As I’m knee deep in wedding registering, I’m super curious about all things dish-related! Someone in the paper plate thread mentioned they had plates and silverware for 40. How many people could you feed with your everyday dishes and cutlery?

We have a service for 8, but I recently bought extra salad sized plates because we typically use them instead of our bigger dinner plates. I’m about to go buy extra soup/cereal bowls because we only had 6 of those to begin with, one got broken and it feels like we’re always running out before the dishwasher gets turned on (I only like to run it when it’s actually full).
ETA: We already donated all of the smaller Corelle coffee cups that matched our pattern. DH prefers some bigger 16 ounce stoneware mugs for his morning coffee.

Someone in the paper plate thread mentioned they had plates and silverware for 40. That was me, so my answer remains the same.

I am in a small studio. I could serve four if I had to. Appetizer sized plates, small plate - small portions. I have a set of "four of each" utensils. Two each of two different sized glasses. I have a small (30x30) bistro style table, with two chairs (I have two stools that could be added). In general, I am not set up for, nor do I enjoy entertaining. I do not enjoy cooking, I cook because I have to . If I were the "I love entertaining" type, my inventory and set up would be much different.

I have a set for 8. But, the "lunch" sized plates are the size of normal plates and the dinner plates are freaking huge. So I have 16 plates I use for meals and 8 bowls. For a single person, these last a good while.

I have 8 settings. and 12 in my very good china. I just inherited 2 more silver sets.. so place sets for 40? I am taking a set to use at our condo as everyday.

I have 20 of my every day dinner dishes. My mom must have at least 50 of her every day stuff (basic white from Williams Sonoma).

I have 2 sets of everyday dishes in current rotation. Each one has 8 full (5 pc) place settings. I also have 2 sets of Oneida stainless, 8 place settings each. So I could serve a total of 16 people. Only once have I had that many people in my house for a meal and it was extremely tight, so won't do that again.
If you are registering dishes that are not open stock, then my recommendation is to buy 2-4 place settings extra to cover for breakage. If it is open stock, then you should be good with just getting the number of settings you prefer. Same goes for silverware. Open stock patterns give you more flexibility for replacing lost/broken pieces.

Service for 8…but multiple sets so if I was using my three holiday sets plus daily and other, I could do 40. Have silverware for 16 and then two daily sets. 😬 I love setting tables lol!

I only had a 4 place setting - offloaded it cos I didn’t actually like it
I now have plain white - which is easily added to
But as I had 4x kids, I ended up with an 8place setting. Nothing fancy - did I mention I had 4 kids?

I could serve about 70 people but my dinnerware would be with 4 different patterns and silverware would be with about 5 different sets.

I have enough Fiestaware place settings, in three different colours, for 12 ... I also bought 12 appetizer plates and 4 Gusto bowls I have way less silverware and when I did entertain large groups I would borrow some of my mum's ...

I have an 8 piece white setting, then a four piece black setting (dinner plates only) plus a couple of odd plates that people have left here over the years. I do not own any "good china".
If I have any more than about 16 people here (rare), I use plastic picnic plates for the kids.
Cutlery - who knows? Most of our forks and teaspoons mysteriously* disappeared over time, so recently DSO went to K-Mart and bought a ton of forks and teaspoons.
*I say 'mysteriously' disappeared, but it had to have been DD and DS taking them to work or into their bedroom, although both strenuously deny it.

When I had clunky, heavy dishes, I believe I had service for 12. Now, I have Corelle and have service for 16, which still takes up far less room. I have sets of 3 different plates all stacked that take up less room than just the dinner plates from the stoneware.
12 is my minimum. I wouldnt want to have less than that

I'd say 20 everyday, bringing it up to about 50 if you include the sets of fine china.

I have 12 place settings. It is Fiestaware, 3 sets of 4 colors. We had 4 kids when I bought it so that gave me 2 nights dinner before running the dishwasher.
Now kids are grown and all were here during a storm with their significant others and I got to thinking...maybe I need more. I think the only thing holding me back is deciding on a color.

We have enough plates for 8.
We did the math on how many people we would actually have over for a meal. If we hosted both of our families and our kids, we would have 9 or 10 people. I feel like once we go past 6 people, we would buy paper plates since we don't have a dishwasher.
I also only have 8 seasonal plates. It's a discontinued pattern so 8 is all I'll have unless I want to spend too much on replacement.com or eBay.

