I am so thankful there are still people like your nephew who are willing to do this dangerous job. I hope he and his fellow officers know that a lot of us appreciate and respect what they do. Please tell him thank you.

What an insightful young man! I live near Ferguson and it scares me to death to think of not having police officers. Thank him for me too! I loved the last sentence about don't judge me because I am blue!

What a fantastic essay. I am thankful there are so many like your nephew who are willing to put on their blue uniform and put their lives on the line each day. The fact that he can and chooses to see the good in people after dealing with the "bad guys" day in and day out is a true testament to his strong character. Thank you for sharing his wonderful post.

I come from a law enforcement family. My Dad was a Chief of police, I have 2 uncles that are police officers. I was always raised, and taught that being in law enforcement was an honor, a service. So I totally don't get the hate on them? or the mindset that they are just out to get everyone. I can't read your nephews post at work, but plan to when I get home. Thank you.

I appreciate the sacrifice made by your nephew -- and his family. But -- there is a huge mistake in that posting that seriously diminishes it. The police officer was NOT "tried by a jury of his peers" -- it was found by a Grand Jury that there was no probable cause to charge the Officer with a crime. Huge difference. Most of the protesting public WANTS the officer charged with a crime and tried by a jury.

But that's what makes this country great, we can respectfully disagree.

Thanks for sharing that Nink it is expressed so well. I also have a nephew who is a police officer, married to my niece with a toddler. He wants to work his shift and come home to his wife and son. The media for the most part has allowed Officer Wilson and law enforcement in general to be painted with a broad brush as racists and that is part of the problem.

Well said. There has been much I have wanted to say about this mess, but so far had refrained from doing so. Until now.
I have a bsc degree in the field, have been sworn, am trained as a csi and in analysis, studied multiple psych and law classes, socioIology, cultural studies, etc etc..I can't tell you how much emphasis is placed on community policing and cultural studies among other things.
Of the two departments I have worked in, (in two southern states, no less), I have not met one officer who gave a crap about skin color or country of origin. I myself can't comprehend the issue with skin color. I couldn't care less if someone was brown, white, black, or pink with purple spots (though I may find that one interesting).
Cops risk their lives on a daily basis, but suddenly, simply because they're in uniform, they have no right to defend themselves against attack, assault, possible death? Ffs! They want to go home to their families at the end of their shift, not wind up in a body bag because they *trusted* that the perp who was assaulting them, high, and trying to take their gun away wasn't really trying to do anything wrong.

I caught a little bit of the local news last night where a reporter was questioning the chief of police in a neighboring area. (The chief happens to be black.)
The reporter asked the chief if having a black chief, as well as a broad ethnic and minority background of police officers differentiated the area from Ferguson. I can't recall the exact quote and I can't find it on-line but the reply was something to the effect of "when a black man or a Latino man or a white man puts on the uniform, they become blue. And in some of our communities, being blue makes you an enemy regardless of your good intentions".

My dh, who was boots on ground Navy, says that he could not be a police officer.
It's is a hard job and I thank the officers who do this crazy job.

So I totally don't get the hate on them? or the mindset that they are just out to get everyone. I can't read your nephews post at work, but plan to when I get home. Thank you. DH is a cop and I haven't posted on any of the "cop killing" threads because I don't think what I say will make a difference but there is a HUGE hate for cops which I don't get either. We have had our tires slashed. KC lights knocked off our Jeep. "Pig" wrote on my blue line sticker (huge mistake to stick that kind of stick on your car!). We don't eat in town which is fine because everything here sucks but we know if we did our food would be messed with due to it happening with other guys in dept. I was turned down for a job because of my DH job...I'm 100% positive about this as I was told on the side the reason. There isn't a lot of things in life I will say I'm positive of but one is I know DH is a fair man to people on his job...I know if he is treated with respect he will give you respect right back. I have always felt there are 2 kinds of cops. 1- the ones who get into law enforcement because they were bullied at school/in life and now have some big ego to fill and this is how they do it. 2- the ones who have law enforcement as their calling. DH is #2. I just want my DH to come home to me safe each day...when he walks out the door it's always in the back of my head "will I see him again". So while I totally support him and his job it's not easy being on this side of the fence..when you get more hate from people then support. It's life though and you try and make the best out of it.
