I’m jealous of those that can do audiobooks, I spend so much time in the car it would be easier but my brain just can’t process it. I have only listened to one audio book--Maisie Dobbs. I went on a road trip last winter and listened to it on the way there and on the way home. This morning, I went around my house and gathered up all my unread books that I want to read this year. There are 26 books here. LOL I was going to go through my Kindle and add up those, but I decided this was enough for one day. ![(rofl)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/rofl.png) ![](https://i.postimg.cc/94Z7jcFq/IMG-0846.jpg) Masie Dobbs is my next series after Outlander but I only have books 1, 3, and 4. Went to 2 places today and couldn’t find book 2 but I have a little time. I hope I like it, I’m a visual person so I usually shop by cover artwork and the Dobbs series has cool art work. I might have also picked up Island Queen by Vanessa Riley. It was on my Christmas list but the kids couldn’t find it. I finally found it at our independent book store. I totally should not have bought 2 books today but I just can’t resist. ETA: I see She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb in your stack. Omg he was my creative writing teacher in HS, such a phenomenal person!! He was hands down one of my most favorite teachers. I sucked at writing but he was really supportive.

I still have some Audible credits, so I may use them for those. How cool that Wally Lamb was your teacher! I've had both of those books (She's Come Undone and The Hour I First Believed for a couple of years. I don't know why I have never read them. Which one is your favorite? My teacher claim to fame was my high school writing teacher who was the national Teacher of the Year in 1980. Our yearbook that year had a full page photo of her with Jimmy Carter.

I don't reread books and finally found a good local library, so I just borrow books. I also don't have a place to store books, so that makes it hard to buy. I do have a lot of 99 cent books on my kindle, and I hardly ever use the kindle.

I have also put a moratorium on my book purchases. I am doing it on a one for one basis... read 3, I can get 1. The big book sale I shop at isn't until the fall so I am hoping I'll have gotten through a decent amount by then.

Loved having Wally as a teacher and he still comes back to the school for filming, I actually saw him at my sons graduation too. A full page spread with Jimmy Carter would be cool. National teacher of the year is nothing to slouch about.

I started to count the yet to be read books on my Kindle. I stopped counting at 200. It’s been my one little frivolous expense. I get emails every day with notice of sales, and 1.99 is a price I’ve been willing to splurge on. Unfortunately, I’ve been buying three times faster than I read.
I’ve really gotten tough on myself, and my goal is to make it through most of these by at least only buying books on my favorite authors lists. But sometimes I see something and I just have to have it. I tell myself it’s less than grabbing a Starbucks, which I seldom do.
There’s also the question of what to do with all the unread physical books in the boxes under my bed, many of which I’ve had since before 2015, when I started using the Kindle app. My brain says I should donate them and claim that space, but every time I try, I still think I’ll get to them eventually.
I think I could seriously read 100 books a year for three years without spending another dime.

I get most of my books from the library as ebooks but I do have a large stack of books I need to read and then purge. I keep saying this year I will get through them but get sidetracked by another book at the library. Ebooks are just so easy and I don’t have to even go to the library and I prefer ebooks as they are lighter. I need to start reading my physical books as my bookcase is a mess and overflowing. If I read about 25 and donate them it will look a lot better. Of course my favorite authors keep writing and I usually go for those vs the older books that aren’t part of a series. I should try to do every other book as one from my physical stash. hmmm. I wonder if I could do every other one to chip away at my physical book stash?

I have 61 unread books on my kindle! I’m trying not to buy anymore until I’ve read them. I’ve bought 2 new ones so far this year so it’s not going well!

She’s Come Undone is phenomenal! Good luck with your quest. One of the benefits of age is being able to enjoy books I’ve already read and sometimes they’re completely new!

I also have Libby on my Kindle if I want to use the library. My library seems to have limited items, but I still also have my previous library linked too so I have more options. I have never used my library for Kindle books. The last time I wanted to, I was something like 187 on the wait list, so I ended up just buying it. LOL ETA: I also have no willpower or patience to wait for a book I want to read. I blame Kindle for that. LOL I used to get on wait lists at the library all the time. But now, now that I know I can click one button and be reading the book in a few seconds? NO patience. LOL Hopefully, by June, that will change. What do they say, it takes 30 days to break a habit?? I am almost there--I haven't bought a book since right after Christmas. When I get ideas for books from the reading thread I immediately go to Libby and see if the Library has it. Often there is a wait, but I always have other things that I can read while waiting so it is fine. If it is really long wait I may buy the book but that hasn’t happened for awhile.