I have 6 servings. Although I only have 5 bowls (one broke) I have silverware for 4 (but there are 4 regular forks and 4 salad forks - so enough for 6 people if I need them) I have 6 glasses (plus 2-3 smaller glasses if needed)

Everyday plates, I'm down to 4 dinner plates after breaking 2. We have 6 luncheon plates that I use a lot also. I haven't replaced the broken ones because I have 12 china plates. My main china is very simple and I usually use that if we have company regardless of whether or not it is a special occasion. So I could serve 16 though I have no idea where as I don't have that much seating.
I have an additional 6 place settings of very good china that I use for Christmas or something like that. Also, I found my mother's wedding china packed in a box in her basement wrapped in newspaper from 1981. I guess we had both forgotten about it because it matches my home perfectly. I replaced the one lost dinner plate so that is a setting for 6 also.

How many people could you feed with your everyday dishes and cutlery? In my house 8 people can have a setting of plates (salad and dinner) a bowl and utensils. 3 can have a cup for coffee. 4 more can have utensils only. 12 people can have a glass for cold drinks like tea. I bought two sets of corelle so I would have a table setting for 8 but mugs have been broken due to getting dropped on knocked off a table. For deciding how much you need consider how many you plan to serve a meal to at one time and how much space you have for storage of what you don't routinely use. I don't have space for 40 settings of dishware.

I can serve up to 40 people and have all place settings match. Anything above that, I dig out extra sets of 8 as needed, but they will be a different set. They will coordinate, but not match. All told, I can seat 72 for a meal - but that has only happened once or twice lol

I probably have 8-12 porcelain servings (they were my mom's), but since my son was little and my nieces and nephew are always here, we use melamine. I also just bought the cheapo plastic ones from Target. The bowls are great for cereal and ice cream

We were registering at both a major/metro department store and a gift shop in my smaller hometown, so we registered for 6 place settings of dishes/silverware at the smaller store and 10 at the larger. We ended up at something like 12-14 sets of each, and it's been great. I do have a smaller set of inherited antique glassware but no other silverware. I'm not a big entertainer, but I don't think I'd want more of the everyday stuff except as replacements. The silverware we have is about what fits nicely in the little drawer divider when it's all clean. We have bought more of the dishes to replace damaged pieces, but we keep it to about the same number in the cupboard because again, that's what fits nicely.
My everyday stuff is Mikasa, and one thing we have added and I wish I had sooner is a matching 4 place settings of melamine. It was nice to get rid of all the mixed size weird kid dishes but still have something I didn't have to worry about crashing to the floor if the kid dropped it. One thing I might have skipped is the serving pieces. I don't hate them, but I reach for clear pyrex dishes that have flat lids first, because I can just pop a lid on and stack them in the fridge, instead of having to use plastic wrap or a domed lid that doesn't allow for stacking.

What you will need is highly dependent on your lifestyle. If you have a large family that you will host or like to have dinner parties, you’ll need more. You really need to consider how you’ll plan to entertain.
We have 22 plates in my everyday Churchill Blue Willow. We do not have the same number of accompanying pieces for it though. We also have a Charles Keath service for 12 in a cheerful bright yellow. And a Dansk service for 8 with just large pasta-type bowls and plates in a glazed clay type finish. Then a service for 8 in a rustic pattern called Garden Path by Folk Art. All those sets see a pretty regular rotation just for variety’s sake.
I also have five china patterns accessible (not counting the stored ones!) along with a slew of different glassware, crystal sets, stainless flatware, multiple sets of sterling, and lots of tablecloths, cloth napkins, placemats, napkin holders, and every other table setting item you could think of.
I’m aware I’m waaaayyyyy past the average on this. I love to cook, love to set a pretty table, and love to entertain. I’d have more if I had room to store it all.

Well, I f I were you I wouldn't care what others have, I would think about what I need. How big s your family? Do you have a lot of family members likely to get married and have kids? Do you even like to entertain?
I have dinnerware and placesettings for 30 and use them regularly now rhat our family has grown but as newlyweds the 8 place settings we had were sufficient

Just us four. 😂 We don't have a fancier set either - I keep it simple and obviously fairly minimal.

I have 12 white everyday dinner plates, maybe 8 salad plates, and 12 setting of my everyday silverware. I also have 8 place settings of my wedding china, 12 place setting of mix/match pink rose china, and another 8 settings of silverware. I guess that means I can serve 20 assuming none of my spoons and forks have disappeared.
I used to have 24 place settings of Christmas dishes. I donated that a few years ago, since I didn't like it any longer. I often host my family for Christmas and there are now 25 of us. I will shamelessly use paper products if I have everyone here for Christmas.
