My first thought wouldn't be shenanigans, it would be staffing problems and not enough workers to keep up with changing the shelf tags with all the rapidly changing prices. As far as him "placating" you, what were you looking for? He changed your prices and got you on your way as quick as possible. He should correct the mispriced items so other customers don't end up paying more than they thought they were going to pay based on the listed price. If that happened at my store we would get you in your way, and then recall the receipt to find the items that needed correction.

Target is the worst for this. I went last Sunday and when I got home I noticed that several items rang up higher (both regular priced and sale items) than what was listed on the shelf. Normally I would go back and have them correct it but we were absolutely slammed last week and I just didn't have time. It's super annoying though. (and been happening since long before the pandemic)

To answer some questions: These were not items in the wrong place. They were on the shelves with many more behind them. I even double checked the product names when I went back to check the prices. So it also wasn’t children or adults changing the tags. These are not sale prices. They were the regular prices on the little white tag in front of the products. I’m sure it’s because the price of the item has gone up and they have not changed the tag. But they have not changed the tag on 1/3 of the items I purchased. And yes – I’m sure that they are short-staffed. I do not blame the employees – I blame target as a major corporation who does almost $100 billion a year in revenue. I’m not even joking – I googled it. It’s $100 billion a year. The manager was very polite. But he did not stick around for the transaction. He just told the kid monitoring the self check out to do the price adjustments. So there is no way that he would have even known which items were ringing up for more than they were supposed to. I don’t normally monitor prices as I check out. But one item was a significant difference. And I was purchasing many of the items for school and was trying to stick to a strict budget. So I had it all added up in my head. Otherwise, I would’ve just scanned everything and been shocked by the total like I always am – thinking that I just have no self-control at target. Which is partly true – but it wasn’t tonight. Listen – I love target as much as anyone. But I can’t believe how many of you are making excuses for them. They make $100 billion a year in revenue yet do not pay their workers a living wage. So they cannot attract workers (and honestly they’re quite happy paying fewer employees). So they cannot change the prices and consumers end up paying more. Meanwhile – their CEO makes $20 million a year while I’m scraping by on $60,000. Yet I am expected to take the hit. And this is happening everywhere. Corporations are making record profits while paying their employees crap, so quality and customer service are going down— and somehow it’s our fault. I rarely shop for more than a handful of items at Target, but it's close to my gym, so sometimes I'll run in and grab a thing or two. Every couple times I have to double check certain things. To the point I now take photos of the shelf/item/price on certain things, especially food items. I've done it for years. But!! THEY GOT ME!! They sell hamburger in the vacuum packed plastic containers. One pound and two pounds. The two pounds is cheaper per pound. I grabbed two, and went to check out. Remember, in a hurry. I paid what the stickers said (I checked lol) I got home, and my gym rat, meal planning, macros tracking son was making his portioned meals. And he was PISSED because I'd told him I'd get him 4 pounds of burger and he prepared all his other stuff to go with four pounds. Then I explained to him, what it weighs on the sticker isn't cooked weight. He said. I know mom! But you'd think I'd get two pounds cooked?? I was like, yeah, of course!! So he heaped it all back on the scale and he was right!! 1.82 lbs. I looked at the packages again, and yep. Said 4 pounds between the two. I dug my nasty receipt out of the trash and went back to Target with my scale. Went to the meat dept, and low and behold, the 2 pound packages only had one pound in them!! They "gave me" 2 more one pound packs, and said they'd relabel the ones still there. No idea if they did. But I'm still mad about it lol So OP, I'm with you!! I definitely hold them accountable. When her change was supposed to include a few pennies, and the cashier didn't give them to her, my grandmother would always speak up. It's only .03, but it's my ..03! FWIW- I haven't stepped foot in Target again, and it's been about 3 months. On the scale of these stores, it really really matters.

