This happened at our high school on Friday. They just removed the school resource officers last year. Thankfully my son graduated in 2021 and my daughter has been out of the school for quite some time. The kid brought a ghost gun he bought online and shot the 15 year old. He is 17 and charged as an adult so his name was released. The 15 year old is expected to live. Then the 17 year old when and sheltered in place with the other students with ammo and the dismantled gun in his sock. The story really makes me mad because kids were tweeting about it INSTEAD of calling 911? Sounds like my county needs to have more active shooter drills and what to do when it happens. Like NOT TWEETING ABOUT IT! Stupid kids. I live in a very affluent county in Maryland and I think the kids have been desensitized to what can happen. My county (actually my town and the surrounding towns) were the site of the sniper incident that happened almost 20 years ago. Lee Boyd Malvo terrorized our community for about a month. There were several instances where I just missed him when he killed people in the community and our schools were constantly in lockdown mode and had drills every single day. I think we have forgotten what that was like. Story

school resource officers do not prevent this stuff. with or without them, kids do stupid stuff. and with guns available, it is serious stupid stuff.

I am really sorry this happened at your high school. I agree with you. I can’t believe the kids went on social media instead of calling 911 or letting the staff know. The shooter’s father sounds like a real prize. Now we know where he got his attitude.

I'm near your area (northern VA) and ITA about the kids needing more active shooter drills and maybe need to see the news stories from the fall of 2002. Or maybe hear directly from people affected by gun violence. I think they've been de-sensitized to this type of thing. They also get caught up in the moment when they're scared or angered or whatever and don't have the judgement skills to make good decisions (mostly because they're young and haven't developed that yet, but there are other factors).
My family remembers the Lee Boyd Malvo terrorization of this area. Middle DD was in elementary school - cancelled recesses, lockdowns, drills, her travel soccer practices and games were moved to an indoor field at Ft. Belvoir. All the talk (some in hushed voices), rumors, etc. were jarring to her and her classmates & teammates. It was a scary time here!

I saw the story on World News Tonight the other day. So sad!
I remember the sniper too. I was watching CNN and saw my parent's local middle school on the news. A boy was shot outside the school and he survived.
Our local high school in Pittsburgh does active shooter drills.

Ironically, I was just listening to a podcast where one of the morning show's guy's son attends Macgruder HS (the Sports Junkies on 106.7).
I'm in St. Mary's Co, about 90 min away from Montgomery Co. We had our (first, I think) school shooting in March 2019. We are in a much more rural part of MD, so I am kind of surprised this hadn't already happened in MoCo (terrible assumption for me to assume that kids up there would have more access as they are closer to the city (Washington DC)). In our case, it was a boy who shot a girl who broke up with him, and then he shot himself. The SRO was on site, and I believe helped quite a bit. I am really surprised to hear that MoCo no longer has SROs!
I remember when the Sniper was at large, I was pg with my DD and I can remember my husband having me walk in zig zags! I also remember thinking how dumb he would be to come down to this area bc we are on a pennisula, with like 2 ways out - he would trap himself if he came down here. But we were all on high alert.
I am glad that caught the shooter and that he will be charged. I truly wish I knew why kids think gun violence is the answer.

The thing is the kids in school now were not in school when the sniper incident was going on. These kids haven't had any exposure to these types of incidents and doing a drill once a semester (which is how often Montgomery County would do them) is simply not enough. I know there is going to be a lot of discussion today at Magruder. Hopefully something will come out of it but knowing the principal (I am very aware of what this guy's shortcomings are) I know it won't. Dr. Evans' heart in the right place but he usually puts his foot in his mouth.

I do remember that shooting! It was all over the news and it really resonated with the entire state! The whole sniper thing really freaked me out bc I was in the same locations on 2 different days that he struck. I was there not 10-15 minutes before he was there. It really scared the crap out of me to the point where I didn't want to leave my house.

If the boy who was shot dies, there were many who by neglect assisted the shooter.

I am not that surprised that kids took to twitter. Look at how many tragic things happen and people/adults grab a cell phone to video instead of helping. It is what our society has become. ...and the guns, yes, that also is the mentality of the USA. -- Everyone carry a gun and use it if you are angry.

That is why I was agreeing with you that they need to do more to combat gun violence amongst that population and raise the awareness of it. I hope your community gets the healing it needs from this tragic incident.

I hope the 15 year old will be ok snd that the 17 gets time. I’m glad it wasn’t worse and that he didn’t shoot more kids. Strange that none of the kids called 911 though.

As a high school teacher, I completely disagree with the thought that we do more active shooter drills.
For some kids they are traumatizing, for others they joke about them. If we did them more often, they would be mundane like the 10 fire drills we do a year.
Of course the kids took to social media.
I wouldn't call from my room if there was a shooter. We are trying to hide, not be heard.
HS kids get it. At least ours do. After our evac drill, part of the next class is always devoted to what we just did. My students know exactly what my plan is. I tell them on the first day.
I'm sorry, but those drills are horrible and we don't need more of them. We already know.
