Watched 4 episodes last night. I read the original New Yorker story, which was fascinating. I am a big fan of Julia Garner, and I think she is perfectly cast. That is one weird accent she has. When I first heard it, I was ?, but I read something that said she nailed it.
That being said, I’m finding the pacing to be slow, and the journalist annoying for some reason.

I totally agree. The journalist is super unlikable

Didn't know it came out yet, thanks for the reminder. I remember reading the real life story and was fascinated.
Just finished watching The Tinder Swindler on Netflix, which kind of have some similarities to the Inventing Anna story. Wow, the Tinder Swindler is something all right. How he conned those women out of millions is crazy! Red flags everywhere though.

I may have to watch that! I am always looking for new shows as I don't like much on regular tv. I am watching Working Moms and really like it!

I just started watching it today. I saw another show about her, and I was fascinated. I am really looking forward to this show. And of course, I love Julia Garner. <3

I am watching it now. I'm on episode 4. I'm not quite sure what to think of it all yet. I googled Anna to see where she is now and she is apparently locked up by ICE and awaiting extradition back to Germany. She is trying to fight it saying her family has received death threats for bringing disgrace to the country and she is afraid to return.
I saw the Tinder Swindler a few nights ago and that show left me really angry. That guy needs to be locked up. At least the dating apps are supposedly banning him. I felt so badly for all of the people he scammed. One of my favorite parts of that show was all of the messages he left the one friend who was selling his clothing. He kept going from threatening and hostile to begging to "I love you" and then repeating it all again. That was fun.

Just finished it. I didn't care for the portrayal of the journalist or Anna's weird accent either.
I have to say it was a total transformation for Julia Garner. I did not recognize her at all.
Overall, I thought it was interesting since it was true, but it could have been a lot shorter.

I watched the first episode the acting is over the top, the reporter’s expressions seem so fake to me I don’t think I will watch the rest. Julia’s accent is awful. I love her in Ozark though.

I finished it last night and I really had a problem with the episodes with the trial. Bottom line is Anna was a con artist and lied and stole. So just because you lie and steal to multi-billion dollar institutions doesn't make your actions any more honorable.
I had heard about the Robin Hood concept in the story, but I totally disagree with that premise. She was in no way heroic. She was not only a criminal, she was not a particularly sympathetic or compelling person--she was unkind and superficial and manipulative.
I don't even understand what was going on with Vivian and Todd in the story. I didn't understand their sympathy; their actions didn't make sense.
Vivian was acting like some super-spy looking for clues and speculating about Anna's history, going so far as to travel to Germany to talk to people about Anna, and showing no journalistic objectivity.
And Todd leaving his wife to start off on vacation without him. WTF?
Ten minutes with Anna's parents made me more sympathetic to them, than the entire series did with Anna.
The whole Morocco thing. Didn't understand the point of the Kacy food poisoning story line. It seemed to be significant...and then it wasn't.
I don't understand how Rachel became the bad guy for Neff and Kacy for "selling out" Anna, as if this was worse than what Anna did.
Maybe Rachel did enjoy all the ill-gotten perks from Anna, but when faced between going to a Moroccan jail, and using her plastic to bail everyone out of a pickle, I think I'd have done exactly the same thing. I mean, what other option did they have?
Maybe everyone who got scammed, did so because they had no moral compass.
So, I enjoyed the beginning, but overall the series was too long, and then became entirely preposterous.

I love these kinds of stories. Based on true, but bizarre stories.
Anna Chlumsky seems to only be able to play one role. It's like she has the same personality in this show and Veep. But I have a soft spot for her for being Vada Sultenfuss...
I think Julia Garner is doing a really good job at being Anna. I am European, and I've met a lot of people with mixed accents. Anna's accents is apparantly spot on, and if that's true I can definitely hear the German and Russian, but also the striving to sound educated and posh. She doesn't try to sound American, she tries to sound upper class when she speaks English. If that makes sense.
I have one episode left. What stands out to me is the free-flowing of money between the rich in New York. And how casual things are if people think you are rich too. I mean, she was introduced to a guy who owns a company of private jets, and she could call in a favor from him on a text a few days later? If that was a non-rich person asking for a favor, that would not end up with them on a private jet with friends flying out of state. Their lives are different than mine, that's for sure!
And my favourite part was when she turned down the Fyre Festival guy. Because he operated 'too small'. Yes. Yes, he did.

I've tried to watch it and fallen asleep two nights in a row. Too much perky journalist, not enough Anna. I read the New Yorker article and it seems like they're trying to stretch the story too thinly. I had high hopes for this. I hope it gets better.

I watched the 2nd episode yesterday. I'm disappointed and won't be watching the rest. I wonder if the story would have been better served by a docuseries or documentary format. It's a little too soap opera-y for me. Just not my favorite style of TV show.

I’ve watched 4 episodes and can’t wait to watch the rest. Once I got into the second episode I was loving every minute.
The journalist grows on me each episode.
Julia Garner’s portrayal of Anna is amazing. That “something” she does to her voice is spot-on in trying to sound like the real Anna. How she controls almost everyone around her is shocking.
Looking forward to watching the remaining 5 episodes.

I’m not sure how else they could have gone. Those things really happened…
The food poisoning was significant because it saved Kacy from being involved in the financial shit storm that came next.

I am enjoying it. I am astounded at how the money and favors flowed back/forth!
