I am pretty new to Netflix, but heard that Ozark was good. I tried to watch an episode yesterday, but it was so dark.
I don't mean dark as in subject matter, I mean dark as the "screen" (I can't think of how to explain this better.). It's like I look at the screen and it's hard to make out people and shapes. It's like they are filming in a room with no lights. I can't even see what's going on or the characters. Has anyone else noticed it with this show? I don't know if it's my tv or the show. I had to read the recap of the first episode because it was hard to tell what was going on.
I have only watched a few shows on Netflix and didn't have that problem.

I thought you were talking about dark subject matter at first, lol. No, I have not experienced what you describe. Now the subject is quite dark but that is part of why we all love it.

I know what you mean. DH watched it on and off when the older seasons were new but he’d watch it when I was getting our kid to bed so I missed a lot of it. After this last season came out, he restarted watching from the beginning so I was able to watch more of the show and there do seem to be a lot of scenes that are really poorly lit making it more difficult to follow what’s going on.

I will edit the original post to avoid confusion. It must be my tv! Actually it's the same on all tvs in our house, so maybe the cable?

Yes, poorly lit! I could not think of how to describe it but that is exactly what it is on my tv. I guess I will skip this show because I really need to see the characters to tell who is who, haha! It's very popular, so I may read the episode recaps to see what the shows are about and skip the show itself.

I haven't watched the new episodes yet, I feel like I have to backtrack to refresh my memory, 8ts been so long.
To your point though, yes I agree. I remember when I first started watching, it seemed to me like you actually had to work at it to see what was going on. Then it seemed to get better, or I just got used to it.
We'll see whenever I get around to watch again.

A lot of scenes are dark like that but I don't recall them being so dark you can't make them out.
The show is so good. It is filmed local, so it's fun to try and find things we recognize.

I think the dark ness and blue tint is what makes the show even better. I love the ambience.

I often say something like “I couldn’t live the their house, it’s so poorly lit” lol! But I do think it’s intentional to the underlying darkness of the story. It’s never so dark we can’t make out characters though.

I got a new TV in December. I started watching the show in February. I thought something was wrong with my TV because it was so dark. It is such a good show though. I suffer through because I can't wait to see what Darlene, Agent Petty and Cade are up to next.

Yes it’s dark and tinted blue green. It’s something I got used to.

The lighting on Ozark doesn't bother me. Trust me when I tell you that the storylines make it worth it. Really good show. As much as I enjoyed Goliath, the darkness was hard to watch.

Yes, it adds a lot to the ambience, without even noticing it. The show is excellent. OP - could you adjust the brightness on your tv for this show ?

I have trouble with the darkness and tinting on a lot of shows but oddly enough Ozark's never bothered me. I understand the need for ambiance and mood but sometimes I wonder what the producers are thinking when something suspenseful is going on and my screen is just black.

I’ll agree with the OP. Season one was so poorly lit, we only watched it at night with all the lights off. Even then, we’d hear someone talking and ask each other “who is that talking?” It was THAT dark. It seems to not be quite so bad after season 1 though.

Yes...my friends and I are always talking about how dark it is in subject matter (yes) but in lighting!! It is filmed in low light, it seems and sometimes seems like it has a blue green filter. I almost always have a light on while watching TV because I knit/crochet/cross stitch while watching TV but I have learned with Ozark, it is easier to watch if all the lights in the room are off. If the room is dark, it is somehow easier to see the show. Side note: Many of the scenes were filmed within walking distance of my house. Our courthouse serves as the police station on the show.

I think the dark ness and blue tint is what makes the show even better. I love the ambience. My vision is pretty bad, so that makes it really hard for me to see what's going on. But even in everyday life, I need a lot of light! We have so many recessed lights and added windows, so I am pretty picky about light to begin with.

I remember a previous thread about the poor lighting on this show. You aren’t the only one!

I think I may read the recap, then put it on while I clean. That way I can listen, but if I can't look at the screen, no big deal (because I can't see much anyways, haha!).

I don't touch the tv, because I worry I won't be able to get it back to how it was. But that would help! Maybe I should try to watch it in the dark and see if that helps.

I thought maybe it was lower budget and that's why the lighting was bad.

Ozark was very dark when I did watch it. It was part of the reason I didn't mind never going back to it. lol That, and the 'dark' subject matter. It just wasn't enjoyable to me.

That's so neat! Where is it filmed? The "police station scenes" are filmed in Doraville, GA, as well as the scenes where they meet in a large abandoned parking lot (which is an old General Motors plant, now closed) The house is in Flowery Branch, GA (about 35 min north of Atlanta) on Lake Alltoona. \ The strip club, Lickety Splitz, was filmed about 15 minutes from my house (converted from an old Motel 6) The Blue Cat is an old resturant in Calhoun, GA (close to Flowery Branch) The Lazy O is an old Americans Best Value Inn hotel in Conyers, GA (about 30 minutes east of Atlanta) The Missouri Belle casino scenes are filmed at Stone Mountain Park, GA There are lots of other smaller scenes filmed close by at some restaurants and such.

The lighting is definitely intentional and a quick google search will bring up a number of articles written about it when the show first came out. Watching in a darker room is easier on your eyes for sure. How fun to see your local spots as locations in the show.

Yes it is darkly lit, which I think is intentional to emphasize the dark storylines.
