I’ve been buying (sugar free) gum recently in an attempt to stop eating sweets and chocolate. However, it feels as though all the flavour has gone within five minutes, and I need to replace it. I’m sure gum lasted a lot longer than that when I was a child.

I am of the opinion that no one should chew gum in public. It’s gross and makes you look like a cow. No one wants to see it.
I only chew gum in my car to freshen my breath or get rid of a taste in my mouth. I spit it out as soon as it loses its flavor.

I haven’t chewed gum in years. One of my biggest pet peeves used to be when I would be on Bart and there would be some dude near me loudly chewing gum. So gross lol.

Once it loses its flavor I spit it out. I haven’t chewed gum in a long time, I prefer mints.

Not a gum fan. But if I do chew, it’s only for a few minutes til the flavor is gone. Plus I inevitably bite the inside of my cheek if I chew for any length of time!

I don’t like to chew gum because it causes me to have gas buildup, not good with my GERD. If I have to chew, it is only for a couple of minutes to get the flavor and help freshen my breath.

I almost never have gum, I can go for years without having it. But when I do, because DH’s smells good or it’s my only option for refreshing my mouth, maybe 5 minutes before I’m over it.

I was one of the few kids I knew who almost never chewed gum. My father hated it and discouraged it. I only got gum on communion Sundays when I would sit with my grandmother while my parents took communion. She would give me a piece. Then I got braces really young and no gum was allowed. Then I got older and got TMJ and no gum allowed so it is a good thing I never developed the habit.

My kids were only allowed to chew it when my husband let them if I was out of town. Can't stand the smell, the sound (omg, popping and cracking? Is there any worse sound?) Bleck. Every aspect.

I am the repulsive one...but I do agree with people who smack and pop their gum is annoying!
I have gum in my mouth usually every afternoon after I eat lunch. I sit at my desk, I don't smack. Basically the gum is just rolled around in my mouth and chewed every so often. If I have to talk to someone, it goes under my tongue. If I am going into a meeting, I spit it out.
I chew mint gum, half a stick of the Orbit sticks. So very small. Flavor stays a long time.
Sorry, not sorry.

Even reading about chewing gum is making me nauseous. I shouldn’t have opened the thread.

I can't chew gum because I bite the inside of my cheek too. And once it happens, I continue to bit it for days. I actually have to eat only soft foods for a day for it to heal before I can eat regular foods again. So no gum, it's not worth it.

Nah, I remember chewing gum when I was a child in the 70s, and I was always disappointed that my Juicy Fruit chewy didn't hold its flavour for more than a few minutes! I don't usually chew a lot of gum, but I am trying to reduce the amount of chocolate and lollies and sweet stuff that I eat, so when I feel the urge for something sweet I will have some gum. I work from home, and nobody else is here during the day, so I'm not bothering anyone. I like the container of Extra White Spearmint Sugar Free gum - "Chew for a Brighter Smile!". They are big pillows of gum, and really satisfying to bite into. But yeah, I usually spit it out within 5-10 minutes.

When you work about 12 inches from small people's faces, you learn how to chew fast and get that lunch smell out your mouth. I almost always spit it out before I get back to work after lunch, but I hate the smell of coffee and wish people would chew gum/mints more often.

Clearly I'm in the minority but I love gum. I certainly try and be respectful when chewing it though. I only chew it until the flavour is gone and then it makes me gag.

I'm not much of a gum chewer, but I do sometimes use it to get rid of an aftertaste in my mouth. I know mints exist for that reason, but some mints leave an aftertaste that I don't like, as it turns out. So I chew the gum just a little bit, sometimes even stopping before the flavor is gun, but definitely not continuing to chew it after the flavor is no longer there.

I am very fidgety and chew the inside of my cheeks or side of my tongue so I always have gum in my mouth as an alternative. Don't really chew it, just kind of move it around and doubt you would even know I have gum in my mouth. I replace it with a fresh piece about every 30-60 minutes. Always chew Eclipse gum, flavor does last.

I love Orbit Sweet Mint gum. I usually chew it for 30-45 minutes and only after I have eaten.

I don’t chew gum a lot because before I know what has happened I end up swallowing it.

I almost always chew gum when I’m driving. Always Trident Peppermint. I’ve read that peppermint makes a person feel more alert, and I think that’s true. I stick two pieces in my mouth (because they’re small sticks) when I get in the car, drive 20 minutes to a neighboring town where my chiropractor is, maybe get that and one errand done and by then the flavor is gone. It’s usually in the trash at the closest opportunity after that, so maybe 30-40 minutes max.
I also don’t obnoxiously chomp on it, smack it or blow bubbles. Plus I wear a mask everywhere in public anyway these days, so it’s less obvious that I’m even doing it. If other people are annoyed by my gum chewing they can look away or walk away, just like I do when they’re wearing clothes that show their butt crack or too much cleavage, talking loudly on their cell phones in public places, playing games or watching videos on their phones with a stupid loud volume, or any one of many obnoxious things that I regularly encounter people doing in public. I think in the grand scheme of things, it’s the lesser of many evils. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I can't help hearing in my head a song my dad taught me: "does chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight?"

I think in the grand scheme of things, it’s the lesser of many evils. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I can only speak for myself, but the sound and movement of people chewing gum is a much bigger annoyance to me than pretty much anything else. I do try to move if someone sits within ear and eye shot of me and they are chewing gum, but it's not always possible. And for the love of all things...why does the person who is chomping and popping their gum always seem to follow me in the store?? I have gotten better as I have gotten older, but if I have to be around someone who is chewing gum for any period of time, sometimes I get really agitated and think very negative thoughts. It is very difficult to stop focusing on it.

Haha didn’t realize people had a strong opinion about gum! I used to chew it quite a bit as a kid and growing up. Now, I chew it for about 20 min and I like the extra kind. It’s thin enough that you can hide it under your tongue when talking and not looking like a cow chewing grass lol. I do chew it very small and inconspicuous so hopefully I don’t look like a cow!

lesley, I had a spell of doing the same - chewing gum at home to curb the urge for sugary snacks but it didn't taste nice for long at all unfortunately.

But I go thru phases. I like mint gum, but I also have a thing for the new fruit-flavored gums that are out there- fruit punch, watermelon, orange/tangerine, lemonade, etc. I don't chew it for too long, though- it hurts my jaw once it starts to get 'stiff' and loses its flavor. (I used to chew bubble gum- a LOT of it, and BIG pieces- but since I had braces it hurts my jaw now. And I *am* one of those people who snap their gum, too... but I don't even realize I'm doing it. truly, I don't.)

I rarely chew gum, and only to freshen my breath. I usually go no longer than 5 minutes. Once the flavor is gone, I'm done. I don't think gum taste lasted longer when we were kids.
My DH is so funny with gum. He CANNOT not swallow it! I think the longest he's ever chewed a piece is about a minute. Usually it's 15 seconds tops and it's gone. Weird, huh?
