It’s not that I can’t pronounce them; it’s just that a few of them I never even heard of. (And don’t get me started on the various explanations of what bitcoin and EFTs actually are.) Do you know most of these words?
— Cheugy (CHOO-gee): A trendy term popularized by Gen Z and used to mock an outdated and unfashionable aesthetic typically associated with millennials, such as “Live, Laugh, Love” signs.
— Chipotle (chih-POHT-lay): The American fast food chain became the center of a viral trend this year challenging Baby Boomers to pronounce the name.
— Dalgona (tal-goh-NAH): A Korean treat made with melted sugar and baking soda, popularized in Netflix’s “Squid Game.” (Touma notes that some speakers seem to produce a ”K” instead of the ”G” in the middle syllable.)
— Dogecoin (DOHJ-coin): A divisive cryptocurrency that began somewhat ironically before being popularized by Elon Musk, causing its value to dramatically increase.
— Eilish (EYE-lish): The singer Billie Eilish, whose album “Happier Than Ever” was released this year to critical acclaim and nominated for the Grammy Awards’ Album of the Year.
— Ethereum (ih-THEE-ree-um): Another cryptocurrency that skyrocketed in value this year amid the decentralized-currency boom.
— Ever Given (EV-er GIV-en): The name of the ship that blocked the Suez Canal in March, costing billions of dollars in lost trade. Many newscasters mistook the name of the ship as “Evergreen,” the name of the company that owns the vessel, which was printed on its hull.
— Glasgow (GLAHZ-go): The host city of November’s United Nations Climate Conference was mispronounced by both President Joe Biden and former president Barack Obama.
— Kelce (KELs): The Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce revealed on radio this year that his teammates and the media had been mispronouncing his name for years.
— Omicron (AH-muh-kraan / OH-mee-kraan): A new variant of COVID-19 first identified in November, named in keeping with the World Health Organization’s system of identifying variants with Greek letters. (Touma notes it’s pronounced differently in the U.S. and the U.K.)
— Shein (SHEE-in): The Chinese fast fashion company at the center of the “Shein haul” trend, in which participants record themselves trying on numerous different outfits from the company.
— Stefanos Tsitsipas (STEH-fuh-nohs TSEE-tsee-pas): Currently ranked as the world’s No. 4 tennis player, the Greek athlete rose to international prominence when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final of the French Open in June.
— Yassify (YEAH-sih-fai): A popular trend in which multiple beauty filters are applied to well-known pictures or portraits for comic effect.

I've only heard of chipotle, Ever Given, Glasgow, and omicron. And I can pronounce them. I've never heard of any of the rest of them, except I could pronounce "ethereum" just based on how it looks. I googled "ethereum" and got this: "...a decentralized, open-source blockchain with smart contract functionality. Ether is the native cryptocurrency of the platform." hahahahahahahaha That doesn't help me at all. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/OrTI4SBmZ2ZYSFv6ag4f.jpg)

I have heard of, and can pronounce all of them, except for the two sports related things. I can pronounce them, but I don't know what they are.. I don't know any of the sports things, so I am not surprised.

The funny thing about that is, his brother who is a TE with the KC Chiefs still gets called Kel-ce and made a joke about it being Kelc but doesn't correct.

Wait, there was a challenge this year to get people to pronounce “Chipotle” correctly?! I never even knew that. Sometimes my family and friends and I will mispronounce it when joking around.

How on earth does anyone get AH-muh-kraan from Omicron? and Glasgow as Glascaw It seems that there is a very big difference in the British sounding of vowels and in particular the O to the way many Americans do. I don't know the meaning of some of them but I could pronounce them, except maybe Chipotle if I didn't know that it doesn't end the same way as you pronounce bottle.

My son owns some of that, and when I ask him to explain exactly what it is, his words sound something like the description you posted! There are only so many ways I can ask him to explain it before I start feeling like the most confused student in the class...

I've heard of nine of them and I do know how to pronounce those nine.
The ones I didn't know were Cheugy, Dalgona, Kelce, & Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The ones I didn't know were Shein, Dalgona, and Kelce. I love to mispronounce Dogecoin, because it originally came from Dog E-coin, so I call it doggycoin. Makes my kids annoyed.
I'm pretty good with Greek letters and names. Having studied engineering helped -- a bunch of my college professors were Greek and we used Greek letters in equations all the time.

Omicron - Hmmmm, the way the pronunciation is written is very American. It wouldn't be AH or kraan in Aus, NZ, UK etc. We pronounce our O with a very short sound as in hot or lot. But that doesn't translate well to American pronunciation, because y'all pronounce hot with a more drawn out haht or hawt. We would pronounce it OM-i-cron. Shein - that surprised me, I have always prnounced it "shine"

The list is at a bunch of sites and I’m not positive which one I excerpted from (college professors would have a smack down for that) but here is a link to one of many: Most Mispronounced Words of 2021
I noticed the word Ethereum is supposed to be pronounced with a short I; however, everyone I know says “eh” not “ih.” I know Americans pronounce our vowels differently from our British and Australian friends, so that probably makes this list subject to opinion, depending on perspective.

I wouldn't pronounce it with a short I either. I would pronounce it Eee- thur -eee- um. with the emphasis on the thur, the u as the u in uncle.
