It can be work-related or not. Have you discovered your passion?
My calling is ministering to the hearts of women. I love to come alongside hurting women, pray with them, offer encouragement and biblical wisdom when I can. When I came to our current church I saw the people who are now my best friends doing this. They did that for me and I jumped in with both feet. I've spoken in front of the group a couple of times and discovered I love that - the entire process. But I love the day to day walking life out with them.
I came into this as other women poured love and caring into me and I wanted to do the same. We are there for each other and together we are there for other women.
Dh and I used to head up a kids ministry but that was definitely not our calling. As if I needed confirmation of that, about a month ago there was this little kid crying outside the church. His dad was with him, I didn't know either of them. I quickly walked past. And I realized that if you give me a crying woman I will be all up in her business. Lol
This week I saw some other people whose job is their passion. This was in the hospice wing of the hospital. When the nurse would come in to check on my dad and stay and just tenderly watch him for a few minutes. Then the aide talked to us and you could tell she put her whole heart into her job and loved each patient that came through.
So how about you? Do you have a calling or passion that you've discovered? What is it? How did you realize this is what you loved to do?

I have a passion for animals, dogs especially and they have always seemed to trust me and befriend me easily. I have found a dozen or so lost dogs over the years and was able to reuinte all but two with their owners. The other two ended up as rescues who found new homes.
I seem to notice a dog that is on its own (rare here because of leash laws) and always stop for them. They seem to come to me willingly and to sense that I want to help them. It always fills my heart with joy to reunite them with their families before something bad could happen to them. I know how I would feel if one of my dogs were ever to be lost and what it would mean to me for someone to help them.
About a month ago ds, 17, came home for a walk with a black lab cross he had found running loose. He had taken the time to follow it until he could catch it and brought it home. We were able to find its owners and hand him back safely. I was so proud of ds.
Another of my passions is writing. It has allowed me to reach people that I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to have our paths cross, and to make friendships that I otherwise might not have made.
I think anyone who can find their passion and share it a way that enriches the lives of others is very fortunate. It made my heart glad to read the above posts.

I love the preschool child and have for as long as I can remember. My job is teaching preschool.
My other passion is helping hurting women, particularly the ones who have either lost a child or have a child with disabilities. I helped start a Sunday School class in our church for families with disabled children. It's a pay it forward thing because there were a couple of women who poured their heart into my DD when we had no place for her to go on Sunday mornings at church. After she passed away I knew what I needed to do. It took awhile but it has been accomplished.

Volunteering for and improving our schools. I'm currently the president of two PTAs in town and I really like being involved in the schools and making sure all the children are represented.

I don't think it's possible for every single person to have a calling or passion. All I can do is make it through life. I don't have time or money to pursue what I feel is important.

Writing. It's why I became a technical writer. I get to do what I love in a practical way. Makes a huge difference in my world to enjoy my job. I've never had that before.

Well-- dogs. I don' do anything productive with them, but that's my interest and heart. Me, too. This year I have stopped donating $$ (not time), to all the solicitations I get from friends or work, for other people's passions. I strictly donate only to mine now. Except for seniors. I donate for their causes, too. And as a side note. My DH and I will sometimes take the street route home so we can look for stray dogs. Where we live there is still a lot of undeveloped land. It's kind of a joke between us, and we are really hoping not to find any, but once we did find a what appeared to be well-cared for yellow lab. After driving around and asking people, we ended taking him to get scanned and left our number with the vet's office. The next morning we got a call from his owner. YAY!

I had a big switch a few years back and now my purpose is all about fighting for my dgd, and covering her back. The other stuff was great, but there has been a second career switch of sorts. Kicking butt for her and others like her. medical condition. We're even beginning a new business in 2015 to assist with that. Turns out THIS will be the big thing I accomplish. I hope I get to live long enough to see it all play out.
I can't remember exactly how I knew. I just did suddenly when I woke up one day. My dd and I travel extensively and were on a long flight when we talked about it, and she had the same experience, so we kind of confirmed it for each other. It's no longer really about what we ourselves do, but what we prepare her for. If we wanted further confirmation, we have been in smaller local churches outside the country, where no one knows anything about us, and had notes of encouragement, direction and passages given to all 3 of us multiple times confirming this. They shake their heads as they hand us the notes, because in their experience they can't see how their message makes sense, given their local situation. But it does. Heck even strangers on city buses have come over, asked to sit by me, and told me the same thing.
What a good story! I love to hear things like this, thanks for sharing. I'm hoping to figure out what my calling is and would love a moment like this to confirm. Great thread, jenjie!

I have things that I enjoy doing but no real passion. I enjoy genealogy but it ebbs and flows. I enjoy baking and cooking. I used to love photography but that has dwindled. I was really into fashion and fashion designing for a long time but that too has faded. So no real passion here. I think it is partly things get hard for me to do with my RA and health that I get discouraged and stop.

Jenjie, what a great thread! This is something I've been mulling over in this little head of mine recently. beachgurl, I'd love to hear more about this fight for your dgd. You seem so passionate about it - please tell us more.

Mine is nursing/healthcare. I am in nursing school now after teaching. I also work as a CNA and I can honestly say every shift I've worked as a CNA has been infinitely more fulfilling than any day I worked as a teacher.

I think my passion would be my career as an acute PT. I work mainly with total joints, and my belief is that PT shouldn't be torture, or something patients dread. I try to make it fun, comfortable, non threatening, as pain free as I can, and an overall safe environment for them to be during this stressful, painful time.

beachgurl refresh my memory. Are you the one who was looking for wheelchair-friendly places for dgd for vacation a few years ago? I remember the thread but didn't remember which pea it was. ETA I absolutely love the various ways it has been confirmed to you!

I love each of these stories!
Dog lovers you reminded me of a story my pastor likes to tell. He says "I'm not crazy about animals but I am crazy about my wife." Or something to that effect. What's important to her is important to him. So even when she isn't with him he will stop the car and move the turtle out of the middle of the road. One time he was trying to help this dog. IIRC he was on the way to church, in suit and tie, rainy day, muddy dog, the whole nine yards. That stray dog became their beloved family pet.

Chaplain. In a hospital (where I do on-call work now), or a hospice, or anywhere that needs one. But my particular calling is to work with the elderly. If I could write my future I'd have a regular paying job at a retirement community or nursing home.

Children are my passion and making a difference for them is my calling. It's been that way since I was a teenager. At different points in my life the mechanics have changed, but it's always been at the heart of who I am. (I just wish it paid better. )

Being a Mom, whether to my own children or to children/teens who don't have parents that give them enough time/attention. There are so many even in my neighborhood. It's not uncommon for me to feed extra kids at night because Mom doesn't get home until 7 or 8 PM. I am currently going back to school to finish my teaching degree. I'll get certified secondary ed 6-12. I also sub 4-5 days a week at DD's middle school and love it! I seem to gravitate and connect with the students who need extra attention.

Advocating for foster children. I love being their voice (because in the CWS they really don't have one). I would spend each and every moment in court fighting for what is best for them if I could.

I´m lately realizing my passion or calling is to help in some way people who has been sexually abused, as a survivor I know what is like to be there, to think it will never end, and then at some point make it to the other side and if not fully recover, not make it who you are, but a part that shaped you. I wish there was a way I could touch more people as here in México you need a degree to do this sort of work and my degree is totally different. Hope I can make it happen some way.
It is awesome to see so many people here committed to causes that are dear to their hearts, you are all a great group of ladies <3
