Do you listen to the various Radiothons (usually Children's Hospitals or St. Jude's type places)?
I tend to not listen to them too much. I don't want to hear a story on my way to work and be sobbing before I can get to my desk.
I have donated a little on/off for years..
I admit I kinda groan when they start.. so today and tomorrow for 12 hours straight each day.. They do raise money for good places so I get that they do these.. it does a great job. I am glad they do them, just my selfish side misses my routine.

I no longer listen to FM radio. But when I did I didn't listen to those or if I did, only a few minutes. Because yes, I don't need to be ugly crying on my way to work/errands etc! Especially when driving and unable to blow my nose that is now all stuffed up and giving me a headache due to crying.

I don't think those are really a thing in my area. One station does do one for a children's hospital once a year, and no I don't listen, I turn the radio on for music not to be guilt tripped into donating.

I listen to FM radio. I have never in my life come across a radiothon. It must not be a national thing.

I listen to FM all day at work. The 2 stations I switch between don't do the radiothons. But, a sister station does once or twice a year, but it's not all day. They still play music, and just have snips of the radiothon during the day, so it's not too much. It's usually for about a week.

Never heard of such a thing. There used to be ones on tv when I was growing up. In the big city, not local to me.

Dang.. I thought all stations do this... I can't remember a time wherever I lived that they didn't do this in some sort of fashion. Weird. I know 3 of my stations do this at different times of the year.
It's usually set up live in a hospital and they have past patients come in and tell their stories. (some are live and some are recorded)
Different big contributors come in for air time for their business and present a check (usually there are in great big amounts)
During COVID, it's all been done differently.. It's not done at the hospital and done from the radio station. Everything is recorded (the stories from the families/kids).
There is music played in between stories and talking..
I think last year this radio station raised over 1.2 million dollars.. It's a big deal.

I listen to a university-funded, non-profit radio station on my commute. They hold radio-thons both for their own station's funding and for a "sponsor a child" program on a regular basis.
While I don't begrudge their need to ask for funding, it drives me crazy when, during these sessions, they don't have their regularly scheduled traffic, news, and weather reports. Those reports are so much a part of my commute and I can gauge my progress based on when I hear Becky's news or David's traffic update!

I change the station if there is a radiothon going on. I don’t know the timing for them, so o can’t say how many of them we have a year.

I don't pay that close attention to them.. but it does seem like the various stations have them pretty close together in a few months time. So I feel like I get hit three or so times.. oh well.. it's good for the hospital.. I was just pondering what other people do.. I wonder if their listening numbers go down when this goes on.. Things I wonder about on my early bird morning drive.. lol

I listen to FM radio. I have never in my life come across a radiothon. It must not be a national thing. Me either.
But when we got our van and got sirius xm radio, I stopped listening to regular radio. They are always having commercials, and that's about it. I don't miss it at all, even though I no longer know what songs are popular!

No, that would drive me crazy. I have Sirius XM and listen to both music and comedy.

The hospital I work at has it every year. It starts tomorrow. They generally do it live at the hospital and its fun to wander over and watch it for a while. I don't listen to it on the radio while I'm at work. Due to Covid they do it at the studio so not as star studded as it used to be. One year with the money raised our hospital was able to purchase an MRI machine on tracks that could be moved to surgery so the MRI could be done during surgeries instead of after. Saved a lot of time and guess work and follow up surgeries. Our kiddos love to be picked as the ambassadors. Our hospital was the model many hospitals used to do their own radio thons.

My NPR station has fund drives but I don't think I've ever heard a radiothon. Same here. I usually listen to something else during the week they are having the fund drive. I get that they have to raise money, but I get really tired of hearing “Bob V. just gave $25 and challenges everyone who likes to bowl to do the same.”

I do! Is this a Virginia thing? The one(s) here are in Colorado... and I am assuming Missouri has them too because although I have been in Colorado for 20 years, it wasn't new to me.. so they must have done them in other states that I have lived in...Missouri being the last state I was in.
