I know/interact with very very few people that are unvaccinated. (Full disclosure) so my “pool” of unvaccinated folks is very, very small. Do you know anybody that is fully vaccinated and has ended up in the ICU since vaccines were readily available? Or unvaccinated? I know 2 people who did not want to be vaccinated. One in her 40s-she ended up hospitalized for just about 3 months and just got out. She has permanent lung damage and is in oxygen. She now needs a walker to move around. No underlying conditions. My friend’s mom also ended up in the ICU and intubated. Not expected to make it. It just makes me so frustrated and sad.

I’m a nurse, and yes, there have been a few vaccinated, but not boostered in our hospital in the ICU, however they have been elderly 80+ and not in great heath.

Not in the ICU but 4 day stay in the hospital. 72 yr old, received booster, no underlying medical conditions.
I also know of 2 vaccinated teens who were admitted for 2 weeks. No booster shots.

My DH (65, T2 diabetes and overweight) was vaccinated and still ended up with Covid in Aug (most likely Delta). He ended up in Covid ICU for a total of 5 weeks and rehab for 1 week. Every doctor that worked with him said he was a miracle and survived due to being vaccinated. He is doing well now thanks to rehab therapy and now a personal trainer who specializes in rehab work. There are still some issues (stamina and brain fog) and he will be in follow up care for the next year.
I'm sorry about your friends. I hope the one in her 40s is able to make further improvement with her health. Sending prayers for your friend's mom and their family.

No. I don’t personally know anyone who has been hospitalized with it but we have a pretty high percentage of vaccine/booster uptake in my area. DH has a bunch of unvaxxed friends. Some have gotten Covid and a few have been pretty sick but none have landed in the hospital. Yet.

Not personally. I was quite sick with pneumonia in November. The urgent care doctor sent me to the ER. The ER doctor said I was safer at home than the hospital, as the hospital was full of unvaccinated patients. He also thanked my husband and I for being vaccinated.

Yes. The father of my dd's roommate, fully vaccinated (but not boosted because this was right before boosters were available) with Moderna ended up in the ICU. He was there for four or five days, then moved to a step-down room, then home. Two days later he was back in the hospital, but not ICU this time, still having trouble breathing. Turns out he had developed pneumonia. He's recovered now but still have fatigue and physically can't do what he used to be able to do.

One of my BFF's sister died of covid after 45 days in the ICU. She was vaccinated, but not boosted. She was 59 and had many health issues, including a kidney transplant.

A friend's father recently died of Covid after 10 days in the ICU. He was an anti-vaxxer.
The family begged him to get vaccinated and also implored others to get vaxxed in his obituary.

I know of three (all unvaccinated) :
1. Friend from church -- 50ish male, before vaccines back in March 2020, no underlying conditions. Ended up in ICU, then intubated, then ECMO. Almost died. After many months he pulled through, went to rehab and is back home. Has greatly diminished lung capacity but still seems like he can get around and do activities, go out. Pretty miraculous.
2. My friend's son-in-law -- 30ish male, unvaccinated, no underlying conditions. Same story as above (ICU, intubated, ECMO) but did not fare as well. Ended up needing a double lung transplant which was successful. Is recovering at home, but I fear for his future. Married with young children.
3. Coworker of DH -- 50ish male, unvaccinated, obese. Same story as above (ICU, intubated, ECMO) but unfortunately died after a few months.

None who were vaccinated.
My BIL (unvaxxed) just got Covid and was fortunate to receive the antibody infusion very early into the illness. His dr also put him on two antibiotics (I think prophylactically) and remdesevir. He lost 12 lbs in 10 days but came through comparatively well. He is 78.
My friend who has lupus and is on immune suppressant meds did contract Covid despite being 2x vaccinated. She was very sick at home for three weeks but did not require hospitalization.

The closest one I know of is a co-worker of DH's. We don't know the vaccination status but there was a note in the last team meeting that he had been admitted to the hospital. Not sure if he was in ICU or not.
The only person I know personally who died in ICU was my aunt who tested positive but was not there because of covid, but rather other health issues. My cousins are already saying if her death certificate says covid at all, they're suing. I think only one is vax'd because he's military and has to if he wants to keep his job (nearly 15 years in).

I am actually not sure if she went to the ICU, but the mother of DH’s closest friend growing up moved into a home recently and quickly contracted COVID. They are releasing her to hospice to die. She was already very ill with dementia and other issues, which was why her family moved her into a support facility in the first place (she is in her 70s so not that old but her husband has advanced Parkinson’s and can’t care for her).

My husband’s sister was unvaccinated and ended up in ICU. After 30 days, she was a little better and was moved to a rehab facility. She died a few days later in the rehab place.
My husband begged her many times to get vaccinated. The last time they talked about it, she said she would rather get Covid and develop antibodies the natural way.
Her adult children are still anti vaxxers.

Yes, there are vaccinated patients in the ICU, but they make up a very small percentage of the total COVID pts in the ICU. I am getting my info from the stats our hospital shares with us every week.

My colleague who had both vaccinations (but not boosted) was in the ICU for over two weeks before she died in September. She was 65 but had no underlying health issues.

The people I know who have died or had major complications are all unvaxed. (or had it before the vax was available)

I know one person who ended up in the hospital for a few days on O2 that I think was vaccinated (she may not have been but I think she was). She is in her early 40's and healthy, but everyone else I have known that lived or died in the ICU was unvaccinated. Three of them were before vaccines were (readily or at all) available.

The issue that I am wondering about is how many ICU/Vents/deaths were from the Omicron Variant? Hoping that it is not putting as many people in peril and filling up our hospitals.
I personally know of one death (serious underlying conditions) and three ICU stays, but that was Alpha, before vaccinations.

Our local hospital posts the stats every week. It states how many covid patients were admitted, how many in ICU, how many intubated, and then it also gives vaccination status. Although there are fewer vaccinated patients in ICU or intubated, the ratio is starting to be closer than it was before. It doesn't say how many have died the previous week.
Personally, I know of one person that was fully vaccinated, and has had covid twice--in the hospital once for over 3 weeks--in ICU intubated for several days. She is home with home health now. Not sure of any underlying conditions.

I've personally known two people who were fully vaccinated who died of covid. They were both severely immunocompromised due to chemo. They were both very careful to minimize exposure, but they both got it and died very quickly.

Most everyone we know is vaccinated. Only a one has gotten covid and just had mild symptoms. Their families were vaccinated and no one else got it. If only everyone was vaccinated.
