Of not being able to breathe for a few seconds?
Wow, it happened to me today and it was S.C.A.R.Y! Seriously did not think I would get my breath and it was just water that went up my nasl passages instead of down. Of course it didn't help that my nose was stuffed up.
I survived.

I have and you're right, it is very scary. I had been eating popcorn and a piece got caught in my throat. Someone actually gave me the heimlich maneuver.

Yup, choked on a hunk of one of those Big Bob candy canes (the kind that are about 1" diameter) when I was a kid. Very scary! I haven't ever eaten one since.

Yes, on a piece of orange when I was a teenager. I could feel myself passing out, but luckily was able to gasp and choke it down. It is something I will never forget, that's for sure!

Yikes! Glad you're okay! Yes, I have had it happen 3 times; Once when I was about 7, I choked on a piece of candy that an older man passed out to all the kids at church. I ran to the bathroom and tried everything I could to get it out. It finally dislodged and all was okay. I didn't tell anyone because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to eat candy anymore. The next 2 times were as a young adult. One time it was powdered sugar from a funnel cake and the other I was blowing bubbles at the daycare I worked it. That was HORRIBLE! I inhaled to blow and sucked in the soap water. It dried out my throat so bad, I thought I'd never produce more saliva. LOL VERY scary.

I have asthma and I was sick for about 2 months. I had *nothing* in my mouth. Nothing. I started to choke and couldn't breathe. Choke, choke, choke. No air in our out. I used my inhaler at least 8 times over and over and nothing would stop the coughing. I started to panic. My GP says if that happens again to call 911. We were at a restaurant and I didn't want to cause a scene. I went outside so as not to disturb other patrons but what a PITA that was. Cough, cough, cough. It took a long time to get better.

I choked on a spear of Asparagus. Was able to pull it out but it was scary.
My DD choked on turkey at our Thanksgiving dinner 6 years ago. Huge gathering of relatives, and she was at a different table than I was. Thankfully one of her cousins was a lifeguard, recognized the signs, and administered the Heimlich Manuever.
Choking, like drowning, is much more silent than movies portray it. All the "Help me, I'm drowning (or choking)" noises that movies play up are not actually possible in many cases because the windpipe is blocked.
We were really lucky that the cousin noticed my daughter's distress. She flew into action to remove the blockage.

So scary! Does anyone know where we could look for help with what to do if we or someone is and needs help? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I know I could google, but maybe someone has a good site that they recommend.

When my son was a baby he choked on a piece of apple. He didn't make a sound - just looked at me with a confused expression as his face turned purple. I pulled him out of that high chair and performed the infant Heimlich on him. The apple flew across the room. He breathed in and then we both started crying.
A few years later I choked on a Mentos. I breathed it into my windpipe somehow. Mentos are the perfect size to completely block the tube. I thought I was going to die right there in my son's elementary school. I will never eat another Mentos, that's for sure.
The universal sign for choking is to cross your arms across your chest with both hands around your throat - thumbs overlapping in front of your throat, hands on either side. I am sure that description is confusing. Google "universal sign for choking" and you'll see images.
Infant Heimlich Maneuver is different than the maneuver for adults. I learned it at a free Red Cross class. I am so glad I did. My son is grown with two little ones of his own. I can't imagine life without him.

When I was young, maybe 7-8-9 years old, I was choking on something, and a family friend who was 5 years older than me gave me the Heimlich maneuver. I remember not being able to get any air at all. Thank God she was in the room with me, or I would have died, I'm sure of it. Scary.

Yes, it is really scary. I know of two people (family of friends) that have died from choking on food when they were home alone. It actually makes me really nervous because I tend to eat too fast and I choke more than a normal person.

VERY scary. When I was a tween I was eating a cookie and inhaled as I took a bite and it got stuck in my throat. I was home alone and thought I was going to die. I finally coughed it up but that memory it still with me 50+ years later.

I don't know of any website recommendations, but I know there are ways to give yourself the heimlech maneuver with an object like a chair.

Sorry if that's a dumb question, I know I could google, but maybe someone has a good site that they recommend. Probably the American Red Cross. When my dd was lifeguard training she took an emergency first aid class there as well as her CPR and week long lifeguarding class.

Yesterday. My BF and I had just left Mexican restaurant and I had a mint in my mouth. I was driving and it went down my throat when I was trying to move it around in my mouth. He was talking and not looking at me. I had my hand in my mouth trying to get it when he noticed and freaked out. I managed to dislodge it with my finger and almost threw up in the process.

About 10 years ago, I was taking medication when I choked. I truly thought I was going to die. I have always had a hard time swallowing pills. This pill was a time release capsule. It got turned and stuck sideways in my throat. I was trying to wash it down with water when the capsule exploded in my throat. I tried gasping for air but got nothing. I knew for sure I was going to die. I was so sad thinking of my kids growing up without me. They were about 2,4 and 6. My dh was asleep. I was running to the bedroom to wake him to call 911, when I felt like I was going to throw up. So I ran back to the bathroom and violently threw up while gasping for air. I was puking, crying and trying to get my breathe back. My throat burned and hurt for days after that.

Me! A few weeks ago I was eating corn chips and managed to choke and inhale some of the fragments. I literally could not breathe. I was terrified! I could not even get breath to cough again. I was so afraid I was going to die. Let me tell you, I was praying! Suddenly, the chips started coming back out of my lung and I was able to get breath to cough again. I honestly believe it was an answer to prayer!

My swallowing mechanism was somehow damaged during medical intubation. I could choke on anything as I couldn't tell where the food would go. Mushy stuff was especially bad for some reason. It is scary.
My niece in middle school, the day after Halloween, was given the choice to swallow a jawbreaker or spit it out. She chose to swallow, subsequently choked. Heimlech wasn't known by teacher, or class mates, or by principal, by the time EMS attended she was very purple and non responsive. Very difficult time for them to get it out. The shape I guess. The school implemented a policy not to offer the swallow option after that.

Yes, many times. My swallowing mechanism doesn't work properly and it got so bad I had to give up solid food completely. Sometimes it's so bad I can choke on thin air!
