Why didn't you think of this yourself? Don't you have any bungee cords in your vehicle? I mean I would think a tree in a box would be pretty big. If I'm driving a sedan the likelihood it's going to fit in the car in any way could be slim. Why is it Sam's fault you didn't plan ahead??

If that were me, I would blame myself not the store.

Sorry that it didn't work out for you. We just got the nine foot tree from Sam's. Took the truck. Those boxes were huge.

I would email corporate with my experience. I can't believe in that whole store there was no twine or cord. See if they have an 800 number and you can call your experience in.

Sorry for your experience. But, I agree that Sam's was not at fault. I wouldn't expect any store to tie a package down....or provide the twine. So I go to Sam's to purchase an artificial Christmas tree................I'm in my car and while I had my doubts as to whether it would fit in the back seat, I crossed my fingers. So I purchase the tree and get to door and ask if there was anyone that could help me load the box, "Sure" was the answer and I hear them call over the intercom for help..........ten minutes later there's no sign of anyone so I ask again.........five minutes later, I ask again.......finally two guys show up and we head out to my car which is on the far side of the parking lot (because the place was so packed). As we are walking out I tell the guy that I doubt the tree will fit in my back seat so we might have to put it in the trunk and tie my trunk down. His reply was, "we can't do that because if the tree were to fall out, we would be libel". Hmmmm, okay........I'll buy that. By this time we've reached my car and sure enough, it won't go in the back seat so I head to the trunk and I say to him, "I know you can't tie it down but would you stand there and tell ME how to tie it down?" He reluctantly says, "Okay, do you have any twine?" "No, I don't have twine, I thought the store had twine for situations like this." "Yes, it's up there in a box by the entrance" and with that he folded his arms and leaned back against my car. Sooooooooooo, by now, I'm getting a little upset but I head back up to the box where the twine is supposed to be kept and guess what....................no twine. I ask another employee standing there if they have any twine and he says, "Let me check" and he gets on the radio and I hear the person responding say "Let me go to receiving". So I tell the guy, I'm going back to get my car and pull it up here while you try to locate the twine. I go back across the parking lot and the first guy is still standing there with his arms crossed leaning up against my car. I tell him about the twine and he says he will meet me at the entrance.. I pull my car up to the loading zone and now both guys are standing there. I hear someone page the second guy and say, "We are out of twine, we'll have to order some." Then he looks at me and says, "I'm sorry M'am". So I said okay, well, then you can put it back on the cart and take it back inside and I'll return it. I get back inside to customer service and naturally the sweet young girl asks me why I'm returning the tree and I proceed to tell her.........I was nice....and she said, "Let me call a manager, surely there is something we can do." So, she calls a manager and I wait another then minutes until this lady shows up and I tell her the whole story. She gets on her radio and thinks she can work magic so I wait another ten minutes and still now twine. Finally, she comes up and she says, "Do you think zip ties will work?" Now, when I think of zip ties, I think of them as at least a foot long so I respond.............."well, they might work." So she goes to get them and returns with a handful of four inch zip ties................I just shook my head and said............."Just refund my money...........I want to go home..............." They did and I did, with no tree. They lost a $200 sale because they didn't a $5 ball of twine................

Well, I totally agree that it was poor planning on my part but I guess there is the expectation that a store like that would have twine. I really shared this story as much for sympathy as I did to berate Sam's for not having twine.

I'm sure you're disappointed that you didn't get your tree but I can't see that it's the store's fault.Seems to me they did what they could to help. You had your doubts that it might not fit in the trunk before you went there, why didn't you take some ties with you?

That was not the store's fault in any way, shape, or form. Your vent should be about lack if planning on your part, not about poor service from the store.

I would have purchased a package of bungee cords and called it a lesson. I never expect a store to have packing or tiedown materials. (We have been caught off guard without in our car and have actually purchased more than one set of bungee cords because of it.)

