Wow, my bite guard is 9 1/2 years old. It was having issues. I didn't want to spend $500 on a new one. I looked at getting one from amazon for $100 (taking my own impressions and mailing it to them) but SO glad I didn't. Thus why I wanted to share here. This is my experience with my newest bite guard from my dentist. First, I went it, and instead of impressions, she took a digital scan of my teeth using a wand. You can see something similar here. And yes, the image of my teeth looked like that shown in this link. It was weird seeing my teeth that way. Digital Dental Scan
She told me that the patients that have received these new guards have been super pleased with the fit, and that they fit better than taking impressions. Come Monday of this week, I picked up my new guard. Oh my word!!!! I cannot tell you how amazed I am. My dentist told me that it cannot be put in denture cleaner, and it cannot be cleaned with a toothbrush and toothpaste. She said because of the material it is made out of that it can only be soaked in mouthwash. When I go in for my 6 month cleanings, they will clean it for me. I asked why, and she said the guard is 3D printed. WOW! And I tell you, it is the best fitting guard I have ever had. It is so, so nice. I don't mind wearing it at all. Now the test is, how long will it last. I pray I get a good 10 years out of it. If you need a new guard, definitely see if your dentist does this now. It's awesome!

I got a new one about 6 months ago and they did the digital scan too, which was SO much nicer than that icky squishy stuff they used to use in the trays that gagged you!
My new one is a very hard clear acrylic and goes on my bottom teeth instead of the top like all the ones I have had in the past did. It seems to be helping. I do lightly scrub it with my toothbrush and toothpaste at night before I put it in. Oh and it has to be run under warm water before putting in. If you don't it is VERY tight and hard to get on.
No idea if mine is 3D printed.

It is supposed to be put under winter before putting in but my dentist said if I feel I don't need it and the fit is good, don't worry about it. I don't need it. The fit is great as is for me. It is tight but so was my other one so I guess I am used to it.

Thank you for sharing this. I want a night guard but I am super, super gaggy. To the point that when we discuss my clenching/possible guard my hygienist tells me the process they have is NOT for me! She’s suggested some over the counter but they make me gag and my mouth automatically expels them with gagging. I wonder if this new one would work? I hate that it’s expensive (I’m guessing) in case I can’t wear it after all due to my gag reflex.

Glad you got a good fitting guard. I've worn one for nearly 30 years and have had several. It's stressful when you have one you like and know it needs to be changed. You never know if the next one will be a good experience. I've certainly had bad and very expensive bad experiences. My last one was the traditional process but it is the best I've ever had. Happy to know there is new technology and more options.

I am so envious! That sounds like a great experience! I have also worn one for about 30 years. I always have that scared/apprehensive feeling when I need a new one.
I got a new one about 2 years ago and moved out of state 6 months later. I got it adjusted right before leaving. Lots of stress and shifting bottom teeth have caused me to need an adjustment. I can’t find anyone that can/will do it.
I did go to one place and agreed to get a new one made. They did the scan with that digital wand. The techs that did it must have been newly trained. It was an awful 2 hour process and the guard ended up being so poorly made and didn’t even fit, that I got my money back.
Your post gives me hope to keep looking for a dentist with more experience. I wish you many great sleeps with your new guard! ☺️

Sounds awesome! My last guard was 900.00. I'm surprised yours is only 500.00.

Are you guys talking about a mouth guard for sleeping at night to prevent clenching/tmj?
I just got my first but its just a little clip on clear plastic piece that clamps on to my front teeth. It was only $300 from my dentist. I had no idea they could get so expensive!

damn, i probably have the yugo of night guards bc mine was only $60 (thank GOD since my dog has eaten mine about 4 times UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH). The pink gel crap makes me gag so bad, so I was always careful to keep the impression so they could make another (when the damn dog ate it, LOL).
I can't sleep without mine!

I clicked on the link and initially thought it was a site you created as it’s pattersondental.com. Please comeback in 6 mons to update on durability. DH is going to need a new one and we were quoted $700. 😬. Worth it if it lasts, but do wonder how durable the new material is with those who grind vs clench.

I really don't know that you would gag on this but then again I don't have a strong gag reflex. I do have a tiny child sized mouth though.

I hope you find a wonderful dentist that can help you with a new one that fits properly.

Who does the scan/impression. ☺️

My problem with these is I have a tiny, tiny mouth. I did buy one similar to the one you posted, and it fits horrible, and really it is a choking hazard for me. But really getting 10 years out of my old one makes it just $50 a year so the same price as yours if I purchased a new one every 6 months. I am hoping this one will also last 10 years.

I have a tiny mouth too and very tiny teeth. When my dentist takes an impression they always use the smallest tray and even that's even a little big for me. The Oral B night guard is very small and pretty thin. Much smaller and thinner than the Doctor's brand. (Just mentioning this for other viewers.)

Did your insurance cover it? Mine pays for one every five years. I’m looking forward to the next one after reading this.

This technology is so cool!
I found out on my last visit that my Dentist uses this same thing for crowns. He thought I was going to need one for a cracked tooth and told me all about this new way of making them. They use the same wand and 3d imagining and then the computer literally carves you a new tooth!! So kind of the opposite of 3d printing, but it carves it out of the tooth material. He said you leave your appointment with your new, permanent crown and the fit is beyond amazing compared to the old school way of making them.
I remember my last one they fiddled with it forever to get it to fit and feel right, plus I had to wait weeks with a temporary on that I was paranoid was going to fall off (it was my front tooth). It's unbelievable how far this technology has gone since the last time I got one!

So great to know, LuvAgoodPaddle, they are using this technology for crowns too. I have two crowns, and it was an awful experience. This would be so much better! And you are welcome lucyg!

I hate that it’s expensive (I’m guessing) in case I can’t wear it after all due to my gag reflex. Our dental insurance, which is a good one, only covered one nightguard in a lifetime. Pretty stupid policy if you ask me. BUT my new one was only $175 so very reasonable I feel. My husband got one too. They are also as Patter said, a lot smaller and easy to wear.
