racial slur? I'm in a group on Facebook that like all groups has rules for posting, everyone is meant to read the rules and comment that we agree with them. An American lady commented that she thought anyone using the word Yanks should be banned and reported for racism. She feels very strongly that the word is only ever used as a racial slur. What does everyone think? I have to admit to being a bit and if this is a stupid question I apologise in advance!!

Racial? What race does she think a 'yank' is?
I'm not saying that some people don't use it in a derogatory manner but the word is regional, not racial.

Color me too. I'm curious to see what people think about this word because it doesn't offend me. Who is it supposed to offend?

Well.. I would consider "Yankee" to be the opposite of "Southerner". Not racial, but regional, as Dalai Mama said.

I think I need to spend some time with Google...

I don't consider it to be racial at all, it has nothing to do with race. Perhaps she meant cultural or social? I have only ever heard it used as a short term for 'American' in general, just like Australians are 'aussies' or British are 'brits' or 'poms'
Eta: is she getting confused with the term 'Discrimination'? Which could be used as a cultural or social definition. Some people are unaware that discrimination and racism are different.

And does she want them to stop publishing Yankee magazine (I'd be mad if they did - I love it!)?

The only way I view yank as in to yank hair or yank teeth. I don't ever think of yank as a racial term.

Within the US, I would guess it's only Americans in the northern states?
Until the US comes up with a word other than 'Americans' to differentiate its citizens from citizens of other countries, Canadians aren't Americans. North Americans, maybe, but not Americans.

She has even equated it to the n word and the term raghead. That's just ridiculous in my opinion. I think it's a case of "I'm going to be offended by something dammit, so let me see...oh, I know..." ETA: and to answer the OP's question I don't find it even remotely close to a racial slur. There's a gal at work from the UK and when we talk she says "you yanks" frequently and I actually find it kinda charming. Of course I could listen to her talk for days.

I definitely don't consider it a slur. But here in the South it would be somewhat of an insult This Texan is offended by the idea that all Americans are yanks.

I think people try too hard to find some kind of racial offense to a lot of words and things where none exists. IMO people like that need to put the energy into being offended into something more positive. It's like some people really dig hard to find something wrong where there isn't anything wrong.

I agree. I hear "Brits" use the term to mean Americans, and it doesn't bother me at all. Different words used by different people indicate different things. But to say it's a racial slur makes absolutely no sense to me at all, no matter who says it. If you are outside the US, and use to refer to those who live in the states, then you are using the term for a multitude of races. If you live in the southern US and use it to refer to those in the northern states, then again, you are covering many races.

Here is a question...if I, as a southerner, called someone from up north a "yankee" would you be offended? Or would you assume that it was a regional qualifier??

When I lived in Australia it was normal to refer to Americans as Yanks. Not in a derogatory way, just a geographical description. I know several British people who use the word Yank the same way. And the Brits call the Australians 'Aussies'.
I have never taken the word Yank as being a racist comment. Unless it was by a Southener in a period piece from the Civil War, cause they sound like they call each other 'yank' and 'southener' and not mean it in a good way.

Not offensive- it's what my husband's hillbilly relatives call us. Fyi - we are all of the same race. And it's as funny to us as it is to them when we refer to them as hillbillies. Everything is not about race. Good Lord, people are overly sensitive.

Ask her what she thinks of the word "Goofball." 'Cause she is one.
(I think "Yank" is a descriptor nonAmericans use for all Americans, and "Yankee" is a descriptor southerners use for northerners. So, in usage and origin of user, different.)

Yep, and it isn't a word used as an insult or slur. Used rather in the manner of Brit, in the reverse case.
