UPDATE: we had made the decision before the appointment that we were not going to extend his life, and really not have him continue in his current condition. Even though there was no obvious pain, discomfort, etc, just the rapid breathing seemed to be too much work for his little body. However, before we even made it to the appointment, he seemed to doze off, gasp a few times and passed at 330 pm. It was gentle. I am better for having and loving him all these years. I am going be a big crybaby for a good while-we are all heartbroken. Thanks for caring. Make the right decision at 4:15 today. We have a quality of life evaluation exam for our little pup then. He has declined rapidly since yesterday and while not seeming to be in any pain or distress or discomfort, his little body is working harder to breathe. He is not clearing respiratory secretions and the meds they put him on at the end of last month after a trip to an emergency vet and not really as effective any more. my heart is just breaking. He’s a month and a half shy of sixteen and I can’t bear the thought of losing him. He was the rock that held me together when his sister pup passed away 17 months ago at 15 1/2. Losing these beloved pets is like loosing a child or a family member. I just need the strength to let go—pray for him please! picture of Rascal sleeping on his favorite dinosaur “pillow” and wearing his bow tie collar—and of course, always with the tongue out!

Good luck. It's hard, for sure. When my cat of 16 years had a stroke, I had to remember that we gave that cat a pretty good life. I'm sure you did the same for your pup.

Just remember you are doing what is a loving thing, thinking of the dog and its comfort, not your breaking heart.
Hug of comfort for you.

I am so sorry. He reminds me a bit of my girl with his coloring and ears.
It is so hard to make that decision. I have had to make it twice and the other two times it was made for me (tragic early deaths). They are such a huge part of our lives.
Wishing you strength.

Thinking of you. What a sweet boy. Our German Shepherd is having health issues too and it just is devastating.

It is the hardest and worst decision to have to make. I've been in your shoes twice in the last five years. Our cattle dog lived 16-ish years (not entirely sure, as he was a rescue). Our lab lived for 14. In both situations, I was devastated, but you know what? Afterwards, I realized that I'd made the best decision for the pups themselves. Their loyalty (and my not wanting to say goodbye) would keep them hanging on way longer that was healthy and humane. So, as tough as it is, if quality of life is in question, it's often the best decision. I know that doesn't make it any easier for you. Thinking of you and your sweet pup. (((hugs)))

I’m so sorry to hear about your beloved family member, Rascal. It’s such an awful decision to have to make but it’s the last one to show just how much you love him. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult day.
My heart is broken for you.

I am.so sorry. I know how hard it is, but know that the best way to show your love for Rascal may be letting him go. It is sometimes the best kindness you can give him in return for all the love and devotion he gave you. I am so sorry. Hugs to you and Rascal and all that love him.

Ack. HUGS to you!!!!!!!!!! (What a cute pup he was). I faced a similar decision when the "love of my life" kitty one day fell over and seemed to be in distress. We brought him in to the ER (weekend, of course!) and this beautiful, forever-kitty at only 9 yrs old turned out to have cancer "everywhere" and couldn't breathe. I poured over the xrays and bloodwork, but it seemed so dire. I couldn't see this active, playful, incredibly supportive kitty live the last few weeks of his life in such pain, so I did what you did. It DID leave me a wreck for weeks, if not months.
I'm SO very sorry. I hope that you'll know that you did the right thing for him. xoxo

Please watch over your family as they adjust to life without you. They will still love you everyday and never forget all you gave them.

I’m so sorry for your loss and so glad that his passing was peaceful and you’d made your decision but didn’t have to see it through. What a long and blessed life your pets had with you! Still never long enough and it is so hard to say goodbye.
