I emailed corporate. Here is their response:
Thank you for taking the time to reach out to Chipotle. We're sorry that your experience didn't go as planned. We're working hard to ensure the next time you choose us, it'll be what you expect from Chipotle. Unfortunately, our Customer Care team is currently handling higher-than-normal comment volumes. In an effort to make things right, and to prevent you from waiting on us any longer, we've dropped a free chips-and-guacamole offer into the Rewards section of your Chipotle account. You can use it on any online order, or you can scan the code to redeem in-store anytime over the next 30 days. We are excited to welcome you back for a much-improved experience soon.
OP: So… I’m at Chipotle picking up a mobile order….which is late. I’m standing there, watching the prep line used specifically for mobile orders make food. There is a teenage boy, not wearing a Chipotle shirt, on a step ladder cleaning a metal shelf directly above where they are preparing food. He’s wiping dust off of it. He’s holding A paper burrito bowl to catch the dust. Again— directly over where they are preparing food! He then proceeds to get one of those dusters on a big pole and dust the walls and vents in the same area… Not 3 feet from where they are preparing food. Am I over reacting to think that is absolutely GROSS? Mind you….it is 5:00 pm and they are very busy. Lots of people watching.
I had to say something….I didn’t want to find a big dust bunny in my guacamole. The manager, and then the general manager, seemed completely unconcerned. They acted like I was the crazy one. Tried to convince me that all the food was covered up. BULLSHIT. I was watching. I made them redo my food on the other line and they were PISSED. They were extra slow. I was not hysterical or rude, but I made it clear that it was unacceptable and told them they should have higher standards. The manager said “We do have high standards. That’s the Chipotle way.” They did NOT like me and I’m sure they’re calling me an old Karen right about now….
Am I overreacting? I wish I would’ve gotten a video, but I did snap a few pics.

Not overreacting. That is gross and clearly something that should be done during the store’s closing routine, NOT during service hours when food is being prepared.

You are absolutely NOT overreacting! I would have done the same thing. Good for you! I would be contacting corporate since they were completely unconcerned.

Another opinion of NOT overreacting. I would go as far as to contact corporate and let them know what that location thinks is the "Chipotle" way! No way is that acceptable with the health code. What is more important to them, a dusted shelf or uncontaminated food? And if they think this is acceptable in front of consumers, what are they doing before they open?? Yeah, I would contact corporate AND the health department. That is so unsanitary.

You realize that the line you got your food from probably had thebsame thing done to it earlier, right? 😂
I would be more pissed about their shit attitudes once you brought it to their attention. That would have me contacting corporate

That is something that needs to be corrected. Clearly the local people don't have a problem with it. I might have taken a picture or two. Just gross.

i am sure that is *not* the chipotle standard... and i likely would have said something too (side issue, i can't stand the expression "karen").
i was at burger king in barcelona a week ago (ew, i know, i had teenagers that wanted "spanish burger king"). staff did not speak english. the woman ahead of me brought back her burger to the counter, showing her there was something wrong with it and wasn't what she ordered. the young woman wrapped it back up and put it back on the burger holding pen (?!?). then started putting my order together and grabbed THAT BURGER and put it on my tray.
i was like "uh, i don't want that... i mean she touched it?! i will wait but would like a fresh burger please". she didn't understand me but i guess my pointing and gesturing got my point across. i mean ?!?!?!?

You didn’t over react…that said I would not have taken ANY food from them. If they are doing that where people can see imagine what they are doing when you can’t see. Ewwwww

Gross. I am surprised they are actually cleaning the grates but can't believe they didn't see anything wrong with doing that above the food prep line. Have they never dusted a ceiling fan or something?

The GM was actually defensive. He had no apology—only excuses. He was on a conference call and didn’t see what they were doing….what was he supposed to do? How about TRAIN your staff and hold them accountable. I told him exactly what he should have said—
“I am so sorry. You’re right….that is unacceptable. Let me remake your food. And I will talk to my staff and make sure they’re properly trained so that never happens again. Thank-you for bringing it to my attention.”

During my years in restaurants, cleaning like that was always done after hours for that very reason. I’d report them to the county health department.

My husband and I quit eating at the Chipotle closest to where we live because two visits in a row it was really dirty - like I wanted to ask for a broom so I could sweep and a wet cloth so I could wipe down tables. I'm bummed that I'm grossed out by the location because I really like Chipotle. The next closest one is pretty far from where we live. I think I'd probably be done with your Chipotle too.

Not overreacting.
I probably would have responded with, “if this is an acceptable practice, you won’t have an issue letting me film them cleaning while you tell me that it is acceptable so I can share it with Corporate and the health department.” If they want to tell me I’m being unreasonable then I will accept it. 😊

Ick, ick, ick, not over-reacting at all! I'd file a complaint with the local Health Department, along with the pictures that you sent. I don't know about the state you live in but in our state, or at least in our county, the Health Department would be all over that...

Yes, all of this. All of the above.
Hasn't Chipotle been in trouble before due to sub-standard standards? (lol) I think they have.
The franchise you frequent should be shut down.

Yeah, I would contact corporate AND the health department. That is so unsanitary. I *would* have videoed it and forwarded it to corporate and the state health department. I might even be inclined to post that video on their Facebook or Twitter. When I did my brief stint in a restaurant all of the deep cleaning happened after hours or in a section of the store that was totally closed off (dining areas had to have all the walls washed down and the carpets cleaned every so often). All the kitchen cleaning like that happened when the restaurant was closed. That’s just nasty and there’s no way I would eat there even if I watched them remake the food.

I was walking in a Mall one day and saw something similar at a booth that sells ice cream. I was not going to purchase there but definitely would not buy based on what was happening. I did bring what I saw to the sales associates attention. She did not seem interested. I contacted head office and they were definitely interested and thanked me for letting them know. Think about contacting head office and send along pictures. Perhaps use a hotmail e-mail account.

Absolutely worth shooting corporate an email, especially since the response you got was that this is standard operating procedure for them. And I would never eat there again.
