This has become a major pet peeve of mine.
Seriously, why do so many people, usually women, feel that is perfectly acceptable to walk around talking on their phone with the SPEAKER on?
Stores, doctor's offices, and the latest, this afternoon IN CHURCH!
My Dad and I decided to go to Mass this afternoon because it is supposed to be bad weather tomorrow. We are sitting in church waiting on Mass to begin; there are maybe 40 people spread out among all of the pews.
All of a sudden we hear a muffled phone ringing. The lady didn't get to it in time and so called whoever back and started having a conversation on speaker!
Everyone in the front half of the church heard her.
Then she had the nerve to CALL THEM BACK a second time! So we all got to hear her asking "Does she want to go to Mass? Well go get her and come on!"
Of course I looked at my watch. It was 3:59.Mass starts at 4. Eyeroll.
So then the lady next to her (who I believe is a friend of hers) is telling her to be quiet and phone lady is saying loudly "Will you SHUT UP!"
Several of us who heard this back and forth exchanged are you freaking kidding me looks.
I am so sick of this rudeness. I don't want to hear the nasty details about your latest round of medical tests, what you had for lunch, or who you are having sex with and what you do when having said sex.
Why do so many people go through their day acting like they are the only person in their bubble universe?
If course, in this day you don't dare say anything to a stranger because you don't know how they will react.
OK, stepping down off my soapbox. Back to your regularly scheduled Saturday night peaing.

I totally get your frustration.
That behavior is something I witness daily, but a few months ago there was this guy riding the bus, talking on speakerphone with a woman that he wanted to meet IRL from Tinder.
She's asking him, "So, whatcha into?"
And he says, while sitting next to other passengers, not a molecule of space between any of us, "The kinkier the better. I'll suck your ___, lick your ____, rim you...."
And on and on.
It was unbearably uncomfortable.

And only middle-aged people do this because kids don't have phone conversations anymore and old people don't like talking on cell phones if they can help it. 🤣
I wanted to punch the realtor behind me in line at Target because she was SO LOUD and she kept using the same business-speak lines in her loud, loud conversation about what they were doing to do about a co-worker. I forget what the most-often used one was but it was about refusing to "sift through the weeds" for Lisa, she's going to have to figure it out herself. She's going to have to SIFT THROUGH THE WEEDS HERSELF. Karen is NOT sifting through the weeds to get to the root of the problem.
I hope Lisa made it out of the weeds.
But I'm getting too old to get nasty in public, I'll get my ass kicked one of these days. She got a stare but she was unfazed. She continued all through the line, into the parking lot, and into her car which was naturally right across from mine. 🙄

Commuting by mass transit had some very entertaining moments. People clapping when a cellphone user lost her connection (“Hello, can you hear me? Hello), to the time people were sad they were at their stop because they wanted to hear how the story ended. 🤣 But, yes, very annoying.

That is so rude to do that in church! I use speaker phone when I am at home so I can get things done while on hold. But I never do that it public. I don't even want members of my family hearing my phone conversation (I go into another room to talk on the phone).

Some people don't have a filter. For goodness sake, turn off your phone when you're being assisted by a cashier or in a room w/other people. It's rude and obnoxious to ignore someone who is helping you or to be so loud when people are trying to wait quietly.
I got to hear a married couple breaking up a couple weeks ago while waiting at a doctor's office. He is quite ill due to alcoholism and she is fed up. She dumped him over speakerphone and he was begging her to take him back. I heard every word of their conversation, because he had his speakerphone on stun. I can tell you their entire life story; though, I really didn't want to hear it.

Yesterday I was at a craft show. A woman was walking around in this crowded exhibition hall talking on speaker while wandering the booths. It is loud and annoying af. Why? Why can’t she just put her phone to her ear like normal humans? Am I missing something here?
The WFH couple on one side of me do it all the time in the warmer months when out on their terrace. Our terraces touch, so we’re pretty much right on top of one another. I can hear them when I’m inside and will turn on music to drown them out. And their work zooms too, he’s an attorney and she’s a big muckety-muck at a major clothing retailer. I hear all sorts of things. The joys of condo living.
Rant over * clearly I have a new big pet peeve 🤪 sorry!

