A week before Penelope’s 8th birthday she got a big surprise. A tiny puppy. He was half Fox Terrier and half Rat Terrier. I often laughed and said he was fox and rat but no dog. For her bday invitation she put party hats on both her and her new puppy and we sent out the photos.
She named him Pluto Kisses Lincoln, so they would have the same initials. She was quick to tell everyone he was not named after the Disney dog, but rather a planet she felt was unfairly demoted.
He was ALWAYS there. Part of our family. Part of the background. Part of the yard in all seasons- rolling in the snow or chasing leaves or posing in the flowers.
We called him Happy Tail because he was always happy and wagging so fast. He was also Ploo, Ploop, Snoop, Pluto Minuto, and Pluto Planet.
He was part of all of our adventures! He went flying to the cabin in the super Cub, he loved going on the paddle boat or in the canoe. He followed along on trail rides. He learned agility and was amazing at it. He taught 4-H kids all about clicker training, he played Tic Tac Toe (his favorite game and he had his own booth to entertain) with grumpy old men at the State Fair and made them smile.
He knew SO many tricks, and would ask for trick training and be quite insulted if he saw me working with horses instead of him! He’d interrupt equine therapy client visits by jumping in and quickly performing whatever trick the horses were doing! He learned how to ride on Magic our mini horse. He’s the smartest dog I’ve ever met.
He would have been 16 in August.
Such shock and loss. That’s what we are facing today, as we said goodbye to Pluto and let him slip away.
Just a few days ago he was running happily, pestering me for horse treats in the barn, and doing his (favorite) treat puzzles.
I took him to the vet for a skin condition. He got home and vomited. I thought he was just feeling stressed. Then, he stopped eating and could hardly walk. That was Friday so Monday I took him back to the vet for full blood work and labs. They found a huge mass in his liver. We didn’t even get to take him home. We said goodbye and held and cuddled him as he slipped away. Our hearts are breaking.
RIP Pluto. You were loved deeply and our life won’t be the same without you.
Go gently and peacefully, Happy Tail 💔💔💔
