My System Preferences icon on my iMac has a red 1 badge. I opened the System Preferences, clicked on Software Update (which also has the red 1 badge) and it just spins on Checking for Updates. I let it spin for over 15 minutes and it never stops. I've shut down and restarted and the same thing happens.
A few months ago I checked and it was to upgrade to the Monterey (I think) OS. I was not ready to do that so I skipped it.
My current version is macOS Big Sur 11.5.2 and I saw there are at least 2 new Big Sur updates.
So my question, how do I get it to stop "checking for updates" and find them?

It is reading what you have. I just looked at mine. I'm on Monterey 12.1. I will say it's best for your computer to keep it up to date. You may try to do a Google search and see what it says. There may not be any Big Sur updates available. That could be why it is spinning so long. Oh and make sure you're plugged in when you do this. That could help too.
If you still have trouble call Apple.
