Sam's doesn't sell fresh trees? I would have just gone to the tree lot and asked for a bit of twine. I'm sorry your shopping trip was unsuccessful.

I really don't think it's the stores fault either, BUT if the manager wanted to keep the sale she could have had someone go to the correct aisle and get a package of twine opened it. I've never been to Sams but if they have bungees and Christmas trees (as some of you mentioned above), they probably have twine or some sort of string. I just looked at my local Sams (love online lookup) and they didn't have any twine or rope listed (or bungees). They do have tie downs ($19.95) and some sort of elastic tie downs ($8 for 50) but I could imagine certain customers (not saying the OP would do this) would be infuriated that they be expected to pay for this when Sam's was out of twine. And the manager did try to make it work, but making a chain of zip ties wasn't up to snuff. I do think it was very nice that the two employees stayed with the car.

I would have purchased a package of bungee cords and called it a lesson. I never expect a store to have packing or tiedown materials. (We have been caught off guard without in our car and have actually purchased more than one set of bungee cords because of it.) My husband has a truck and is the king of never having anything delivered. I remember when we first tried to bring something home from a Toys R us store. They wouldn't give us twine because if something had happened on the way home, they could be held responsible, so no string. We learned a lesson and from then on always made sure we were prepared. My husband now keeps an arsenal of string, bungee cords, plastic, and a few flattened cardboard boxes in his truck, just in case.

I just went to Sam's website and you can buy the tree online and have it shipped to you. Maybe they'll be on sale this weekend.

Sorry you had a frustrating experience, but yes, I too carry bungee cords just for times like this, and most things will fit in my vehicle. Bet you'll be ready next time. Just consider it one of those life lessons. We all have them. There have been many times I know I'm right, until I give it some thought and then, yeah, I'm not. Live and learn.

It never occurred to me to go to the automotive department and purchase bungee cords.........I don't think I've ever been in the automotive department at Sam's.

I am confused. If the tree wouldn't fit without being tied in, why didn't you just go home, or somewhere else, buy some twine, and go back? Why the need to return the tree? That just seems silly and like you were trying to be difficult.

I really think that the manager had bigger concerns on the day before Thanksgiving. And I'm sure did not have an employee to spare (especially since TWO of the employees were already out in the parking lot helping OP). She could've sent one of the two. At least then they'd be doing something besides standing around. ![](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

You've got my sympathy.
While, no, Sam's doesn't have to have twine, it seems like it would be a good idea as part of the cost of doing business.
And it doesn't seem too far fetched that they'd ever have twine, as they said that they were out of it, and they'd have to order more. Sounds to me like it usually is part of their business practices.
I would liken it to a restaurant running out of take out boxes. Do they HAVE TO have them as part of giving you a sit down meal service? No. But it is just an accepted cost of business for them.
I don't think it could hurt to email corporate, just relating your experience. It can only help improve service.
And just for the future, grab a few bungy cords from the dollar store & just throw 'em in your trunk, in case you ever need them again.

Another thing I'm wondering. If providing twine to customers is not something they normally do, then why do they have a metal box, mounted on the wall, in the pickup area, with a big blue arrow pointing down to the box with these words...."Twine here".

OP I'm sorry you were frustrated. We aren't always prepared for eventualities and as an experience gets more and more frustrating people tend to not think of the next logical step. Does Sam's even sell Bungee cords? It happens. You tried. I agree with the poster who said just unbox it and put in in pieces by piece. It's how we have gotten a lot of larger items home since we don't own a truck. Boxes that take up a lot of space can fold down nice and flat and fit perfectly. I hope you eventually get a tree. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

1. Since they were out of twine, couldn't they have taken rope out of inventory and expensed it to the store? That would have been my first hope. 2. If they weren't able to do that, I would have bought rope or tie-downs or something from the store to get the thing home. Sounds like returning it was more trouble than doing something like that.

