I have a rubber mat outside, under the porch roof. I have a cheap Walmart rug inside on top of laminate flooring.

People with mats outside - are they under a roof/under cover? I’m thinking that an outside mat would be super wet and muddy very quickly here and wouldn’t be any use for wiping off your shoes before stepping in the house at all. We have a roof overhang on our front entry. The mat stays mostly dry (unless we get one of those sideways rains.) I like having both an outdoor and indoor mat. Having a large dog trained me well.

We have a large coir mat outside and it’s not under anything but the roof overhang. We’re in a mid century modern style home so it’s not conducive to a porch. The mat does get rained on but due to the depth of it doesn’t stay really wet. It does serve to ‘brush off’ the dirt and all to help keep that out if the house. Our front door is the main entryway for us all.

Some grey rug I picked up at the home store ( and shoes )
It’s not pretty or anything it was cheap & absorbent.

A barking dog.
Unless she knows you, then she is just quietly waiting to wag her tail when the door finally opens.

It’s standard here for front doors to have cover. Like you step up onto a covered porch and then come to the door. It’s very, very rare for a front door to not be covered.

We have an LLBean waterhog mat outside of the front door (which is a covered porch) and one inside the front door on our ceramic tile floor. I love these mats. We've had them for years and have replaced them when they've gotten too old. They last for years and do an exceptional job soaking up wet footprints.

Our front door opens outwards and is flush with the porch step so we can’t have an outside mat. We have two dogs and we use the front door to go in and out. We have a large, ugly, dark grey mat designed to trap dirt inside the front door. My pretty multicoloured Moroccan runner is further up the hallway.

We have something like this mat outside the front door and a 6X4 rug inside the double door. Only one side is unlocked to open and a shoe basket sits on the locked side.

We have a doormat outside the door made out of recycled car tyres, for getting the worst off. Inside we have a recessed area for a big coir mat.

A nice entry rug. It isn't the door that we use a family, we all come in through the garage door. So it is just guests really that use the front door.

We have nothing on the inside of the front door, just a door mat outside. Back by the back door, we just have a regular small area rug, with an outdoor door mat outside.

A rubber bottom utility mat. It’s not attractive but highly effective. This is our only entrance to our home, no mudroom or garage entrance. I don’t know if anyone who doesn’t have some sort of rug or utility mat inside their front door.
The seasons of Minnesota are (current) snow/slush/rain/ice from January to March or April. Then mud and tree sap. Then green stuff from our huge maple out front and assorted pollen. All summer it’s whatever the kids drag in from their bare feet. Then fall hits and it’s constant collection of pulverized leaves. Then repeat the snow/sleet/rain/ice.

Hardwood floors and I always keep a decorative door mat there to catch "some" dirt from shoes as they come in, before they are taken off.

I just had the floors refinished, and my ratty old LL Bean waterhog mats took a trip to the dump. I don't especially need the waterhog mats now, because they were mainly for our late (very muddy) dog. Right now, pee pads for my old dog. We have the front entry way gated because we don't use a kennel. I have it covered with pee pads so if my dog has an accident the floor is protected. Use to have a nice rug.
