I can't believe it was over 5 years ago that Sherri disappeared while jogging near her Redding home in Nov 2016. She reappeared 3 weeks later with a story of being kidnapped, abused, hair cut off, branded and let go at the side of the road north of Sacramento. She was with a former boyfriend in Orange County and charged today. Sacramento Bee story

She sounds like a prize. I wonder why so long to file charges? But I’m glad they did. I also know someone like this. Maybe not to this level, but about 80%.

I've been waiting for the truth about this case to come out. It was such a strange story that it just wasn't believable. Thanks for posting.

She had male DNA on her clothing when she reappear from the original event. They continually checked it in the database and they finally got a hit on it in 2020, leading to her ex boyfriend. Wow. I remember so many people doubting her story at the time and I felt sorry for her because of it. I didn't think anyone would do something like had been done to her to themselves. I guess she has been pulling this stuff since she was a teen. Her poor mother having to call the police for assistance because she was hurting herself and blaming it on her mother. The mom wanted to know what to do about it. This woman has some serious mental health issues and needs some major help.

I do remember the story and how there were doubts about its veracity. She really must have issues.

I get the delay from 2016 until 2020 when they got wind of a possible DNA match, but nothing in the article explains the delay from when the police confronted her with their evidence in August 2020 until now. I remember the thread here. Five years? Yikes. That’s like nine years in pandemic years.

Wow! I followed this case at websleuths when it happened. We all knew she had faked it but had pretty much given up on her ever being caught.

Ha. Color me not at all surprised that I posted about the evils of true crime crowdsourcing on one of those threads. I thought people should leave this woman and her family alone and let the police do their jobs - without parsing and second guessing every last detail. I guess the police did their job. Sow and steady wins the race. (But I AM curious about why soooo slow. And I wonder if the husband stayed with her after learning about the evidence.)

It's interesting though that the majority thought that there was something not tight with her story.

It looks like she is facing a possible fine of $500,000 and 25 years in jail. She would get a $250,000 fine and 5 years for lying to Federal investigators and another $250,000 fine and 20 years in prison for mail fraud, assuming she is convicted of both. AmeliaBloomer, the delay in bring about charges could be due to the pandemic but I would guess it was because they were taking their time to build a rock solid case against her now that they know more about where she was and what the ex-boyfriend had to tell them. They needed to locate him and interview him. Then all that he had to tell them needed to be verified. They don't want her to get away with any of the charges due to lack of preparation on their part.

Waste of valuable law enforcement resources. "She also was reimbursed more than $30,000 by the California Victim’s Compensation Board based on the false story, the charges said. They included money for visits to her therapist for “treatment for anxiety and PTSD," according to a court filing, and for the ambulance ride to the hospital after she surfaced near Sacramento."

I remember the case, but totally lost track after she was reunited with her family.
I’m glad they waited to make a case against her. There’s less of a chance her lawyers can get everything dismissed on technicalities.

I do remember the story and how there were doubts about its veracity. She really must have issues. I also remember how people doubted her, and I thought they were crazy considering her physical condition. It angers me that she wasted so much in resources, nevermind what she put her family through.

Not only did she waste law enforcement resources and take money from the victim’s compensation fund, but she also falsely claimed two Hispanic women abducted her. It seems like the white women who make up these crimes always dream up perpetrators who are non-white. (Susan Smith, who drowned her own children and Jennifer Wilbanks, the runaway bride come to mind).

I also remember this case and I am so glad that the truth has been uncovered. The amount of money and manpower that went into finding her was huge. I feel sorry for her husband, kids and mother. I hope they throw the book at her. I wonder if her DH will have to pay her fines or if he is going to divorce so that he doesn’t loose everything?

I sort-of believed her back them, purely because I thought- if anyone was going to make something like this up, they wouldn’t go so crazy on the details😩
How awful for those close to her. I know how it feels for someone to perpetuate a long manipulative lie against you and it makes you feel so stupid when you finally learn the truth!

Just finished reading the article. Sounds like they found the ex-boyfriend using familial DNA, like they did with the Golden State Rapist. That might be why it took so long?
Her story never sounded right. Pisses me off that she got $ from Go Fund Me, to pay off her credit card bills.🤬I hope she goes to jail for a long time. All those resources wasted on her! And, how could you do that to your family?!? She deserves to rot in jail.

To summarize: blonde haired, blue eyed super mom, kidnapped and branded by scary hispanics, was forced to listen to annoying Mexican music and fed tortillas and apples.
So glad this ridiculous liar was finally found out.

I remember it and I couldn’t decide if she was lying or not. It’s hard to speculate about that. I didn’t really want to discuss it much because I don’t want to debate like that about victims.
I’m glad law enforcement has followed thru and figured it out. She should have whatever penalties they can throw at her.

I agree. I’m glad they took their time and built a solid case.
I remember at the time, thinking that this was a hoax, especially after reading the posts that this wasn’t the first time she was abducted or disappeared and her extreme hate issues with Latinos.
I’ll tellya that dh of hers is some kinda rube to hang in with all this drama. Remember how he kept referring to her signature long blonde hair 😂 like she’s some kind of local celebrity lol
Whatever, glad they got her
