I've been looking at stand mixers. I have a couple of recipes that would be easier to make if I had one but I am not intending on doing a lot of baking or bread making. I know that Kitchen Aid is the gold standard of stand mixers, however, I don't want to spend that kind of money on one and frankly, don't think I need one. I could keep using my hand mixer (which works just fine for what I do) but a stand mixer would be kind of nice. So if you something besides a Kitchen Aid I'd really like to hear your thoughts on what you have. Thanks!

Aldi periodically sells one - I have an ancient Oster so haven't picked it up but I've been happy with my other Aldi small appliances. It won't be Kitchenaid quality but it should be fine for what you're describing and if you find that you love it and use it a ton, then save up for a KA

For years I've heard people recommend Hamilton Beach as an alternative. So you may want to look into that. Also, if you don't get enough suggestions here, maybe try Googling: alternative to Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer and see what comes up.
Just a FYI, I've had my KA for over 20 years (plain boring white). I don't use it often either, especially since the kid grew up, and then a few years later I became single. That said, I like that it will more than likely last me until the day I die. So for me (even though it was a gift), it's worth the initial outlay of $$$.

Before I had my KA, I had a hand-me-down Hamilton Beach stand mixer that I used. It worked well, and I used it for many years before finally replacing it when the KA I wanted went on sale at my Costco a few years ago. The HB was still working fine when I passed it along to a sibling who loves all things vintage. (The HB was quite old already when I got it.) I wanted something with a stronger motor and more speed options.

Before my KA, I had an Oster stand mixer that worked great. The only reason I got rid of it was because I lifted the arm too hard & fast and it broke.

Kitchen Aid is going to be the best bet for the best price.
Lower priced stand mixers are just not great.
There are mixers that are a lot nicer than a Kitchen Aid, but for the price - KA is the winner. Maybe you can find a used one for a bit less $$. I would call Bosch the gold standard as the best mixer - but they are a lot more pricy!

DH bought me a new KA hand mixer and it doesn't hold a candle to the strength and durability of the older hand mixers.

I would also recommend rethinking the KA. I got mine as a wedding gift in 1990. It's still going strong.

I got a Sunbeam stand mixer from my mom for a wedding gift 20+ years ago. It was great until I tried to make homemade marshmallows. I was able to get a KA for a great black friday price, or I probably would have gotten another Sunbeam.

If you keep an eye on it you can often find good sales on KA mixers and if you can wait closer to Christmas there are a lot of deals. Last year I bought my daughter a 5 quart KA for $225 at Macy's. I sometimes see KA mixers listed on FB Marketplace. My sister bought a barely used one for $50 at a garage sale a few years ago. I have a KA at my cabin and another at home. If either of them broke, I would replace them with another KA.

Not sure what your budget it but I bought mine in December from Kitchenaid, they had a sale and coupon for email subscribing - paid $198 total. Its the professional 5 quart one.
