We will be going in October. We do know that it is a bit more rainy at that time of year.
*If you specifically do not like it there, or don't agree with politics, please don't answer. This is our destination of choice for vacation, and we plan on enjoying it. Thanks!

Cannon Beach is one of my families favorite destinations. We haven't been in a few years, but we are typically all about hiking. Tillamook Cheese isn't that far south, and their tour is fun! Get an ice cream, you won't be disappointed.

I LOVE Cannon Beach! You might be surprised on how nice the Oregon coast can be in October. The thing about Cannon beach it that it’s a little bit isolated. When we go we usually just enjoy the beach and the cute little town. They have some great restaurants and many cute shops and galleries.
If you want to do a day trip you might want to consider going south to Tillamook and touring the cheese factory. Or head north to Astoria and check that out. I haven’t been in a while but there is lot to see there including the Goonies house! It’s also worth it to climb up the Astoria column.

Marking my place. We are driving the entire Oregon coast in June, and I'd love recommendations for anywhere up and down the coast.

When we were there we basically just enjoyed walking on the beach and the cute town. There was a little crepe place we really liked. And driving along the Oregon coast and all the neat towns. October seems like a great time to go.

We took a trip to Cannon Beach back in March. As we're from Los Angeles I assumed we'd be fine with just a short visit (we get plenty of beach trips at home and it's not one of my favorite things to do), but we ended up loving it and want to go back already. We took a trip to Tillamook to visit the factory (don't think they have the guided tour anymore but it's like a cheese museum and one of my favorite souvenirs ended up being a super soft Tillamook t-shirt) and then drove to Cannon Beach where we stayed the night at the Inn at Cannon Beach. We loved the little town and got some good beach photos in the freezing cold the next morning, but we had a flight out of Portland that afternoon so had to leave pretty early that day.

Bruce's Candy Kitchen is a must visit for us. Other then just having fun and wandering around really try to get to Haystack Rock when the tide is out but don't underestimate the tide coming in. And not sure how familiar you are with our coast but the undertow is STRONG. Don't let go of little ones hands or let your animals run free in the water.

Also, if you have any Goonie fans and extra time drive to Astoria for the day and visit the Goonie House (they let you walk up the street to it, just take pictures from a respectable distance) and visit the movie museum.

Marking my place. We are driving the entire Oregon coast in June, and I'd love recommendations for anywhere up and down the coast. We like Florence. It has a cute downtown to wander in, and if there is a guy selling peaches at the fruit stand near the public parking lot (he gives out samples) they are the best peaches ever. There is also a adventure park thing off the highway that you can play mini-golf/games or pay to ride in this giant dune buggy thing (they do the driving) tour. It was very fun (there's a fast one, and a not so fast one, we did the slower one). The sea lion caves were also fun as is the Heceta Head Lighthouse.

And seriously, pull off at every vista point and state park you see. You will be surprised at how different things can look just a few miles apart.
About an hour and a half south is Pacific City. It's a cute beachy town with huge sand dunes.

Anita , how long do you have for your drive? Where are you starting and ending? What kinds of things do you like to do? We are flying into Seattle, then taking three days to drive down the coast before we head to see the Redwoods. Then we are driving back up to see Crater Lake before heading back to Seattle to fly home. My husband is disabled, so nothing with a lot of walking like nature hikes, but we do love a good view that's easy to get to. We also love museums and funky little places to buy souvenirs. And we love to find places to eat that are not national chains. We are hoping for a very leisurely drive where we can stop a lot along the way and just enjoy the coast.
Right now we are staying in Westport, WA the first night, Garibaldi, OR the next, then in Florence the third night. Sounds like Florence was a good choice.
ETA: I am also a lighthouse fan, so we will stop at any of those along the way.

I also really like Florence. I thought the dunes were super neat, there are some amazing hikes near by and an amazing restaurant with delicious Hawaiian food and cocktails.

