I am, as I stated earlier, the world's okayest mom. That also means that I am the world's okayest housekeeper. My house is clean, but it isn't show room worthy EVER. I prefer that people call before they come over-with enough lead time for me to do a mad dash through the house to clean. LOL Anyway, I just learned about a new spot that should have been getting attention that never has. It was very very yucky. Have you ever cleaned the underside of your sink drain where the disposal is? You know, under and around the inside where the rubber flaps are? How did I get to be 48 and not know I was supposed to do this?? I had a funky smell around the sink, so I did the usual and ran baking soda/ice cubes down the drain. That didn't completely take care of it, so I googled. The tip to clean under the rubber stuff came up. I did. It was disgusting. No more smell, but OMG. I will never, ever neglect this chore again. EVER. Please feel free to laugh and point now. And share any other places that get regularly neglected because of ignorance so I can add them to my "perfect housecleaner wanna be" list.

I don't have a garbage disposal (I think they are not allowed here?), but I'm willing to bet there are places in my home that should be cleaned that I don't know of. I'm so not on the "housekeeper of the year list".

Well, at least it was a small area. I am a bit surprised that you've never noticed it smelling bad before now though.
Yes, I have always cleaned mine. I make a bowl of water/bleach solution to soak the rubber piece while I scrub the drain area with gloves on. I also put bleach in there. When I leave the house for an overnight or more, I pour a bit of bleach down every sink in the house and put the drain covers on them. It cuts down on that stuffy, stinky, closed-up house smell that you get when you've been gone.

I only learned that the rubber stuff comes out quite recently. My extremely fastidious husband showed me. Thankfully our disposal was replaced fairly recently so it wasn't too awful, but it's on the list of things I clean now.
I am the world's okayest mom, too. This morning my boys (2 and 3) were fighting like crazy, so I gave them each a toilet brush and sent them to clean the two toilets. This kept them busy for nearly an HOUR. Why had I not thought of this before?

Funny you should say that. My bathroom sink was running slow this morning so I took the stopper thing out and OMG! It was so slimy and gunky and gross. I never in a million years would think to pull that out and clean it. Ick. I probably should check out the sink drain/disposal thin gee too. Or maybe not.

Well, at least you figured it out and took action!
That happened to our disposal rubber flappy thing too! (Do you like the technical name I used for it?!) Like you, I smelled something funky and discovered the root of the odor was the underside of the flaps! YUCK!

I clean it, but I don't think I do a good job. I wet a papertowel with bleach and scrub the sides of the disposal, and underneath the rubber flaps. I just clean it until the towel is not too black. I think I need to do a better job.

I don't have a garbage disposal, and with the exception of a week or two in a new home before it was removed, I have never had one, so I absolutely did not have known that, either.

I don't have a garbage disposal but I could see myself forgetting or not knowing about that area.

We just got a home with my first disposal. Thanks for the tip. By the way, that warning period you wrote of, I call that "Tornado Clean Time"

On my disposal the thing with the rubber flaps comes out. It pushes in tightly but comes out for cleaning. Makes it much easier to clean that area. Oh and there is some product you just squirt down the disposal and it is an expanding foam so it expands into all of those gross little areas and the crap sticks to the foam. I have not personally used it but a gal at work raves about it.

I have an old toothbrush that lives under the kitchen sink just for this purpose. I'm kind of surprised you haven't noticed a stink before now. They do get really nasty!

That's one I do actually clean. Probably not often enough, but I do clean it.
My weakness is under/behind large appliances like the fridge, stove and washer/dryer. And windows. I hate cleaning windows.

I've got one for you. If you have a shower door that opens out, run a paper towel under the door

Yeah, the apartment we just moved out of had a disposal, and was that ever nasty. Always had a slimy coating on it. I'm happy to say our new house we are closing on next week has no disposal. We used to have nothing but issues with the one at the apt so I am glad not to have to deal with one now.

If you want to get out of that nasty chore for a little longer, clean the disposal with baking soda and vinegar. Just stand back when you pour the vinegar.
I'm like a little kid at 6th grade Science Fair when I get to do that. Family knows I'll cut a b*tch who takes that job from me.
And yes, that was in fact me with the soda and mentos last year on 4th of july, possibly the 8 years before that to. Now to figure out how to do both at the same time without losing an eye, and I'll have the grand finales of all grand finales.
Hmmm.... I feel I should be posting Nerd Alert all over this post.

I realized this when my mil asked me "when's the last time you took these curtains down and washed them?" and I thought "you're supposed to take curtains down and wash them?"

Would you mind asking your coworker what the name of her stuff is? I would really appreciate it.

I was cleaning my cabinet doors recently, and made the mistake of looking at the baseboard underneath the cabinets, no that was gross. I need to set aside a whole Nother day and about five more sponges for that chore.

Well, I'm not going to laugh and point at you because I.had.no.idea. and I'm no slouch at minor home repair. I think I'll put it on DH's honey-do list and see how that goes for me! (Now you can laugh and point at me, 'cause we all know I'm not going to get any traction with DH on that one!)

Ooops! I'm supposed to clean that? How do you get the rubber flaps out? I do NOT want to stick my hand down in there. I've always been afraid of that thing turning on by itself!

I'm checking as someone who has lived in our house for ten years and I've never done that. Maybe our cleaning lady does it???
