I'm kind of amazed by this actually. I bought seaweed salad from Costco, from the refrigerated section. It was an experiment to put some more vegetables into me and dh. It was a failed experiment. We took one spoonful out, tasted it, and said nope. I was going to throw it away but then I thought what the heck, I see people put food items on Buy Nothing from time to time, including sauces and condiments that have been opened. So let me try it. I put up two photos, one of the container with lid on, and one showing how much was left (which was most of it since we only took out a spoonful). I listed the best-by date. Ten minutes later I have FIVE people who were interested! omg The person I chose has been here to pick up other Buy Nothing stuff from me but I don't know her at all...we wouldn't know each other if we passed on the street. Honestly, I would never in a million years take an opened food item from someone I didn't know. I would take this type of item from someone I knew well because I could trust them when they said "we only put one spoon in it and it's been stored properly since then". But from a stranger? Oh well....I'm happy I didn't have to throw it away, but I'm just amazed.

I am glad it wasn’t wasted but I wouldn’t take opened food from a stranger either.

No way. For some reason, I even get squicked out when I see unopened food products at thrift stores. Not sure why...but I do. Last week, I was at a thrift store in Atlanta, and there was a big display of cans of evaporated milk, and they were all dented or in some cases, almost smashed looking. And, they were all expired. I was thinking, "who the hell will buy these??"

I wouldn't take opened food, but I'm also in a position where I don't have to. A lot of people are not as fortunate.

Probably not, but I’ve given away many many home cooked meals on my Buy Nothing. I also have given away open bottles of supplements and food products.
Come to think of it, I accepted some gluten free home baked goodies when DH first started eating that way.
Knock on wood, I’ve never been burned on BN. I’ve loaned things out, borrowed things, etc.

I see it all the time as well but I definitely wouldn’t. I like that there are people who don’t have issues with it because I hate to waste food. I especially like to see the posts for half-eaten birthday cake and party food. It’s hard to estimate how much you’ll need for a party and that can easily go to waste.

In theory yes. But I’m not squeamish about stuff like that.

We love seaweed salad in this house, but I'd never take it from a stranger. I am always amazed at the half eaten food that ends up in our group. Someone posted 3/4 of a Costco pumpkin pie, 1/2 a regular size pecan pie and 1/3 of a red velvet Nothing Bundt cake after Thanksgiving dinner and it was all snagged up.

I wouldn't take opened food and I've never seen it offered on my BN group. But I do see unopened food offered all the time and quickly snatched up. I offered a box of cereal and it was quickly taken, even after a miscommunication and she had to come by again.

Well, I don’t think I would. Once someone offered a leftover (untouched, other than made by loving hands at home) pan of orange jello on my Freecycle. She added that you had to bring your own pan to move it into, because she wanted her pan. Craziest of all, someone took it. After that, my Freecycle made a rule that there could be no open food items listed. But my real interest here is, what exactly is Buy Nothing? Is it like Freecycle? Because my Freecycle folded and I really miss it. No place to give away my hoarded favorites anymore. wahhhhh

Seaweed salad is a bold choice for veggies! I love it but it’s certainly an acquired taste.

But my real interest here is, what exactly is Buy Nothing? Buy Nothing is a moderated Facebook group. You join based on geography and people can Ask or Give items. Typical Ask in my group were for beach toys when grandchildren visit and Halloween costumes and Gives are everything from half eaten food to furniture and everything in between.

It was started to facilitate neighbors getting to know each other. We love our group.

I’m excited about this! Thanks, you all.

There’s a group in my small town with almost 1,000 members, so I’ve applied for membership. I’m excited about this! Thanks, you all. For me the best thing about Buy Nothing vs. Freecycle, at least around here, is that Buy Nothing is broken up into neighborhoods whereas our Freecycle group is county-wide. I have no desire to drive across the county to pick up some random small thing, but for a lot of my Buy Nothing group I can walk to the person's house. I've gotten to know quite a few people through my BN group, including a sweet service- dog-in-training who took some of my dog's toys and costumes after we put down our dog. His owner regularly walks him by my house so he can demonstrate all the new things he's learning. One thing he needs to work on is not being distracted by someone who's trying to talk to him so we practice that. lol I've also borrowed a few things. The biggest was a wagon, the kind with sides, for our dog. In her last days she couldn't walk at all and before Lap of Love came to euthanize her we wanted to take her around the neighborhood. On her last day we took her around so people could say goodbye and so she could see her best friend. -- I also recently borrowed a side-opening can opener to try out a suggestion that someone gave here for a cute way to wrap up cash (open a pop-top can from the bottom, wash it, put money in, then super-glue the bottom back on). We wanted to see if it would work. It did, but also my dh was so impressed with that can opener that we ordered one for ourselves. lol Anyway, we love Buy Nothing.

No way would I take opened food from a stranger. It's funny that you posted this today. Just yesterday someone posted on my local Buy Nothing site a huge tub of cheese balls from Costco. Their son had begged them to buy it, then he had one taste and didn't like them, so she's giving it away. That's the fist time I've seen food on there, but admittedly I haven't been a member for long.