I don't work for Target so I don't have any first hand knowledge of how their POS system works. I would assume it includes some kind of review process for price changes at the register, otherwise what would stop a cashier from marking down all the prices for their friends? Just because the manager didn't write down the items on a piece of paper in front of you doesn't mean there isn't any action being taken. I know any time I have had a price adjusted at Target they haven't taken any notes, but the shelf tags get changed, so there must be some kind of system in place. Other large regional/national chains like Publix, Michaels, and JoAnn have all fixed the pricing immediately when I've noticed errors. It seems strange to me that Target would have multiple items in one transaction and not take action to correct the problem as it is pointed out. All of those incorrect prices take money out of consumer pockets and into Target's profits - even if the errors are corrected within 24 hours, how many people are victimized by their corporate ineptitude? $10 may not be a lot to you, but it is to a lot of people. I don't know where you got the impression that "$10 isn't a lot" to me. I never said it wasn't a lot, I never said I was fine with stores overcharging people. I said you can't make the assumption that they did nothing because you don't know how their system works. It isn't the corporation not putting the corrected shelf tags on, it is an individual worker at store level who either made a mistake or didn't get all their work done.

I’ve only had a few instances at Target over the years and always during the black friday/holiday season. I did have an occurrence today at Kohl’s. I was buying a new pillow. The price of 49.99 was printed directly on the packaging under the upc (not on a sticker). It rang up as 69.99. When I told the cashier the price was incorrect she said the sale is buy one get one 1/2 off. I had to point out the printed price. $20 is not a small difference. She adjusted it right away but how many others got duped?!

My DH hit a Wendy’s drive thru the other day. His meal said $9 something on the board, which is already expensive enough. But his total charge was almost $12. He commented at the window and the kid said “oh yeah, we had to stop updating the board outside because prices are changing every day”. It’s crazy! But they should at least put a warning on the board that prices have changed, or just take the prices off entirely. An unexpected 20% up-charge could mean a person may not be able to pay for their food.

Listen – I love target as much as anyone. But I can’t believe how many of you are making excuses for them. They make $100 billion a year in revenue yet do not pay their workers a living wage. If these are your true feelings about Target, I don't understand why you say you love them. You clearly have issues with their business practices and might want to consider why you are supporting those practices by shopping there.

I ordered a sale item at BK the person asked if I wanted cheese on that I said sure thinking it would add maybe 20-30 cents but in fact I nullified the ‘sale’ making the item, well both items it was bogo, full price which they did not mention when asking. I just said forget it I’m not paying $5.99 for 2 pieces of cheese & left They said what do you want me to do with these, I said not my problem

I know different Targets have different prices for identical items- I noticed this 15+ years ago when I visited my cousins in a "nicer" part of Tallahassee and their prices were just a bit higher than the prices in my part of town. I just don't get the number of excuses made for a giant corporation essentially stealing from consumers. It is not ok. If they advertise a product at one price, when really it should cost a higher price, they need to eat the difference, and not hope customers don't catch onto to them.

I'm not making excuses for a corporation, I am stating a very simple fact. Shelf tags are put on by employees at store level. If you think there is a corporate conspiracy to steal from customers, maybe you should think about shopping somewhere else.

I always try to add up as I am ordering (we usually get the same thing each time, so pretty much know the price) so will pay attention.
My daughters (19-24 yrs. old) get annoyed when I am overcharged and I ask for it to be corrected. I always am nice about it and never have any problems. But of course it's my money, not theirs. I am excited to see how they react when they are overcharged when it's their own money.

