What are your favourite podcasts.
I’ve inherited older dd’s AirPods and would like to listen to podcasts while I walk the dog.
Would love a series you love. I’m not interested in anything political. Some of my friends rave about true crime - I haven’t listened to anything. So far I downloaded the shrink next door.

None of these are true crime or series, but they are my favorites. If you google the titles you can check them out:
-10 Things To Tell You with Laura Tremaine (connection and other topics, she is the author of Share Your Stuff, I'll Go First) -What Should I Read Next with Anne Bogel (great book recommendations- interview style) -The Popcast with Knox McCoy and Jamie B. Golden (educating you on things that entertain, but do not matter/pop culture) -That Sounds Fun with Annie F. Downs (Christian podcaster who is an author and speaker-interview style) -The Bestie Breakdown (2 young moms in Texas. They cover all topics, kids, travel, marriage, etc)

I am really enjoying Something Went Wrong. Stories of relationships where discoveries are made, people aren’t who they appear to be, etc. Season three is absolutely crazy! The first few seasons each follow a single relationship, then there’s a few seasons were each episode is a different story.
These aren’t what I think of as “True Crime” although there are criminal acts:
Dear John
Dr Death
S Town
For Fun Smartless -Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes
Why Won’t You Date Me - rude, crude, full of sex. Host is Nicole Byer who is showing up all over lately.
My Dad Wrote a Porno. Host and 2 friends read and comment on the book. Hilarious!

I mainly listen to comedy and true crime. ..also this may be really long and I apologize in advanced lol
Some more generalized information shows I like --
You're Wrong About.. follows a different person or event from the past that maybe the public was misinformed about or should be seen in a new light. My fav was the multipart episodes about Princess Diana.
Scam Goddess dives into different fraudsters and scam artists. The host is an improv artists/comedian so most of her guests are also comedians. My favorite episodes are the ones covering Caroline Calloway and Shaun King.
In terms of TC -
Casefile is always top notch. Single host, always gets to the point, no joking around/spending 30 minutes on personal life stuff. Episodic and not too often goes into multipart episodes. Some favorites of mine are episode 76 - silk road, and episode 138 - Batavia.
The Prosecuters are two lawyers interested in True Crime. They give a breakdown of a case and then go back in and look at the legal side of the trial/how police handled things. They try not to push their opinion and stick with facts but it does slip through sometimes. They choose quite a few old cases but will also do things as they're unfolding, ex - murder of George Floyd trial. Their multipart series on the Delphi Murders and the disappearance of Maura Murray are IMO some of the best.
Court Junkie - single host, straight facts, well researched, be prepared to hear courtroom audio which may bother some people.
True Crime Bullshit mainly covers a single serial killer, Israel Keyes. Seasons 1 and 3-5 are all surrounding him. A lot of audio from his interviews and interrogations. The first season follows the facts of his life from early childhood until being caught. The later seasons go into specifics and look into other missing persons that could possibly be attributed to him -- and in the past year has helped a John Doe get his name back.
Some long-form favorites --
Missing & Murdered: Finding Cleo is an investigative podcast searching for an Indigenous woman from Canada who was taken from her mother in the 70's and adopted out to a family in the States. As the story unfolds you find out what happened to her, her siblings, and get into Residential Schools and what was happening in the country at the time. It's a CBC production which generally don't disappoint and this is no exception. It's heartbreaking. I cried. A lot.
Your Own Backyard follows an investigation into what happened to Kristin Smart in 1996. Extremely well done and lead to a resurgence where arrests were finally made last year.
Other good long-form shows to look into: Dr. Death, Cold, In the Dark, The Thing About Pam, To Live and Die in LA, Anything Keith Morrison (from Dateline) hosts is good.
A lot of what works for you comes down to trying shows out. There are countless ones I've attempted to listen to but the hosts talk too much, they don't get into the case quickly enough, or I don't like their voice, etc.
For some levity.. lol, comedy things I listen to are mainly improv but here's a few.. and they're not always PG13 if that's important.
The Neighborhood Listen follows two neighbors in the fictional town of Dignity Falls as they read real posts from "the neighborhood app" (aka Nextdoor) and meet a new person from the neighboorhood each episode.
Off-Book is an improvised musical. Each episode the two hosts talk to their guests and riff off stories that are told into multiple songs throughout the episode.
Runner-ups because they're much longer time commitments as they're story based -- Hello from the Magic Tavern, and Season 1 of The Adventure Zone.

I really, really love Beautiful/Anonymous. Chris Gethard (a comedian) hosts, he speaks to a stranger for an hour about whatever the caller wants to talk about. The only rule is that Chris cannot be the first person to hang up. Some episodes are funny, some are sad, some are thoughtful, some will teach you so much, and some are all of those things and more. Some episodes do touch on politics but you can tell which ones those will be by reading the title and/or synopsis of the episode.
some others I like:
Bowery Boys - NYC history Fake Doctors, Real Friends - a Scrubs rewatch podcast hosted by Zach Braff and Donald Faison. They discuss each episode of the show, one by one, and tell stories about filming them. My Brother, My Brother, and Me - an "advice show" hosted by the McElroy brothers. It's hilarious, and I would not follow any of their "advice." They go on ridiculous tangents and make each other laugh a lot. SmartLess - mentioned above, it's hosted by Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes. One of the hosts will bring in a guest who is a mystery to the other two until they are revealed at the start of the show, then they go into an interview and conversation. Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend - Conan interviews celebrities that have been guests on his show and tries to become better friends with them. It gets very silly. Scam Goddess - Jenna wrote about this one, but I'm seconding her recommendation. Laci Mosley is a great host. Speak of the Devils - I'm a big NJ Devils fan so the podcast is a fun way to get the inside scoop. Postcardist - all about postcards! The host is a postcard collector and he talks to other collectors, card designers, dealers, writers, etc.