I bought a toilet at Costco, and they helped me put it into the trunk but could not help me attach my bungee cords to secure the trunk.
All comes down to liability insurance. They are not allowed to touch the customer's car.
And no, I don't think that Sam's or Costco should have twine available.
I have seen the twine at Home Depot and at Ikea and even then, they will not touch your car or help you bundle up your stuff.
Liability is all that it is about.

The service seems a little lacking, but that's not surprising from Sam's Club (in my experience anyway). I much prefer to shop at Costco. As far as the twine, I didn't know stores tie down stuff for people.

Add me to the "not the store's fault" camp. Things run out...if I knew I was purchasing something that won't fit in my car, I plan ahead. You could have made a longer chain of zip ties with the small ones, or deboxed the tree.

I guess I don't get what the problem is? Seems like a frustrating experience for sure, just return back with someone else's car. I read your long post only to discover your "outrage" was their lack of twine. Stores can be out of stock of things you know, it's ok. I think it was nice the guys stayed by your car while you went back inside. Waiting 5-10 minutes for anything to happen is normal. Nothing awful happened to you, just a small annoyance you have to go back. Yes paragraphs next time.

Wait?!!! Could we please make this our new Thanksgiving turkey thread? Nothing personal to the OP, but we really need a new holiday tradition.

I'm on the bench with the other planning people. Your lack of planning does not reflect badly on Sam's.
They do sell tie downs in the auto supply part of the store.

I'm really baffled as to why you didn't just go back in the store and buy some bungee cords or ask them to hold the tree until you could make arrangements to get it home.
you may have had a frustrating experience but I would hardly call it awful.

Yeah Im not really feeling its the stores fault either. Also I probably would have went to buy my own cords/twine after I seen the front of the store didn't have any...I'm impatient like that lol

I'm sorry you had a sucky shopping day. I have never bought or put together a fake tree so I have no idea if they come in pieces or whole or what. So I won't put you down for not having tie down material in your car. Now, someone leaning against my car, that would ruffle my feathers! I hope your day gets better

I really don't think it's the stores fault either, BUT if the manager wanted to keep the sale she could have had someone go to the correct aisle and get a package of twine opened it. I've never been to Sams but if they have bungees and Christmas trees (as some of you mentioned above), they probably have twine or some sort of string.

I was with DH at a home store once, he was purchasing something that came in a long box. I stood and watched him try over and over to get that box to fit in HIS trunk. He was just about to give up. So, I calmly walked over, opened the back door, flipped the back seat (of HIS car) down, and, amazingly, that box slid right into that trunk and onto the laid down back seat!! Men. He was not prepared, either.

I really think that the manager had bigger concerns on the day before Thanksgiving. And I'm sure did not have an employee to spare (especially since TWO of the employees were already out in the parking lot helping OP).

We were at Home Depot yesterday and bought a 10 cu. ft refrig for our garage. They loaded and tied it with twine that they supplied. We didn't ask, they just did it. I would venture to guess that quite a few people run across a deal in a store that they had not planned to buy when they went in. Most don't make it a habit to carry around rope or twine and might need those, along with some help to get it loaded.

Frankly, I'm surprised that those boys were allowed to walk out to your car to help you. When I worked at a big box store, the employees were NOT allowed to go past the front sidewalk adjacent to the store to load things into cars, precisely because of liability issues. You had to bring your car up. Always.

I would never in a million years expect a warehouse club to supply me with twine. That is what I was thinking. I don't go to a warehouse club and expect a lot of service. It is built to display a lot, sell a lot, but not provide a lot of one-on-one service. Even my beloved Ikea lacks in the customer service department. Perhaps you lost out more because you wasted all that time and energy and you are just as treeless now as you were this morning. Sam's losing out on a $200 purchase isn't even a blip on their radar but how much did not being prepared cost you? Consider this a learning experience and throw some tie downs, bungees, or twine in your car. Most of the cars I have owned have had some a sort of false bottom under which the spare tire is kept. There are lots of nooks and crannies to store stuff like this without having them roll all over your trunk.
