I'm perplexed as to the politics of Cannon Beach that may be an issue. It's a beautiful place - enjoy. I'm assuming that because the Florida travel thread went sideways for political reasons, OP was concerned this one could too since Oregon is on the other end of the political spectrum. Thanks! I didn't read that one.

Now that I am not posting on my break I would like to add I highly recommend Astoria, just like busy said, it is really fun and the Maritime Museum is really great. I am going to look at my photos and see where we had dinner there, it was one of the best meals I have had. There are precious few lighthouses you can visit, so be sure to research which they are before you head out. I love Tillamook but I would go to Astoria and Cannon over that. Don't bother with Seaside, people talk it up, but it isn't anything special and the beach there is boring as a beach can be. It is very tourist trappy there. Florence is a lot of fun and the beach is so different then Cannon. Definitely do a dune buggy ride if you haven't before. That was so much fun!

I don't think anyone has mentioned Ecola State Park. Beautiful views looking out over Cannon Beach, however, I think the road to get up there is still closed due to landslides or something (at least it was at the end of March). If you are traveling down the WA coast, one of my favorite places to go is Cape Disappointment near Ilwaco. Waikiki Beach is small and rocky (with a lighthouse up high) but you can also take a short walk to the ocean beach side and see another lighthouse. We have camped there several times and I LOVE it. Probably my favorite place on the OR coast is in the southern area - Bandon & Brookings. The views are incredible.

It is beautiful, but you can't see much without a little walk and with her husband being disabled it may not be walkable.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions! A few of these were already on our list, as we had a friend visit there recently and share some insight as well.
We are planning on staying at the Ocean Lodge. One reason we chose Cannon Beach is because it is totally different from the Seaside, FL and Telluride, CO trips that we take often. We wanted to switch it up a bit.
We are not big on getting in the ocean, so the cold water won’t be a big deal. No kids, so we can just chill out while there, but since this is our first time to OR, we didn’t want to miss out on seeing something we’d be disappointed in missing if we never got back there.
We’re really excited!

We were just in Cannon Beach this past weekend for my husband's birthday and stayed at the Ocean Lodge, you will not be disappointed! Easy access to the beach and a quick walk to Haystack Rock, as someone else mentioned definitely check it out at low tide.

We are planning on staying at the Ocean Lodge. The Ocean Lodge is nice, but be aware you'll either need to drive most places or walk into town via the beach, as the road from Tolovana into downtown is narrow and windy and not great for walking. Have a great trip!

My friend and I are doing a girls' trip in September and flying to Seattle to spend a few days and then taking a few days to drive down to Portland for a few days before heading home. We have a night booked in Seaside, but I think we'll move that to Astoria after reading all the reviews here. There are lots of great tips here. Thank you everyone!

The good stuff near cannon beach has been covered, so I’d like to mention some interesting things north. There is the Peter Iredale, a shipwreck that has been gradually sinking into the sand for 115 years Still enough left at low tide to be a cool thing to enjoy.
The old Battery is also fascinating to visit. Empty buildings and cannon platforms from WW 2.
Near where the Columbia meets the ocean is an elevated viewing platform. Stunning vistas. ( it’s by the jetty )

If you do go to Fort Stevens (where all the above is), Fort Clatsop at the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park www.nps.gov/lewi/index.htm is nearby and worth a visit. Also, just south of Cannon Beach, we enjoyed going to Short Sand Beach. We went when the kids were young to see surfers and we're not disappointed. That was in the summer though. Another vote for the Maritime Museum in Astoria if you end up there.
