Last night I was watching "Real Muders of Atlanta" on Oxygen and was shocked to see it was about my friend's murder.
I posted about this on the old board when it happened, but my church friend, Kasi Peek, was murdered in 2005. An arrest was made quickly and the arrest also lead to the conviction of 2 other murders that happened 11 years earlier.
I was not close friends with Kasi, and knew her only through church and Bible study - we had a Bible study group of about 10 women at the time and Kasi was part of it. I had just saw her 4 days before she was murdered. I found out about her murder on the news the day after it happened. I called our pastor, who hadn't even heard about it. Our associate pastor, who was leading our women's Bible study group, was interviewed by the police at the time, because she had been counseling Kasi, primarily because of issues related to her husband. The local news contacted us and wanted to interview the Bible study group but we declined because we keep personal issues of what we discuss in Bible study private.
As I said, we were not close friends so I didn't know her family and only met them at the funeral. I had no idea her case was going to be profiled on this show. The episode primarily focuses on a double homicide that happened years earlier but near the end, it then focuses on Kasi's murder and how evidence in her case also lead to the conviction in the other cases. It was just kind of surreal seeing this, especially after all these years.
If you would like to see the episode, it is Season 1, Episode 3.

That must have been so eerie- seeing someone you know on the news, and then all these years later again.

I agree with above poster. It's got to be strange seeing something like that.

It always seems surreal to me when real life tragedy somehow becomes entertainment. I'm a bit bothered by true crime shows in that there's a certain degree of exploitation to them. It would make me uncomfortable to learn the actual details shared in many of them about someone I actually know.
I bet it was a very odd experience for you.

Oh, I am sorry. A friend of mine was murdered and the murder became both a true-crime episode and a podcast, and it was really weird to watch the abstract depiction of things I knew well (I knew both him and his wife, whose family prosecutors believe arranged the murder).

A friend of mine from undergrad and marching band was featured on Unsolved Mysteries. She was the second Mary Morris killed, and the case remains unsolved. It is quite shocking to see it on TV. I was watching something on the ID network once and was shocked to hear a familiar name and voice. Dr. Mark Nigrini teaches forensic accounting at my university and is frequently called as an expert witness. I was doing dishes with the show on in the background when I heard Mark's voice discussing a case in which the prosecution had used him as a witness. His office was just down the hall from me at the time, and it just seemed so weird to see him on TV.

That had to have been rather jarring to have unexpectedly find that episode on TV.
Many, many years ago I had a childhood friend that was murdered when she was only 20 years old. I grew up with all three sisters, in fact her older sister was my best friend and maid of honor at my wedding. This was well before the Internet, social media and crime TV. Even with that, the news stories and the information and suppositions they made about her were rather appalling. Of course, the perpetrators tried to make out that she deserved what they did to her. To this day, no one has ever been officially held accountable for her murder. The two guys would not turn against each other and admit who did what. She, along with two male friends, were attacked. My friend along with one of the male friends died. The other male survived and was able to be a material witness at trial and could identify the shooter because he saw it and was shot too. That was the only reason the attackers were ultimately convicted. One was put to death. The other was up for parole a number of years back because he was not the shooter. I also heard a rumor that he supposedly moved back home, has married and has children. I have no idea if that is even true, but I’m sure not gonna go look it up.
I am oddly glad that all of that happened before today’s modern information technology. I have lost touch with all of her family, but I wouldn’t wish a TV show, blog or podcast on any victims family. That would be truly awful.

I was reading an anthology of unsolved crimes many years ago. One of the stories turned out to be about a girl I knew in high school. This poor girl had a serious personal tragedy while still in high school, then a few years later moved to Texas and was abducted from a roadside restaurant and never heard from again. I haven’t been able to find out if that case was ever solved.

Two of my parents’ best friends were murdered by their granddaughter. murderpedia.org/female.H/h/harvey-holly.htm in the third section, Holly’s mother says she feels no responsibility for her daughter’s actions. The Colliers left both of them live in their home, but Holly would frequently move out when she was mad with them. She would ask her parents to babysit, often disappearing for days. When she would return and find Holly had a small bruise from riding her bike or falling down while she was learning to walk she’d call DFACS on her parents. The allegations were unfounded, but she continued to make calls. When on drugs or drinking, Carla was mean. She taught her daughter to hate the Colliers. They both took advantage of the love the Colliers had for them and are both responsible for their death.

I just watched the episode. I’m so sorry it took the death of your friend to finally convict this guy.

I just watched the episode. I’m so sorry it took the death of your friend to finally convict this guy. Thank you - if they had been able to convict him on the first 2 murders, then she would have never met him and would (most likely) still be with us today. At least he will never be able to hurt any one else