Casefile is what got me into listening to Podcasts. There are some amazing episodes. It's an Aussie host and probably 50% of the cases are Aus but the others are a mix of countries from around the world. What I like is that it's a single host with no banter and the episodes are always incredibly respectful to the victims and they are always fully named. For example the Belanglo (a rare multi-part one) the there were 7 victims so it took awhile to read them out but they state that they want the victims to be remembered by name. There are 199 episodes and most are amazing. Start at the beginning (production is a bit raw) and work your way forwards. No need to but I like doing it this way.

99% invisible American scandal (one of my faves, they are serialized over 4-6 episodes so you can really get into them) Behind the bastards (2 episodes per week, very interesting but can be infuriating) Decoder Ring Gangster Capitalism (love this one, but they haven't done anything new in a while. All of them have been great.) Hidden brain Hood politics (if you can get over the language) Join us in France Maintenance Phase Invisibilia No F*cks Given Revisionist History Sawbones Stuff you should know about Twenty Thousand Hertz
These I like but in smaller quantities: The Scathing atheist Knowledge Fight (listening the host's laughter and Alex Jone's voice is only doable in small amounts) QAnon Anonymous

I've been listening to Murdaugh Murders, about the crazy unfolding murder case unfolding in rural South Carolina. The host is an investigative journalist, and she is carefully following all the intertwined threads of the case. It's really good, and I can't wait until Wednesdays when the new episodes drop.

I like Southern Fried True Crime. I really like the host's voice, and their patron saint is Dolly Parton. What more could you want!

I'm very new to podcasts, and I have only listened to two of them so far. There is a big back catalogue to get through. Both of them are true crime. Life and Crimes with Andrew Rule - Andrew Rule is a crime journalist, who co-wrote the Underbelly series of crime books with John Silvester. I LOVE his style, it's very conversational and he doesn't sound like he is reading. True Crime Conversations by Jessie Stephens. Most of the crimes are Australian, and she also does a lot from the US and a few from other countries. She interviews people who were a part of the original investigation, whether it's a detective or a journalist. And now thanks to jenna and AllieC I just listened to my first episode of Casefile True Crime. I skipped ahead to episode 3, which is a US case, because I'd recently listened to podcasts of the other two crimes. It's easy to listen to, but his style isn't as natural as Andrew Rule - you can definitely tell he is reading. Thanks for the thread, I am going to check out some of the podcasts recommended here.

"Casey" as he is affectionately known by fans LOL - his narrating style gets more natural as he goes along. It still sounds like reading but he is more polished. I love it because the stories generally are much more detailed than ones of the same cases that I've listened to elsewhere. The Daniel Morecombe one is exceptional.

Current favorites are Murdaugh Murders by Mandy Matney, The Dropout, and Armchair Expert with Dax (which is only on Spotify).
I also like Heidi Swapps Light the Fight, especially season 1, for parenting teens.

Thank you thank you for this recommendation, I've just listened to the first episode. It is fabulous!! I loved the show Scrubs, and Zach & Donald's characters were brilliant. I literally laughed out loud during the podcast, especially when they were talking about Donald's baby teeth and braces. I am so happy that they are good friends IRL.

Yes, the Daniel Morcombe episode is stellar! I have listened to a LOT of true crime podcasts, and this episode is the very best of any episode of any show. It had me in absolute tears by the end. I was living in Australia, a few hours from where Daniel disappeared from, when it happened. I will never forget that face in that picture that was everywhere. 'Casey' and the team pay a lot of attention to the families of victims, and how the effects of a crime echoes through a community, even a country. Many podcasts only pay attention to the incident, not the lasting effect of it.

I really like The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry, if you're into popular science. Adam Rutherford is a geneticist/evolutionary biologist, and Hannah Fry is a Mathematician and they answer listener questions on scientific issues. They have are up to season 18 (I think) now, and the most recent episode I listened to was about Guide Dogs, and how they are trained to guide their owners. It was originally a radio program on the BBC, but has evolved a bit over the years.

I never watched The West Wing, but funnily enough a friend was telling me on the weekend that she's started binge watching it and is loving it. I said that I was going to start watching it too, because I've always heard good things about it. THEN I can listen to the podcast!

Thank you! I put many of these on my phone!
I did start ESCAPING NXIVM (pronounced nexium)
About the self proclaimed humanitarian community but really a high profile cult / sex cult and one woman’s journey to get out. It has a very local connection as the woman grew up in my city and went to high school down the street from me even though the cult was based in New York. We are considered the Hollywood of the north and when i was in uni there were a few popular shows being filmed here. Some of these actresses ran / were in this cult. I’m really enjoying it. It’s a CBC investigative podcast.