I'm sorry it didn't work out. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) I'm guessing you don't have seats that can go down flat in the car, right? That would be my only guess for how you might be able to make it work in the future.....to put down the back seat and insert it so it's partially in the back seat and partially in the trunk area. I have a Honda Fit, and it lives up to its name, but it can take some interesting combinations of dropped seats and twists and turns to make certain things work. I have brought home a Christmas tree in it before, though mine was a real one. My car smelled so pine fresh for days! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

I have found that I can get most anything in most any car, IF I am willing to load it in piece by piece, out of the original packaging. If I think I might want the box later, I flatten it at the seams and slide it in on top. Just a tip in case it helps next time. I really thought the story was going to be having the guys show up to help, and as you were walking across the parking lot and pointed to your car, they told you there was no way it would fit. But then you made it fit. This is what I was thinking. Maybe it was all in one piece, but if not, take it out of the box, put it in the front seat, back seat and trunk. Fold up the box and let it stick out of the trunk. I recently was able to get a bike into my trunk but I immediately drove over to a store where I ran in and bought some rope. Now I keep the rope in my trunk for situations like this one. I also bought a gas grill for my husband last year and there was no way it was getting into my trunk. A guy with a pickup truck offered to drive it to my house. I said OK, with no other choice and figuring he may drive off with it. I told him I didn't have any money to pay him but he said just pay it forward. So he dropped it at my house and that was just a really nice guy doing a nice thing.

I was with DH at a home store once, he was purchasing something that came in a long box. I stood and watched him try over and over to get that box to fit in HIS trunk. He was just about to give up. So, I calmly walked over, opened the back door, flipped the back seat (of HIS car) down, and, amazingly, that box slid right into that trunk and onto the laid down back seat!! Men. ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Ui47LhQw2NqWVWNNqtfM.jpg) He was not prepared, either. Oops, I missed that this had already been mentioned. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

A friend of mine once bought a toy kitchen set at Toys r Us and couldn't get it into her car. A stranger asked her which direction she lived from the store and it turned out the stranger was going in the same direction and offered to put it in his pickup for her. She offered him something like $10, but he didn't take it. There are definitely nice people out there!

I failed to mention that I asked if I could buy some twine from stock on their shelves.........they didn't have any. I live an hour and a half from the store so there was no way I could have made it back today to pick up the tree because of the distance and because I would have had to borrow a truck. Also, if my story is "that" amusing/interesting/divisive, by all means rename this thread "TreeGate", I don't have a problem with that. Finally, I need to ask, are my paragraphs okay? P.S. I wonder why the manager didn't mention bungee cords to me? Re: the paragraphs It's really easier to read if there are spaces in between the paragraphs since we can't indent paragraphs as you would in normal writing. It's the way the vast majority of posters separate paragraphs in posts on this board.

I would not have ever thought that a big box store would have supplies to tie things down to cars. It sounds like they did everything they could think of at the time to help you. I'm sorry it didn't work out.
I don't own a truck and I have also opened up boxes and taken the items out piece by piece to get them home in my car. Not the most convenient way to do it, but it does work!

Why didn't you open the box and dump the tree pieces in the backseat and trunk? I bet the empty box would have fit then?

I always have a bit of rope in my car for times like this, but honestly, I would have thought Sam's Club would have had twine too. Costco does. And apparently Sam's usually does too, but they had run out. Somebody wasn't doing their job to get it ordered in time to make sure they had some, especially during holiday season. That is a typical customer service, like supplying bags to carry your groceries. What bothered me about the story was the guy leaning on your car and expecting you to go get the twine. That's bad customer service too.
Maybe I've just been spoiled by my Costco. They are always offering to help me to unload my cart into my car if I buy anything heavy, including the boxes of water. They make you feel like a valued customer there. My favorite receipt-checker guy is always really personable. He usually pats your arm and tries to engage you in a brief conversation during that few seconds of basket checking time. It's nice. He's everyone's favorite.
Back to the tree, couldn't you have taken it out of the box and put the stuff in by itself? I've unloaded boxes at Costco in the past to get something to fit. Well, as long as it wasn't something breakable that needed the box to keep it safe. Were you planning on storing the tree in the box? I would have just gone to IKEA and picked up a tree bag to store it and ditched the box.

It is really hard to read posts that are that long with no spacing/paragraphs, etc. And if you're referring to this post, no they aren't. Paragraphs have spaces between them.

Well, I totally agree that it was poor planning on my part but I guess there is the expectation that a store like that would have twine. I really shared this story as much for sympathy as I did to berate Sam's for not having twine. Stuff like that happens to me quite often too. I am not one who is gifted with forethought. I know how frustrating it is. And clearly since Sam's actually normally has twine available for just such as this, it must be a common problem faced by their customers. I would give it a few days and try again. There were two extremely helpful loading guys at Lowes today helping w trees. It was nice.
