I have been paying towards a trip to Europe (England, France, Spain) for the past 2 years. I've never been and I was really excited to knock something off my bucket list. Twice before I came close to going but something came up.
Well, I'm scheduled to leave next Friday and guess what happened?
I have covid. Unbelievable. So now, once again I have to cancel my trip to Europe. I am so bummed.
Also, this is the last week of school so I won't get to see my 8th grade students again and I'm sad about that. I can't even send them a message because the school has already collected their Chromebooks. And my room is a mess- it usually takes me a week to pack with my students' help. I'm not allowed back in the building until next week, when the kids will already be gone. I was going to have my nephew help me pack the last day, too, and now I don't think that is going to work, either. I'll be past my isolation time but I still don't feel right being in a car with him.
This whole thing is a mess. So now I have to call the touring company today and I really am not looking forward to that.
I hope I get to Europe someday. I always wanted to travel and I haven't gotten to do much as an adult (we traveled a lot when I was a kid). It is tough since I don't have a partner- I don't feel comfortable going to other countries by myself.
I feel stupid being sad about this because so far I only have the symptoms of a cold and obviously I am very lucky about that.

I’m so sorry! What a huge disappointment. I hope you’re feeling better soon, that you don’t end up being out money and that you’ll be able to reschedule.

Oh, I’m so sorry! That’s a huge disappointment. I hope they can move you to another tour later in the summer, if that’s something you’d be interested in.

Why do you have to cancel? Could you wait and see if you feel better?

Oh no! Maybe ask if they let you reschedule or be out on a wait list? You won’t be the only one this summer.

Oh how disappointing. If you test negative before next Friday wouldn't it be still possible for you to go? I would hold on until a day or so before you are due to go before you cancel it altogether.

Do you mean tomorrow or next week? If it's a week from now and you are vaccinated, don't you just have to wait 5 days? And you could still go? I know the covid guidelines change a lot, so I may be wrong.

I think you could probably go next Friday. Especially if you have mild symptoms right now.

I am so so sorry! That just sucks. I have a friend that had that happen to twice also. She had a big bucket list trip to Scotland for a milestone birthday. She had to cancel the first scheduled one because of emergency health issues for her mother. Rescheduled everything for the next year and then the pandemic hit and she had to cancel everything again. Luckily she did not lose a ton of money.
It sucks so much. I hope that you get on your dream trip soon. As a single person, I understand it is not always so easy or appealing to travel alone but I am going to highly suggest that you keep trying to find ways to get to some places you want to see, whether alone, with family/friends, or on some type of guided tour.
I hope you feel better and again I am so sorry that your plans have been derailed.

Won't she need a negative test to get back into the US? Are any European countries still requiring tests? DH's company has offices in other countries and it's been an issue because people seem to test positive for a long time after infection - several weeks in some cases. DH has Covid right now (we're just passing it around the family) and he's already put off a work trip to Bolivia he was supposed to take in a couple of weeks because he tested positive for so long the last time he had it, even with no symptoms. artbabe I'm so sorry. I hope there is some way for you to go.

Won't she need a negative test to get back into the US? Yes, but that shouldn't be a problem if she has proof of when she first tested positive.

I’m sorry 😞. We had just started talking about going to Europe when the pandemic hit. Hoping to go someday, but right now I’d hate to get there, only to come down with Covid while there.

I am so sorry - do you want to wait a few days and see if you test negative? You are SUPER brave doing this on your own - yay for you! I hope that you don't have any bad symptoms and are better soon.

Was it a rapid home test? There's a brand of rapid tests that always say I am positive, but a PCR test and other brands have negative results.

Are any European countries still requiring tests? Most European countries haven't required a test for vaccinated people for some time. I know we flew from Dubai to Germany last November without needing to test.

That really, really sucks I’m so sorry! I hope your symptoms stay mild and that you are able to reschedule soon. Do you think you could reschedule for later this summer or was there a particular reason you chose this time of year?

Does the touring company that you are booked through have specific Covid protocols? Those might be stricter than Countries and such. I hope you can look into it and still go if you feel up to it.

I hope there is some way for you to go. My kids (23 & 20) are in Spain right now for the week and they didn't need a Covid test to travel nor will they need to test before returning to the US. There was an online health form to fill out and they needed to have their vaccination cards with them.

Was it a rapid home test? There's a brand of rapid tests that always say I am positive, but a PCR test and other brands have negative results. Yet PCRs can be wrong too. A recent article had information about trusting the symptoms too. Reading it was depressing, since it would be nice to rely on something during this big mess. Here’s the article, from Rutgers University, and a couple excerpts: www.rutgers.edu/news/trust-clinical-covid-19-signs-over-negative-rt-pcr-test“What we found was quite surprising.” ”Treatment for COVID-19 should be based on clinical judgment and not just testing, according to a Rutgers study that found testing alone is missing some people with the virus, especially those at high risk who need therapeutic treatments.” “RT-PCR tests are not perfect, Alland said. “After the first week of infection, there is a decline in virus shedding in the respiratory tract, where tests can become falsely negative,” he said. “Thus, a COVID diagnosis might be missed if a patient presents with symptoms further along in the infection, which can lead to delayed, missed or unnecessary treatment for an inaccurate alternative diagnosis.” However, Alland notes that some of their study participants also appeared to have false negative RT-PCR test results soon after symptoms developed, suggesting that even within the first week, RT-PCR testing can miss COVID-19 cases.”
