year (4th of July). I have 24 place settings of Fiestaware.

Depends on how many people I need to feed. I host Thanksgiving every year, so I have at least plates and dessert plates for 25.
It's an old Avon pattern called Cape Cod, and can easily be found on Ebay or any antique store.
Everyday Fiesta ware usually shoot for 10 settings.
I also collect Fostoria American pattern. Probably have settings for 20.
I have pretty much reached the end of my collecting, and only buy if something gets broken.
I realize this is way above the norm, but we do host a lot, and dishes are used! No sitting on a shelf
just for pretty. Oh, I forgot about my Mothers china. I have two huge sets stored for daughter in laws, Noritake Cabins in the woods
and amber depression glass set called Dancing Lady? I'd have to check. They are at least 12 plates in each set, Mom
collected for years. They used to be worth SO much $$$, it makes me sick to see what it's being sold for now.
China and glassware in general are nearly financially worthless-- no one uses them anymore. I'm old school!!

China and glassware in general are nearly financially worthless-- no one uses them anymore. I'm old school!! Me too!! My grandmother and mother loved dishes. For my first apartment, my mom set me up with eight setting of Corelle "Blue Morning" for everyday and eight settings of "good dishes." In the mid-2000s, I collected the gem colors of Fiestaware. Since silverware isn't appreciated anymore, I have four sets--my mother's silverplate "Queen Bess" and her 25th-anniversary set and my "Plantation" set for "good" and "Michelangelo" for everyday. I have passed a few of her sets of dishes on to university students and immigrants, but the set that she entertained with, I couldn't part with.

We have a large extended family, as well as entertain extensively. If I buy a set of dishes, I buy for 16. All in all, I can set a full service table for close to 100, if necessary. It was necessary at least a dozen times last year, what with wedding gatherings and two donor dinners we hosted.