October can be gorgeous - the fall at the beach is our favorite time of year there (though all this seasons are wonderful there in their own way). About what to do... Cannon Beach is small town and very walkable and you could have an absolutely lovely time walking everywhere, poking around stores and restaurants, walking the beach, exploring tide pools, and just enjoying the scenery and relaxed vibe. Or, if you want to SEE AND DO, you can take a few day trips. Fun things within easy driving distance - Astoria. Tons of stuff to do there. Bowpicker for the best fish & chips you'll ever have Astoria Column is cool. Cathedral Tree trail to the column is a great hike. Frite & Scoop has excellent ice cream (way better than Tillamook IMO). The Maritime Museum is way more interesting that you might expect. Going south, Newport is also a fun visit, especially the aquarium. Others have mentioned the Tillamook Cheese Factory and it's fun but not worth a long wait IMO. Closer to Cannon Beach, Oswald West State Park has some good hiking, Hug Point is a fun beach at low tide. Saddle Mountain is a moderately challenging hike but gorgeous. Seaside is a popular destination but as someone who lived in Astoria for 10 years and has been a regular visitor to the north Oregon coast for my whole life, I rarely go there. There's just not anything that draws us there. Note, the Pacific is very cold, especially up here. You might want to wade up to your knees, but you're not going to want to swim in the ocean. The beach also tends to be pretty breezy, so pack layers. And even when it's beautiful weather, the ocean here is very strong. Do not turn your back on the water and pay attention to any kind of warnings that may be issued. I absolutely love Cannon Beach and the north coast in general. It's not an "exciting" place but it's stunningly beautiful and peaceful. Feel free to DM if you have any specific questions OP, have you booked a place to stay yet? If I were you, I'd choose some place near downtown vs near Tolovana. You can walk to more in the downtown area. Cannon Beach restaurants, etc: Insomnia is the best coffee in town and they also have good housemade pastries. Crepe Neptune is delicious Pizza a Fetta is good; skip Fultano's Mo's is overrated Pig 'n Pancake is also overrated - Lazy Susan is better for breakfast (Lazy Susan doesn't take credit cards, so have cash if you go) Pelican Brew Pub is good food, but often long waits Public Coast Brewing is decent The Bistro is my favorite fine dining. Newman's at 988 is also excellent. I'd skip the Wayfarer Restaurant - the quality of the food doesn't align with the prices IMO Ecola Seafood is good We got takeout from Castaways several times during covid and it was fantastic. Haven't actually eaten in the restaurant, though. Oh, almost forgot that Cannon Beach Fresh Foods, the grocery store in Tolovana, is FAR superior to Mariner Market in town. Lots of great local stuff there, good produce and meats. Mariner Market is overpriced, limited selection, and not much unique or interesting.

Manzanita is close to there, and is really pretty and low-key. We have a house we’ve rented the past few years in Arch Cape (which is in between Cannon Beach and Manzanita), and we really like going into Manzanita (and they have a really good bookstore!)

Also marking my place as we are driving the coast in early September starting from Port Angeles. We want to spend two nights in Astoria and then we don’t really have plans beyond that. We will end up in Sonoma or Napa for a few nights before getting to baseball games in Sam Francisco and Oakland. We are in a motorhome with electric bikes and craft beer drinkers if anyone has any suggestions for us. We will turn into wine drinkers in Sonoma/Napa!

I don't have much to add, but we spent spring break there last year for a week on Nelson Beach (by Lincoln City)
one day our friend took us for a drive to get the best burgers I have ever had! It was a cute little beach town, the burger place was a total hole in the wall right off the beach. There were like 2 tables and there were tons of college kids and surfers. There was a main road that went through the town and right directly across the street was a market place that sold ice creams and gift things and a deli food area.
I wish I could remember the name of the town/place, but I can't! Does this sound familiar to anyone? Or too random? LOL.
We went to Tillamook too and it was a pretty drive to get there from where we stayed. Lots of fun little antique stores along the way too, if you like that sort of thing there is plenty of antique thrift stores everywhere.

I think all of the Mo's restaurants are over rated except for the original one in Newport, it is for sure worth a stop. If you like clam chowder and bay shrimp, their slumgullion stew is in my top 10 favorite foods.

Man its bugging me now. I tried Googling "Burger stand Oregon coast" but not seeing it. It wasn't a sit down restaurant, it had 2 picnic tables out front, and you stood in line to pick up. There was a ton of people waiting. There was a surf shop right next door and the highway ran through the town and there was that grocery store/deli with the huge ice cream counter. I'll have to ask my friend.

I'm perplexed as to the politics of Cannon Beach that may be an issue.
It's a beautiful place - enjoy.

You will be near-ish Ashland so you could go to the Shakespeare festival. I haven’t been in years but I always loved it.

We drove the Washington-Oregon-California coast a few years ago. I don't have anything specific to Cannon City, but the Oregon Coast is beautiful (and I live in a coastal town in CA). Tillamook was fun and if you go on a weekday you'll be able to see cheese making in action (on the assembly line). We had samples, ate at the café, and had ice cream. We stopped at other artisan creameries and cheese shops in the area too. We picked up a Mile by Mile brochure from a rest stop / tourist info areas and there was a lot of stuff to do and see. I think we stopped at (almost) every pull out, lighthouse and overlook. In the northwest part of Oregon is Fort Stevens, Lewis & Clark Nat'l Monument and Astoria.
Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll have a great time.
