In the past year or so, I've noticed some companies are now offering embossing folders, whereas before they didn't. (The main two I can think of are Simon Says Stamp and Altenew.) All these embossing folders are the newer 3D style, where you get much more dramatic embossing. I have some 3D embossing folders and they are great, but I really love a regular/traditional folder for the more subtle look it provides, but based on the popularity of the 3D style, I wondered if I'm the only one who still prefers the older style, so I thought I'd poll the Peas on their opinions. It's always interesting to hear what other people like to use!

Similarly, I've noticed scrapbook companies no longer include embossing folders in collections. I exclusively scrapbook (in a simple, clean, linear, minimalist style) & prefer traditional embossing folders for a subtle (& often only) nod to the theme.

I like both, but the 3D are a bit harder to get through the die cut machine, and some card stock works better than others. I have to make adjustments when doing 3D, but I don’t do it often enough to remember my sandwich, and I usually have to figure it out all over again, which is annoying. The look is beautiful, but sometimes I want minimal embossing, so I use regular folders, and sometimes I want the deeper impression which the 3D gives.

I especially like the 3d type for folders that emboss a focal image - big flowers, bouquets etc. For those images, the 3D makes them look really WOW, but for backgrounds it doesn't really matter much to me.

I checked off both. Most of my folders are the regular style.
I have to remember to do a little prep for a 3D folder: change the sandwich in my machine, choose smooth cs—not too heavy weight—and mist the cs so it bends more readily. I am only willing to do all this if the result I want is really important. For simple backing, the regular folders are just fine.

I recently watched this video that shows how much water one crafter adds to her paper before embossing - lots of other crafters I follow had commented that they changed their method after watching it. It seems to make a big difference if you do want that deep embossed look.

You have always been a part of the heist. You're only mad now because you don't like your cut.

I didn’t even know what these were until two days ago. I ordered my first one yesterday. I was never one to use embossing folders consistently. I like them, I have quite a few but forget to use them.

I like 3D when it is intended to be the star of the show, and regular when it is just a supporting role. That said, I don't really buy embossing folders anymore, so I only have a few 3D.

It depends on whether I want the folder to be the star or a supporting cast member. Before getting a Gemini I used a Cuttlebug, and just jotted the sandwich on a sticky note and put it in the folder, which was turned upside down and held a sample piece and the note. Someone - can't remember who - lightly sponges each side of the cardstock for 3D folders instead of misting. It might be more uniform. ETA I didn't read FurryP's comment before posting!
