I think we may have some peas in the areas that the many devastating tornadoes swept through last night. Please check in and let us know that you are okay.
The area in Western Ky has been especially hard hit. I grew up in that area so it is really hard to see all the devastation on the news. So far everyone I know still there seems to be okay. Keeping those affected in my prayers today as they deal with the aftermath.

I have been watching it on TWC. It is truly massive devastation. They said the tornado traveled over 200 miles. I cannot even imagine! Praying for the families!!

Checking in from Louisville in the northern part of the state. We were spared. So horrific what is happening the SW part. Governor estimating deaths in excess of 50 and possible 75-100. State of emergency declared. Just read an update from Pres. of WKU that an off-campus student tragically was lost this morning, on the day he was set to graduate.

Thinking of his family there with such great joy for his future, in an instant, their world is destroyed. The whole tornado is awful, but this just hit me hard.

Awful and powerful storms. The pictures of a candle factory, church, jail, Amazon distribution center and other structures at the link are chilling. Keeping the affected states' peas in my thoughts. ""We believe our death toll from this event will exceed 50 Kentuckians, probably end up closer to 70 to 100 lost lives," Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said at a briefing Saturday morning." www.cnn.com/2021/12/11/weather/severe-weather-tornadoes-saturday/index.html

I'm in AR and just had wind and thunderstorms. My ODS lives in NE AR, just a few miles north of where the ones hit. He and all of his friends are good. The nursing home is a tragedy. As is all of it. I'm about to get dressed to go survey the yard for branches and to straighten up what the wind blew askew.

So tragic, not that it matters, but was there any warning? It seems like an extremely large path, from the point if view of someone not from traditional tornado country.
That story about the graduate does seem excessively tragic, I pray for everyone who is touched by this storm.

Skellinton it has been reported that Mayfield KY had up to 25 minutes warning. It was a unique tornado, both time and distance.

There was warning. There were alerts all yesterday about this storm and the expectation for tornados. However, knowing there is a possibility for tornados and what actually happens are two completely different things. There just isn't any preparation for this level of destruction. I have lived in tornado alley the majority of my life. Since moving to Nebraska I am so very thankful for having a basement. I do not miss those days in Texas hiding in the bathtub praying we ride it out unscathed.

I am just seeing news here, thank you for responding and not making me feel like an idiot. I really have no idea on what is "normal" for a tornado but 200 miles seems very large and I feel like usually we hear more about incoming tornadoes on the news.

This was not a typical storm. Nobody expects something like this to happen. Looking at the pictures of a leveled town is heartbreaking.

Here the news carry on for days if a snowflake is predicted and most of us in the Pacific Northwest know if they predict snow it isn't going to happen. It always sneaks up unannounced. Of course, only an inch requires our entire town to shut down. We don't have anything like tornadoes or hurricanes around here. I guess I was surprised we had not heard more about it beforehand on the national news I am really sorry for everyone in the path of the storm.

DH told me they may say it was the largest/longest tornado on record. So much loss of life and damage. It's hard to watch the footage or see the photos.

This has been in our local news all week. But they talk in terms of potential and weather patterns. As the storm develops, it becomes clearer what may happen. There are levels: You may be under a "watch" which means that conditions are favorable for a certain event to take place. This can be upgraded to a "warning" if the actual event happens (e.g. funnel cloud/a tornado has been detected on the ground). It's important to watch the news and have some kind of warning system for yourself. There are tornado sirens, but many people rely on weather apps to alert them. I kept my phone turned on and by my bed last night in case our watch went to a warning. At that point, I would grab DH and the dog and head for the basement right away.
p.s. I did not grow up with tornadoes being from CA. I had to learn all this. My first house here did not have a basement and I rode out one in my interior bathroom with no windows in the tub with pillows over my head.

Don’t all/most houses in tornado alley have basements or those small shelters in the garage/house floor? Hiding in a tub just sounds horrifying.

So tragic. I couldn't sleep last night, so I was watching live coverage on Tic Tok at 1 a.m. The meteorologist kept saying "If you know someone in the path of the storm call them and tell them to take cover." There is nothing more deadly than a rain wrapped massive tornado at night.

No. In many areas, the ground is unsuitable for basements due to the water table level or because the ground is too rocky. Having no basement is a deal breaker for me in the Midwest.

I grew up in tornado prone areas (including one of the ones hit last night) and we never had a basement or storm cellar. As a child we hid under a bed, then later the advice changed to hiding in an inner room/area with no windows. And yes, it is terrifying.

I grew up with tornadoes but have lived nearly my entire adult life in hurricane or earthquake territory. Have always said I'd take the hurricane over either of those any day. You have advance notice and can react.

I’m in KY. We had a tornado watch literally all night, but nothing in our area.
Prayers for everyone in Western KY, they were hit so hard. I was watching on the news when they first noticed the echo there. The weatherman was so worried, he knew it was not a good situation.

Wow. I can’t watch. Another naive Southern California native snd assumed that most had basements. I can’t imagine hiding in a bathtub that sounds terrifying. A basement with that going in overhead sounds bad enough. Tornado watches lasting all night. The photos I have seen are just incomprehensible. So much destruction.
Prayers for all effected