Okay, in a related retail note how about this one? I signed up for the Michael’s reward program. I go there fairly often because the JoAnn’s stores really jack up the regular prices on stuff and are typically really disorganized and grungy, and Hobby Lobby is run by religious zealot criminals. Anyway, I must get between 10-15 emails from them PER WEEK, and just about every email contains a link to a 40% off coupon now that they don’t typically do printed newspaper ads anymore. Lately I’m finding that whenever there is something I want to go there to buy (being lured in with the continuous stream of 40% off coupons in my emails), when I get to the store and look on their app the only coupon available is for 20% off. Huh? So I thought maybe it was because I wasn’t logged in to my rewards account, but nope, that didn’t bring up the better coupon either. When I delete my emails on one device, I noticed it clears them off of my phone too. So I started NOT deleting those emails so I could pull one of those coupons up on my phone when I shopped. Except the wifi in their stores is so bad that I can’t ever access my emails when I’m inside the store. No! 🙌 COUPON! 🙌 FOR! 🙌 YOU! 🙌 😤 In fact, the last time I shopped at Michael’s was the week of May 8th, so just about two weeks ago. I counted, and in the last seven days alone I have received ten emails from them and 7/10 had a 40% coupon showing. I went there yesterday to get one thing. It was not on sale (surprise!) and when I looked at the app (logged in) the coupon was for 20% off. Went to my email (which of course wouldn’t load) so I clicked on the link to “view in browser” and when I did that (standing by the door to get a better cell signal), the 40% coupon was grayed out saying, “This coupon has already been redeemed.” How is that even possible when it was the tenth email I received in a week and I hadn’t even been in the store in two weeks? The store manager was the cashier ringing me up and of course when I mentioned it he gave it to me, but he noted, “The coupons have all been for 20% off lately.” Um, NO, I regularly see them in my emails every.single.week. So what the hell is up with that scammy bait and switch scheme? When I received yet another email from them after I got home asking me to do a survey about my experience in the store, you better believe I called out that BS for what it is, which is a scammy bait and switch to get me in the store and then not give me the coupon they advertised, repeatedly, in alllll the emails they send me! From now on, I’m going to start bringing those coupons up on my phone at home when I see them, do a screen shot of the coupon and saving it in my photos to use when I’m in the store. I don’t need wifi to access my photos, and then it should always work.

It cracks me up a bit that the one who was most annoyed and embarrassed when DH or I would bring up a price discrepancy is the one who fine tooth combs her own charges now.

I find that when something rings up wrong it's usually in the store's favor not mine. It's rare when something rings up under the tagged amount. I have been pleasantly surprised many times when I was charged less than the ticketed price. Clearance items are usually adjusted in the system before they get their price tags changed, so the item rings up less than the sticker. I can’t count how many times I’ve purchased an item that is much less than I expected, taken it to my car, then returned to buy more since it was such a good deal.

Target is the worst for this. I went last Sunday and when I got home I noticed that several items rang up higher (both regular priced and sale items) than what was listed on the shelf. Normally I would go back and have them correct it but we were absolutely slammed last week and I just didn't have time. It's super annoying though. (and been happening since long before the pandemic) I rarely shop at Target anymore unless it’s a really great deal or I just can’t find it anywhere else (Fever Tree Elderflower Tonic Water—so hard to find around here!). However, back when I shopped there more often, I knew better than to trust the registers on Sunday when the new ad started. So many things were wrong, and I would have to get overrides. So annoying.

I've moved, and the closest Target is an hour away, so geography made me alter my shopping habits.

crazy4scraps next time you get a %40 coupon take screen shot before you go to the store. I forget what store I was having issues with a similar problem but they did accept the screen shot with the bar code ( maybe Joann’s ) I also take a picture of my kohls coupon so I don’t have to drag that around in my purse

It’s so annoying! At least with Kohl’s, I have the app and theirs does pretty well with keeping track of my Kohl’s Cash, reward dollars and discounts all right in my phone. I also like that theirs has a barcode scanner so if I see something in the store and I’m not sure how much it is, I can scan it with my phone to see the price.

A friend recently checked her receipt for her groceries as the total was much higher than expected and discovered that the cashier had rung several items through twice and - wait for it- charged her around £80 for 358 plastic carrier bags!!
It makes you wonder how much other shoppers get overcharged on a regular basis.

I had a label on a clothing item say 12.99 and it rang up for 14.99 I called the cashier over to have her fix it and suggested she look that up in her system and fix it there too. She said it wasn't her responsibility, so I reminded her it is illegal to show a lower price and charge a higher one.