Well I’m with all of you! It is so darn rude! I live in a nice, quiet, walkable neighborhood. I walk my dogs every day, and I try really hard to use it as a mindfulness time, just listening to the leaves rustle and the wind blow. Before covid, it was usually just me and a couple of other dog walkers. Now it’s all the WFH people walking along using earphones to yell a one sided work conversation. At the TOP OF THEIR LUNGS. I get that they want to get up and move around, but tor fricks sake, must you yell?
But the worst is this lady who walks around listening to some kind of political talk radio/ podcast thing at full blast. FULL BLAST!! You can hear her two blocks away. She’s clearly trying to antagonize people from the opposite side of the political fence, or spark a conversation with someone, but gosh darn it, it is so rude and annoying. I’ve been going back and forth with myself about walking up to her and handing her a pair of headphones.
And whoever said it’s middle aged people is dead on. I’m over 65 and I despise using my cell phone for calls. But I hate talking on the phone anyway.

People here in Japan are very mindful not to inconvenience anyone else’s enjoyment of the environment (although they do get loud in the bars!)
Earlier this week I was on the bus with three friends. We got told off for chatting by an old guy with earbuds in!!
But I do valid you, Americans are generally loud anyway, but the speaker phone in a store is another level of obnoxious.

This is one of my pet peeves.
Speaker phone, videos, video games..........PUT EARPHONES ON!
Multiple phones(or ipad/tablet) noises all at the same time, plus the overhead music......its put me in sensory overload.
People use their phone to occupy their kids while out in public, at a restaurant, in a waiting room.....it's so rude and inconsiderate.
Entitled people, are so rude!

My sister would occasionally do this to me while she was out shopping. It annoyed me so I started saying “don’t forget to pick up Monistat for your lady garden problem.” She no longer puts me on speaker. 😂

I do not understand this behavior and it makes me nuts! Even worse - the ones who take that conversation right into the public bathroom. It's disgusting and gross and incredibly rude to do it yourself but made worse because you are doing it with others who most likely don't think it's totally ok to chat while taking care of business. Somedays, I miss the time when we didn't have cell phones and didn't have to constantly be available and in touch and when private conversations were just that - PRIVATE! Have some damn dignite and discretion people!

I will be honest — speakerphone is worse, but I am not a big fan of people talking on their phones more than briefly in crowded public spaces, period. If you know you’re going to need to take a longer call, step out of the crowd!

There was a lady on speaker phone in the bathroom the other day. I immediately pretended like I had a toddler in the stall with me, talking in a sign song voice, encouraging imaginary kid to do his business, loudly promising a cookie if he would just poo, and finally singing a completion song. The whole time she is going on to the person she is talking to, on speakerphone, about the insane lady singing to her kid to make him poo. She was absolutely stunned when she came out and I was standing there with no kid. She told her friend I was some kind of weirdo, so I just loudly stated that I didn't find bathroom conversation troubling in a bathroom, but talking to your friend, on speaker, in a public bathroom is decidedly yucky and weird. Her friend agreed with me!
I'm rapidly becoming very over entitled people. I just want to say, Yoo hoo, your overblown is showing! Let me help you with that. And shut them down.

Seriously only figured this out recently. While there are some who are just rude, there are others like my MIL who are clueless. She can only hear people on the cell phone when she puts it on speaker and holds it to her ear. It's SO DARN LOUD! She also keeps her TV so loud that it is painful. We bought her OTC hearing aids from Amazon but she only wore them for 2 days. I could go on and on but she is definitely one of those that uses her cell phone on speaker ALL.THE.TIME!

I’ve the last couple of years this has gotten so much worse around me too. I keep my phone on silent at work 100% of my day. Only a text sound from either of my kids or DBF will make a sound. And then its still on the quietest setting.
Recently at some weekend scrapbook retreats I thought I would go crazy! When I’d get a call, I’d step out of the room every time. But most people are either talking loud, on speaker phone, or face time. I hate that! I finally told the gal behind me to at least point her speaker away from me, because I didn’t want to hear her, let alone whoever she was talking to on the phone. This was after about 10 minutes of speakerphone.
Even DBF does it in the house and I tell him to turn it down. He’ll watch some you tube video or play his game on loud volume while I’m watching something else on the actual tv (and I’m in the room first). I’ve told him enough, that he is finally picking up on it and turning it down before I ask.
I guess I’m getting old because my patience is not as good as it used to be!
