“It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes. The family requests privacy at this time," his son told Deadline.
Hurt had multiple Oscar nominations to his name, including Best Actor for "Children Of A Lesser God", "Broadcast News", and "Kiss Of The Spider Woman", for which he won.
Hurt got his start at the famed performing arts conservatory Juilliard School. He featured in a number of stage productions before his first film role in 1980's "Altered States". His role as the scientist would earn him a Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year.
Other notable roles were in "Gorky Park" and "Body Heat".
Marvel Fans will recognize Hurt as Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross in numerous films, including "Black Widow", "Captain America", and the "Avengers" films.

I just saw this and I just watched him in Black Widow this afternoon. He was one of my favorite actors. What a loss...

I thought he was younger than 72. But that still seems much too young to pass away from natural causes. Heck, I'm in my late 60s myself!

Wow. I didn't think he was in his 70s yet.
He was a great actor. The movie version of The Accidental Tourist did not work for me at all (loved the book), but he was terrific in it. And I saw him in The Doctor which I loved.
Wasn't he also in The Big Chill?

Such sad news. He was such a big part of my movie watching youth. For a period of time, it seemed as though he was in just about everything.

I'm so saddened by this. When I was in high school, my mom and I went to see a movie called "Eyewitness" and I fell absolutely in love with him. The walls of my bedroom were lined with pictures of him.

Sad to see this. Body Heat and The Big Chill were two of my favorite movies from the college years. A girlfriend and I saw The Big Chill without knowing anything about it and made our entire friend group see it with us the next week. The soundtrack is still one of my all time favorites.

Maybe I'm thinking more into this than I should but I would have thought that dying at that age would be young to declare that it was natural causes. Maybe it was but maybe it should have been questioned or checked before stating that so soon. In either case, it's very sad. He was a great actor.

Yeah, for me that is too young be considered natural causes. Of course, my parents died at 90 and 99, which is typical for my family. I read, as was mentioned here, that he had terminal cancer several years ago. I wonder if the cancer came back and he wasn't made aware of that yet? It just doesn't seem fair for 71 years old to be all you get for no disease, accident, or other medical reason.

I was so sorry to see the news. He seemed younger to me.
I once had an awkward encounter with him at a hotel about twenty years ago. When we checked in with our two dogs, the clerk mentioned that there was only one other person in our wing. I wondered why in the world they would put us and our dogs directly across from a solitary guest in an otherwise empty wing. I was stressed out about keeping them quiet so we wouldn't receive a complaint. Every time the other guest opened his door, the youngest dog would let out a single bark. We registered that the other guest was "a tall man", but we tried hard to avoid him.
One night after dark, we were out walking the dogs and observed that the tall man was following a distance behind us. We sped up and he increased his pace till he caught up with us. He wanted to meet our corgis! 😄
He confirmed how smart and cute corgis are and how he admired the (two) breeds. I explained their names and the movies that inspired them. We asked if he had one, he said no, but he had known a few. (Totally didn't recognize him--he had a beard at the time). We walked in together chatting, he opened his door, and our extremely nosy older dog yanked the leash out of my hand and ran in! I was mortified and I am so glad that I didn't know who he was at the time!
When we checked out, the clerk said "oh, you were right across the hall from William Hurt" and that is when we realized how he knew all about corgis. 😄
P.S. As i understand it, "natural causes" refers to health conditions or illness, as opposed to homicide, suicide, accident or "undetermined".

I’ll bet he loved that he had a normal conversation like regular people without the “famous person” fawning and fake friendliness.