I’ll read a book in a week or two and then the next book could sit on the shelf for months. I am trying to make a conscious effort to read more this year though. When I first tried to listen to audiobooks I had a hard time paying attention. For me, the type of book makes a difference. I don’t listen to anything that is too slow moving (like Man Called Ove—hated that on audio) or had unusual sounding names and places (like Outlander and GoT). I like to listen to faster paced books that keep my attention.

I read at least two books a week so it's really hard to justify buying books. I have a bookshelf in my "library" that has almost 400 books on it. I am trying to get that number down but people continue to give me books so the number on the shelf rarely drops. I also order new releases from the local library and when they arrive, those books take priority. Let's just say that I always have something to read and was preparing for my retirement for a long time!

If by "my stash" you mean "the library", then yes, yes I am succeeding! ![(rofl)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/rofl.png) I have a pretty good planning ahead routine going .. In week 1 I'm reading through my "current inventory" and putting holds on books. In Week 2 I return the inventory and pick up the holds I placed last week and place a new round of holds. Sometime last year I decided to go back to mostly physical books - I read before bed and the device backlights definitely keep me awake longer. I do plan to place a few book orders this year - Sarah Addison Allen's new book is available for pre-order (hooray!) and there a few titles soon to be published that haven't yet shown up on my library's catalog. (They do include books in the catalog before they're available for circulation - I can't tell if that's when the order is placed or when the books are received and are being prepped for circulation).

Today, I dove into my Kindle and counted my unread books. It is a completely ridiculous number. 68 I clearly have a problem.

Today, I dove into my Kindle and counted my unread books. It is a completely ridiculous number. 68 I clearly have a problem. I hear you - and think I have lots more unread books on my Kindle than you have… Last year, I saw that I have unread books on my Kindle that I bought ten or more years ago. So, I made a challenge for myself to read those books (or let them go). I concentrated on the books up until 2011. This year, I want to read the books I bought in 2012. ETA: I love that you have started this thread! It really motivates me to only read the books I already own.

I’ll read a book in a week or two and then the next book could sit on the shelf for months. I am trying to make a conscious effort to read more this year though. I never used to listen to audio books.... My mind wanders and before I'd know it I would have lost the thred of what was happening. The only exception was when I was driving to and from Pittsburgh to see my parents I'd listen to Harry Potter. I've read those books so much that even if I stopped paying attention for a bit I'd still know the story. -- For a year I was commuting from Northern Virginia to a hospital over on the other side of DC. My choices for driving were limited... the Beltway ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/JvSt42CUoZ9LG952aAaF.jpg) , or straight across DC ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/JvSt42CUoZ9LG952aAaF.jpg) . I opted for the one-horror-face route and left early in the morning. I thought I could maybe listen to some other books and I tried a few....But I learned that I cannot pay attention to traffic and listen at the same time. So I went back to Harry Potter, or the news on the radio. Fast forward to just a year or so ago when I joined a FB book club type of group. I don't normally read many cozy mysteries but I started listening to them and discovered that they're perfect for me to listen to! There aren't too many characters, there aren't any multiple timelines, and the plots aren't very in-depth. And, I put the speed up to 2x. I've even started listening to them sometimes when I'm doing chores around the house, almost mostly I listen in the car or when I take walks.

That would be me! I have a small stack waiting to be read that I need to get through (although I didn’t purchase all of them, some came from a Little Free Library in my town.) I don’t buy a ton of books anymore because I borrow books from my local library on my Kindle. They actually get a lot of newer titles and have a great selection! I used to buy books all the time but I have a very full bookshelf that I am trying to whittle down. I’m keeping books I really love but there are some I don’t think I’ll read again and I’ve been donating those to the Little Free Library so someone else can enjoy them.

Did you look in your local library for the Maisie Dobbs books? Not yet. We just moved to our new town over the summer but haven’t had time to check out the library. They did just reopen though after converting to a new system where they can share hard copy and digital content with other libraries so I need to go get a card. I usually don’t go to the library much only because I’m a sporadic reader, read a lot and then a book sits on the shelf for months. But my goal this year is to be more consistent and read more.
