It's January and I'm trying my best to do a half-ass "what sparks joy" clean-out. Going to visit two of my kids who are newer to setting up households, so took a picture of the following to see if they were interested, otherwise all the crystal is getting donated: -a Pacific pottery cake plate in a light turquoise -rose color fiesta platter (figured this would get fought over, they both wanted the baby blue fiesta bowls when they moved out) -huge cut crystal relish platter (this sucker would knock out a home intruder in a second, it's big and heavy) -big lidded crystal candy dish -cut crystal footed serving bowl -couple of smaller cut crystal bowls/platters DD19 wants ALL the crystal stuff and is super excited about it!!  So I offered to see if I can find more and she responds with "AWESOME!!" |

Interesting.
My 31YO son is all about clean lines and simple designs, but I could totally see the fancy cut crystal and other fancy stuff coming back in fashion as a relief from the modern home decor of the past several years.

My DD got my mother's china from her. It is the Lenox plain white with a silver band. Solitaire, I think. Or that may be my china. Anyway, she was so excited to host Friendsgiving with her china. When we visited my mom at Christmas I think she got a bit more of her "good stuff". I don't know that she got any crystal though. She can have what she wants of mine. I don't use it and quite frankly, don't ever foresee using it.
Now if I could get my hands on the crystal used by the Bennetts in Pride and Prejudice (Kiera Knightly version), I would use it daily!

I spent my teens scouring garage sales with my Grandma and collecting Depression Glass. After sitting in the cabinet, taking up space and not being used in years I finally decided to donate it. Maybe someone else will be collecting and hit the mother-load at goodwill. Or maybe nobody cares anymore. My pattern was Waterford (sometimes called waffle).
No worries, because my mother has 2 sets of depression glass that I'll inherit someday. Dark green square dishes and a aqua-swirl pattern.

Yes, it's definitely coming back in style. So is chintz and dark furniture. Basically, all the stuff we've been getting rid of for the past 10 years! It's called Grandmillenial style.
Before my mother died 5 years ago, she offered her crystal to DD. She took every bit of it and was thrilled to bits! The girl keeps a crystal bowl full of lemons in her refrigerator! Good for her - using and enjoying it. She has a small apartment, so a few pieces are here for safe keeping and I have to admit I like having them out to look at.

I could see the switch, too. Most of my kids teen years they have selected very minimal designs in black-white-gray schemes. They've officially lived with it enough years they are probably getting sick of it! |

YES!! The Great Carpezio, those blue vases and ginger jars! My mom had so many. I had some and wasn't using them so DD wanted those. Well, it appears my mom took mine and then decided to put some of her things in a garage sale. I told DD that Mimi had plenty. Well, not so much any longer but DD did come home with 3-4 of the blue/white stuff. |

I have my grandmother's Art Deco cut crystal cake stand. It's gorgeous and I use it for every cake I make. It gets a lot of use. And I'm going to inherit an amber crystal domed container when my mom passes.
Other than that, I don't really want a lot of cut crystal items. And I have sons who aren't into fancy stuff, or decorating, so I passed on a lot of items when we downsized my mom's house.

I think the issue with older generations is they collected all this stuff that used to be only for the wealthy and then never used it because it was too fancy and expensive. I used the shit out my husband’s china. They were our everyday dishes the first year of our marriage. After 31 years and lots of moves we’ve lost/broken pieces and we don’t use it very often now.
Instead of donating depression glass, I’d use it as intended if at all possible. If you break it, it at least brought you joy while you used it.

Yes, grandmillennial is the upcoming design look. Good for her wanting to have some "pretties". I have lived through quite a few looks in my years.  I have one daughter collecting needlepoint pictures to do a collage wall and another that has gone to blue and white decor, ginger jars, plates, napkin rings, etc. |

My friend works at a high end gift store in another state. She said brides and grooms are registering China in big, bold colorful patterns. They like to mix and match-the dinner plate will be one pattern while the salad plate will be in a different coordinating pattern and the bread and butter plate will be in a third coordinating pattern. She said some brides will bring China they have inherited from loved ones. For example they might bring in their grandmother’s salad plate and pair it w/ a dinner plate in a modern, coordinating pattern.

I have my mom's (given to her by my dad's mom) Meissen Scattered Flowers tea/coffee service and luncheon plates. I have been using one (very slightly chipped) cup and it's matching saucer for a plant on my desk since then. The rest of it has been sitting in storage for the 10 years since she passed since I don't have a china cabinet. Maybe the time to sell (and I'm all about it helping to finance a trip just like you) is coming soon..... |

I think the issue with older generations is they collected all this stuff that used to be only for the wealthy and then never used it because it was too fancy and expensive  It was absolutely special occasion pieces in our house growing up. I have to give my parents credit though, once the kids moved out they started using the good stuff daily. Most of it survived pretty well. |

Just based on my own Gen Z kids, I'm seeing them being a whole lot more environmentally conscious. Reduce, reuse, repurpose is definitely a thing for them. I'm also seeing quite a bit of sentimentality going on with them too. It's not surprising to me that they would want to reclaim family pieces. And they are not putting anything away for when the Queen visits either. However, I never have been like that either so maybe they just get it from me in this case.

Not crystal, but I have a bunch of Depression glass serving pieces my mom collected and I can't seem to make myself get rid of them. Finally got rid of all her china, but not those glass pieces. Younger DD will definitely be the kind to decorate in the "grandmilennial" style when she gets her first apartment, so maybe she'll want some of it.
There is a particularly heavy and ornate bowl I use for the cranberries at Thanksgiving every year because my mom always used it for that purpose, but I can't remember the last time I used any of it other than that.

My husband was given a set of plates with eagles on them from his mom. Nothing fancy. My late mother in law, bless her, was never, ever one to keep a clean house, and she had 6 cats. Fast-forward to him "taking" the plates as we helped them clean (some of) the house a few years ago. MIL: "Did you take those plates?" Husband: "Yes, mom. [Straight into the dumpster we ordered.]" You could've run those dishes through the dishwasher a thousand times and we wouldn't have eaten off of them.  |

I feel like with young adults (and adults) - definitely not. The trend is more organic, clean lines, and mid century modern look.
However I feel the age range around 19 (which I don’t quite consider young adults) isn’t so concerned about what is “in” and are more into funky/eclectic stuff.

I've seen a good bit of it for sale on some Instagram pages (grandmillenialshop is one), and it always sells pretty quickly. Not sure about the silverplate flatware though. I have an entire set of Wm H Rogers flatware in the original wood storage chest. I don't use it and DD isn't crazy about the pattern - or the fact that it really needs to be handwashed. |

My parents with one being a NON-drinker bought every size of crystal glass made. My dad says it’s as good as Waterford and it isn’t. I sold China, crystal and expensive giftware and ours is lovely but not Waterford. I wished I had started my self collecting it at my discount but didn’t . I will replace the everyday dishes in the kitchen though. I hate them.

Funny thing is, many of the pieces mom gave her I had never seen. Asked mom about it and she said she kept them put away so we kids wouldn't break them. So glad they are being used now. |
